Residence on the Rocks
UltraVilla expert for Seychelles.
Completed in 2008, the Residence on the Rocks is located on a high ridge on the estate of the Banyan Tree Resort in the very south of Mahe, the main island of the Seychelles. This part of Mahe still has some virgin areas of indigenous forest and the Residence is surrounded by it and a range of granite rock formations, offering absolute and total privacy. From the front, it looks down on the Intendance Beach, voted one of the best beaches in the world, and the rear overlooks Taka Maka Beach.
The Seychelles is known as an expensive upmarket destination and the North of Mahe has seen a boom in mass tourism development. However, the Residence and its setting with not a single electric light from any neighboring dwelling to be seen at night are protected and a welcome haven from this development.
The luxurious four-bedroom complex is designed in a colonial, Creole style, reflecting the elegance of a bygone era with lovely antiques and art work personally collected by the villa’s owners. It follows an ecological approach with a rainwater collection tank, solar panels for hot water heating and other energy-saving electrical devices. There is a large lounge, a sitting area and dining room which is next to a fully equipped kitchen and storage room.
There are two bedrooms in the main building, the master bedroom is located above the lounge and there is an alcove with an office just above it. The second, large bedroom has two king-size beds is connected to the master bedroom via a passageway (ideal to keep an eye on smaller children). Two bedrooms are located in two separate guest houses, making the villa a perfect destination for multi-generational families or groups of friends getting together for a special occasion or small wedding.
There are several large covered verandas where guests can gather. One of the guest cottages has a separate access path which leads through the gardens and allows a party or crew of a private charter to come and go without having to interact with the guests in the main house.
The tropical climate of the Seychelles can mean rain showers at regular intervals interspersed with lots of sunshine. The large verandas allow to retreat to the various seating areas under cover next to the pool when a spell of rain showers blows in from the ocean. The gorgeous infinity pool is a favorite and the nearby plunge pool with some water jet action is generally enjoyed by the children. The Banyan Tree resort hosts one of their famous spas and massage experts are available at the spa or are willing to come to the Residence when booked in advance.
The Residence has catered to royalty from the Middle East and North Africa, Russian oligarchs, a former prime minister, a Miss Universe, a former Manchester United goalkeeper, TV personalities and screenwriters. All have been extremely pleased with the exceptional level of privacy and exclusivity.
The Residence can be reached by its own motorable access road from the hotel service area, or by a golf cart path which leads straight down to Intendance Beach and reception, a short seven minutes’ walk down the hill. The Sri Lankan caretaker couple have an apartment below one of the guest houses and as such are available 24 hours a day. Guests of the Residence can make use of all the resort’s facilities, including a range of restaurants including a Thai and a Creole restaurant. In addition, the caretakers are keen to take guests on shopping excursions to local markets for some fresh fruit, vegetables and a range of seafood items and can also assist with casual meals at the Residence.
Guests can rent a car to visit the wide range of beaches, local creole restaurants and other facilities in the South of Mahe or sailing, fishing or boating excursions to outer islands of the Seychelles can be arranged. Superb snorkeling and diving can be enjoyed on many of the beaches and occasionally killer whales and dolphins can be seen from The Residence’s pool deck.
The owners of Residence on the Rocks live in Kenya and we welcome personal contact with any of our guests and are very happy to answer specific questions prior to any booking request being finalized.
