Whether made by nature or man, many of the world’s most amazing sites are next to the water’s edge. Not surprisingly so, as the water has played such an important role in both history, the evolution of man and in recharging the spirit. Some of the most unique of these places are still off the radar to most tourists, but our readers are lucky to be able to discover a few of these best kept secrets thanks to these insider tips from our local experts across the globe.

The  Arethusa Pool on Mou Waho Island, Lake Wanaka

Our experts at Touch of Spice fill us in on one of Lake Wanaka’s best kept secrets, accessible only via boat lays an island, known as Mou Waho or commonly referred to as the lake on the lake.

“The largest of Lake Wanaka’s islands, Mou Waho is a protected home to many native bird and plant life, but what makes it so popular is what’s hidden at the summit,” explains Kelcey Radford of Touch of Spice. The peak sits at just over 200m above lake level and offers stunning views of Lake Wanaka, mountain ranges – and its very own lake.

“A natural feed lake, The Arethusa Pool sits in a rock cradle some 150m above the main lake. Come summer the water here reaches slightly higher temperatures than Lake Wanaka, providing an opportunity to swim in a truly unique location.”

Touch of Spice has a wonderful range of luxury villas in the Wanaka area, like the Ridge Retreat, pictured above right. From here you can journey out to Mou Waho Island by private charter to visit Wanaka’s famous “island on a lake on an island on a lake on an island on a lake” Yes, three times over!). Katha and other sites along the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar

One of the most beautiful waterways in Southeast Asia is undoubtedly Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River. Snaking its way down the country from north to south, it passes by gilded temples, lovely villages and breathtaking landscape. The best way to experience all of this is certainly by boat and our experts at Amara River Cruise have a fleet of two beautiful handcrafted teak boats on which you can sail the river during their private cruises. Zenaida des Aubris of Amara takes us on a virtual journey past some of her favorite riverside sites:

“The itinerary of the Amara River Cruise on the Irrawaddy from Mandalay to Bhamo in the north (or vice versa) is a true opportunity to get to know the heart of Myanmar. Because this route is off the beaten path, the many stops along the way of the six-day cruise offer a glimpse into everyday life. One of the highlights is a visit to the small city of Katha, home to the author George Orwell for several years and where he wrote his novel “Burmese Days”. His house can still be visited, it has not been refurbished and is openly accessible. Another highlight is the beautiful scenery where the shores of the Irrawaddy form two gorges, with high cliffs holding the morning mist and opening up to picturesque vistas.

“The coastal landscape along the Irrawaddy offers a constantly changing panorama. White and gold-tipped pagodas are found next to practically every settlement. Every river-mile brings new impressions and new images. Enjoy being pampered by the attentive staff of the Amara while seeing this tropic landscape glide by!”

Northern Venetian Lagoon, Italy

With its tight streets, palazzi, churches and masses of tourists, Venice is as urban a city as they come. But the lagoon in which the famous island floats is one of the best kept secrets of the region.

“The Venetian lagoon is a veritable eco-paradise in the Mediterranean; with an average depth of two feet, it is home to marshy land masses that spawn a diverse fauna, from oysters, shrimp, and cuttlefish, to anchovy, eels, mullet, and sea bass,” reveals enthusiastically Allison Zurfluh of Isola Santa Cristina. “Vast species of birds make their home among the fishing valleys that are an organic part of Venetian life. Dotting the lagoon rise grassy barene, island marshlands that cannot be accessed by public transportation.”

Set in the very heart of this unique ecosystem, Isola Santa Cristina partners with Mauro Stoppa to provide exclusive forays into the northern wilds, where writers such as Ernest Hemingway found inspiration for lengthy works. Locally-sourced Venetian delicacies are prepared aboard an antique flat-bottomed fishing boat, or bragozzo, as it cruises expertly through narrow, otherwise inaccessible, canals. An experience of a lifetime, Venice will never seem the same again.

After a unique, adventurous and delicious day out on the lagoon, retreat to your private island getaway on Isola Santa Cristina. Hidden in the lagoon, a 30-minute boat ride from Venice, the island features one large, historic house which has been recently renovated to incorporate the best modern luxuries. The refined house is set within beautiful gardens which roll over into a maze of more wild paths, orchards and vineyards.

As pink and violet blossoms begin popping up in many countries of Europe and North America, yellow, orange and red leaves will soon be spreading over the forests and fields down in New Zealand. Autumn is one of the loveliest times of the year to visit the country, and not just for the spectacular show of colors. There are generally fewer other tourists in the fall which means a greater array of accommodation deals and much better chances of getting a seat at the country’s most coveted restaurants. Our local luxury villa experts at MajorDomo and Touch of Spice give us these fantastic insider tips on how and where to make the most of the autumn in New Zealand.

This historic gold mining town on the South Island, located in the Otago region a short 20-minute drive from Queenstown, is in its prime in autumn. Arrowtown is truly one of the best places to experience the season, described here by Bindy Edgen of MajorDomo:

Arrowtown’s many boutique shops and eateries along the main street, as well as the meandering walking trails, are a “must do” when travelling to Queenstown or Wanaka.”

The season’s glory is celebrated every April during the town’s now famous Arrowtown Autumn Festival, now in its 32nd year. From April 20 to 25 the town will be abuzz with a wide range of activities for all ages including live concerts, markets, parades, visits to the old mine and even gold panning championships. A highpoint is always on the Saturday when the Festival’s Market Day & Street Parade takes place.

