Renting a whole village, in the finest Tuscan tradition, must be one of the greatest luxuries. And that luxury can be yours to indulge in, at the Borgo Finocchieto, a beautifully and elegantly restored eight-hundred-year-old village, or “borgo”. Borgo Finocchieto is unique among properties in Tuscany, central Italy, with stunning views of surrounding hills, valleys and towns. Five historic villas, including the elegant manor house, sit atop six acres of Tuscan hilltop grounds and can accommodate up to 44 guests in 22 elegant suites. The Borgo is four kilometres west of the small town of Buonconvento (located on the Via Francigena, the medieval pilgrimage route that connected Rome to the rest of Europe) and just a few more kilometres north of the much revered wine capital of Montalcino. Siena is just thirty minutes away, Florence an hour’s drive, and Rome reachable in two and a half hours. The owner of the Borgo, John Phillips – an American of Italian ancestry and former U.S. Ambassador to Italy from 2013 to 2017 – purchased the property in 2001 and spent eight years planning and overseeing the Borgo’s brilliant renovation.

The Borgo’s five villas are arranged around its central piazza, allowing it to function as its own community. Gathering spaces include a formal dining room and outdoor dining terrace, a living room with grand piano and study, a media room, library, bar, conference facility and a ballroom accommodating up to 70 people, a cantina and wine-tasting room, a professional teaching kitchen, an interior arcaded courtyard, a piazza, and extensive lawn and garden spaces with various shaded benches and a gazebo. Recreational facilities include a 60-foot oval swimming pool, a fully equipped gym with over twenty Cybex machines, ellipticals, and a treadmill; a spa with its Jacuzzi tub, cold splash, steam room and dry sauna;  and tennis, basketball and bocce courts. Individual suites are ample, luxurious, and private, while the public spaces are intended to encourage coming together in a variety of graceful settings. The grounds provide expansive views in all directions and are adorned with a variety of aromatic and indigenous plants and trees.

Dining at the Borgo is a high point of any stay. Typically, Borgo guests choose to enjoy relaxed lunches on site, served in buffet style and alfresco dinners on the outside terrace or inside the “saloni”. All meals are prepared by the Borgo’s own private chef who has a deep foundation in traditional Tuscan cuisine that he combines with creative and modern variations. And the wine cellar is stocked with the best that Tuscany can offer: Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino, Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, as well as hand-crafted Sangiovese vintages, Super Tuscans, and other fine wines from local producers.

Given the Borgo Finocchieto’s enviable location, you are immersed in and immediately surrounded by its secluded beauty, and Tuscany’s rich cultural heritage that awaits you just beyond the Borgo’s front gate. Among the many activities to enjoy are hikes and bike rides through the diverse natural landscape, and day trips to nearby hill towns such as Montalcino and Pienza, as well as to the province of Siena, and Florence, the capital of the Tuscany region. The Borgo will help you arrange your choice of excursions based on your interests and desires, whether you like to eat, drink and shop, or explore the area’s myriad historical, artistic and natural treasures.

Borgo Finocchieto, available on an exclusive basis only, specializes in creating unforgettable, custom-made experiences for gatherings of all kinds. Guests come together in the village to unwind, bond, and exchange ideas, to celebrate anniversaries, reunions and weddings, or attend retreats. Every single detail has been thought of, with impeccable service that puts all at ease. Whether you are planning a family gathering or corporate retreat, the Borgo’s staff of 19 professionals – including general manager and concierge – provide support with every step of the way for those who demand the very best of what Tuscany has to offer and will accept no substitute.
