Amidst growing rumors, it was finally revealed that former President Barack Obama was indeed spending a few days of well-deserved vacation in mid-May at our experts the Borgo Finocchieto. In 2001 the crumbling medieval hamlet was purchased by John Phillips, former U.S. Ambassador who oversaw its extensive eight-year restoration. Today the Borgo is one of the finest and most unique luxury rentals in Tuscany, a very fitting place for a Presidential retreat.

As the Obamas’ convoy approached the villa on May 19th, they received a warm welcome from some of the residents of Buonconvento, the village located nearby the Borgo. Obama also surprised the villagers on May 23rd during a well guarded stroll through the town. He stopped to greet some of the exuberant locals before touring the church of Santi Pietro e Paolo, home to some stained glass depicting great figures of the 20th century including fellow Americans John Kennedy and Martin Luther King (see more in this La Repubblica video).

Otherwise his time at the Borgo itself remained top secret. However, we assume that over the course of his five days at the beautiful villa that he, Michelle and a few friends relaxed thanks to its luxurious amenities including a 60-foot pool, basketball, tennis and bocce courts and modern, fully-equipped gym with sauna, steam room and cold splash.

We do know that the ex-President loves Tuscan food and he was surely in a state of culinary bliss during meals prepared by the Borgo’s talented chef Daniele Ciofi. The young 40-year-old chef has been at Borgo since 2015, designing a seasonal menu of traditional Tuscan dishes with a contemporary twist and using predominantly regionally sourced ingredients. These dishes are accompanied by the best wines of Tuscany like Brunello from Montalcino and Vino Nobile from Montpulciano.

You can learn more behind the story of the eight-hundred year old borgo in this article or in this in-depth feature on its incredible renovations. The Borgo can only be rented on exclusive buy out. It can accommodate up to 44 guests in 22 beautifully appointed suites. It’s a sublime setting for a memorable group holiday, wedding, family reunion, corporate retreat or other special event. It’s an excellent base for exploring the region on day-trips to nearby Montalcino, Pienza, Siena and Florence or on walks and bike rides around the surrounding hills and forests.

It’s rare to come across such an exceptional architectural treasure as the Borgo Finocchieto, a meticulously restored medieval hamlet nestled in the hills of Tuscany. In our latest edition of How We Started, the Borgo’s Sales & Marketing Consultant Pascale Quériot tells us the story of how its current owner, former Ambassador John Phillips, saved the buildings from near ruins and returned them to their previous glory.

John Phillips, owner of the Borgo Finocchieto. Photo Credit: David Yoder

“The Borgo Finocchieto (its name derived from the Italian finocchieto or a field of fennel, the yellow-flowered herb common to Tuscany), is unique among Tuscan properties: a beautifully and elegantly restored eight-hundred year old village (or borgo), with stunning views of surrounding hills, valleys and towns. The Borgo is four kilometers to the west of the small town of Buonconvento, and just a few more kilometers north of the much revered wine capital of Montalcino. Siena is just thirty minutes away, Florence an hour’s drive, and Rome reachable in two and a half hours.

Gardens-Views-0004

“The owner of the Borgo, John Phillips – an American of Italian ancestry and former U.S. Ambassador to Italy from 2013 to early 2017 – purchased the property in 2001 and spent eight years planning and overseeing the Borgo’s extensive renovation. The story of this former Tuscan village is at least eight centuries in the making – a history of how Borgo Finocchieto was transformed from its origins as a farming village owned by wealthy Tuscan families and populated by sharecroppers, to a country retreat for a noble family, to a site once again housing sharecroppers, to its more recent state of disuse and abandonment, and finally, to its current, brilliant restoration.

“Phillips approached the reconstruction of the Borgo with passion, teaming with a local architect and a crew of builders who had spent lifetimes working with traditional materials and old methods. Wherever possible, structures, walls, archways, windows and doorways were left untouched. The state of disrepair demanded that much be rebuilt, but meticulous care was taken to focus on preserving the surviving structures and employing traditional methods. In some cases, decorative elements such as door and window treatments, stenciling and original paint colors were faithfully reproduced, while wooden beams, arches and ceilings were restored to their original splendor.

“After many years of planning and reconstruction, the Borgo’s Manor House finally returned to what was likely its original function, the country retreat of a noble Tuscan family. The other houses in the village, including at one point a chapel and the housing for the peasants and livestock, have new purpose after decades of disuse. Details like the communal outdoor brick oven and the time-worn steps leading to the main floor of the Manor serve as reminders that despite modern comforts, the Borgo’s history is long and rich.”

The area also has some top restaurants that offer the best of culinary experiences.

Sitting atop the Tuscan hills, with a commanding view of the surrounding valleys and forests, the villa complex consists of five houses divided up into various common areas and 22 suites, the perfect venue for intimate special events.

The buildings previously made up a farming village passed between wealthy Tuscan families for centuries and was inhabited by sharecroppers until the 1980s. From the marvelous site we see today, it’s hard to believe that when its current owners came across it in 2000, all they found was the skeleton of a once-thriving rural community. The abandoned houses and sheds were covered in ivy and weeds while masonry had been pulled apart and some structures had completely collapsed.

Borgo restaurant

The Borgo’s newest patron, an American of Italian ancestry, approached the reconstruction of the Borgo with passion, teaming with a local architect and a crew of builders who had spent lifetimes working with traditional materials and old methods. He tells us a little more about this process below:

“Wherever possible, structures were left untouched – walls, archways, windows and doorways were allowed only where there once had been. The state of disrepair demanded that much be rebuilt, but meticulous care was taken to focus on preserving the surviving structures and employing traditional methods. In some cases, such as the manor house, decorative elements such as door and window treatments, stenciling and original paint colors were faithfully reproduced, while wooden beams, arches and ceilings were restored to their original splendor.”

“After ten years of planning and reconstruction, the Manor House has finally returned to what was, perhaps, its original function, the country retreat of a noble Tuscan family. The other houses, of more modest origin, including at one point a chapel and the housing for the peasants and livestock, have new purpose after decades of disuse. Details like the communal outdoor brick oven and the time-worn steps leading to the main floor of the Manor serve as reminders that despite modern comforts, the Borgo’s history is long and rich.”

Borgo After

The interior also received as much attention as the structural restaurant as described here by the Borgo’s interior designer Karen Hartman:

“The Borgo Finocchieto is decorated in a traditional country Italian theme. The main villa is slightly more formal than the independent houses but still reflects what might have been found in a city family’s country retreat, as suits the great house’s history. All of the furnishings and accessories were found in Italy, although most hail from Tuscany, in and around Siena and Florence. My first choice was to use antique or old pieces, which I often found at markets and fairs. This meant many trips to Arezzo’s world famous market held the first weekend of every month and to Lucca’s market on the third.

“Over the years I have developed a network of dealers, typically family run businesses, specializing in the restoration of period pieces. These enterprises generally include large storage facilities, called magazzini. Here I was encouraged to pick and choose from pieces in their “found” condition and then have them restored. Many of these ateliers also have state-of-the-art fabricating equipment so that, when necessary, I was able commission new pieces. Very often these dealers have specialties such as woodworking, iron mongering, stone cutting, or upholstering, which were handed down through the generations, and the entire family will be involved in the business in some way or another.

“This includes the Calattini family of nearby Poggibonsi, who restore and sell lovely examples of Italian country furniture, as well as operate a thriving business in reproductions. Among the many pieces they supplied for Borgo Finocchieto are the beautifully painted headboards found in most of the bedrooms.”