“Whether you are looking for a Pie & Pint day, Vintage Car Displays, Gold Panning, Street Theatre or the renowned Market Day, which this year will have over 100 stalls, the festival has events for everyone!” details Kelcey Radford of Touch of Spice. “All set within the breath-taking autumn colours of Arrowtown.”

Six Shillings – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

The stunning sands and waters of the Bahamas beckon those looking to tie the knot on the beach. One of the most memorable islands is the laidback, yet exclusive Harbour Island. Our local expert, Pamela H. Murdock, tells us more about organizing your special day on this unique island:

“As small as Harbour Island is, it’s big for destination weddings. And it’s something the island knows how to do perfectly. Whether one gets married in a church or on the beach, this idyllic isle is completely romantic and fun. No matter where the location of the actual ceremony is, brides should definitely plan at least one event on the pale pink sand beach framed by clear turquoise water. What could be a more beautiful, fairy-tale setting?

“As wedding guests are usually on island for at least three days, there’s lots to do to keep everyone busy – from charming shops and a variety of restaurants to in-house massage and personal training to boat charters for diving, snorkeling, fishing (deep sea and bone) and picnics on a deserted island. All of which we can organize for clients who rent villas through us.

“Another fun feature on the island are the golf carts which are how one gets around. One bride even planned a island-wide treasure hunt and guests had great fun zipping around clutching the list of things they must find. Golf carts are also ideal as one can’t get into too much trouble – especially after a couple of glasses of champagne!”

For a small wedding of under 20 people, Pamela recommends the Six Shillings Villa. The secluded estate has two lovely beach houses located on two acres of well-landscaped oceanfront property. The main house features a Great Room with cathedral ceilings, a comfortable living area, dining alcove and a fully equipped kitchen. There are three spacious, air-conditioned bedrooms that open onto a wrap around deck with both shaded and sunny sitting areas as well as a covered dining area overlooking the beach.

Twenty-five feet from the main house is a quaint cottage, tucked in the lush garden, which can accommodated an additional two guests. It’s immersed in palms and bougainvilleas and the other flowering trees scattered throughout the garden. The beach is a mere few steps away.

To marry in The Bahamas, couples must present valid passports and birth certificates. Divorce decrees are also required if applicable. Pamela will take care of the rest! Reach out to her here to start planning a beautiful Bahamian beach wedding.

A few months ago our award-winning New Zealand experts at MajorDomo tipped us off about a phenomenal new retreat they would be launching towards the end of the year. We were eagerly anticipating its arrival and now we’re thrilled to introduce the Mahu Whenua Ridgeline Homestead & Eco Sanctuary, an expansive and incredibly beautiful eco luxury homestead with a mission. Preview this one of a kind retreat with us below.majordomo_mahuwhenua_landscape47hero4-lake-wanaka-2

Located near Wanaka in the spectacular Southern Lakes area of the South Island, Mahu Whenua extends over 550 square km (200 square miles) over stunning high country owned by globally-recognised record producer Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange.

Since acquiring the property, Lange’s vision has been to regenerate the land especially through sustainable farming practices and native bird breeding programme. Incited by this program’s success, he has officially protected more than 90% of the land, making it the largest conservation undertaking on private land in the country’s history. In fact, Mahu Whenua aptly translates to “Healing the Land”.

majordomo_mahuwhenua_homesteadexterior-sm

“While small areas of the land are currently open to walkers, runners or bikers on high ridge trails, there are tens of thousands of hectares that are 100% private to guests, making this a truly exclusive and unique experience,” explains Lisa Hayden, co-founder and co-director of MajorDomo. “It’s hugely exciting news for the luxury tourism industry especially as the demand for this type of experience is very high for our client base.”

The homestead is set amidst glacial valleys, mountains, alpine lakes, forest and meandering rivers, yet is only a fifteen-minute drive out of Wanaka township. It offers rustic yet stylish accommodation for up to 12 guests; eight in the main Ridgeline Homestead and four in two separate guest cottages.

mahu-whenua-hiking

In keeping with Lange’s principles, MajorDomo has designed specific experiences to coincide with his long term vision for like-minded guests who would appreciate his environmental initiatives.

“Guests could revel in this conservation hideaway for the duration of their stay and never see another soul on the property, apart from those who are there to ensure they get the most out of their experience,” adds Fiona Stevens, MajorDomo’s other brainchild.

All stays are bespoke and fully hosted with guided experiences including horse trekking, overnight stays at shepherds’ cottages around the station, heli-skiing, mountain biking, 4wd adventures, farm tours, picnics, backcountry touring and yoga. Guests are also encouraged to observe or engage in conservation practices such as replanting areas with native trees, and learn about a native bird and plant regeneration programme.

Guests can venture slightly further afield to nearby Milford Sound where they could catch crayfish for their evening meal, prepared by the homestead’s private chef and served with the best local New Zealand wines.

mahu-whenua-bath-sml

Geared towards families or groups of friends seeking an adventurous “return to the land” retreat or travelers wanting a luxury retreat in ultra exclusivity, it’s also ideal for small corporate or incentive trips. Regardless of what draws visitors here, MajorDomo strongly feels that each guest will take some ‘ownership’ of the environmental work that’s underway at Mahu Whenua, making it an exceptional, mind-shifting experience going far beyond an average holiday.
