Sylvia Delvaille Jones of Villas and Apartments Abroad tells us why this is such an idyllic destination at this time of year:

“Witness the first signs of springtime showcasing new life… fresh branches and pale green leaves, baby birds, butterflies and other creatures of nature making their presence known by their chirping, pecking and hopping sounds. Delicate blooms like posies designed just for you sprout from the ground; branches laden with eager buds can’t wait to burst. The rushing of streams, all calling out that new life is here at the gate of summer when beauty exploded into a galaxy of colors and life.

It features a hand-chiseled triple height barn and numerous old fireplaces, yet has been modernized to have all the amenities and comforts of a 21st century home. There are several dining areas, an antique barroom, a large comfortable TV room with 70” flatscreen, a sitting room with floor to ceiling bookshelves. Two of the additional bedrooms have king beds, three rooms have queen beds, and the last bedroom has a twin.

“Within the estate of 29 acres there is a beautiful swimming pool carved out of the natural rocks and access to the woods via a wooden bridge over the stream. There are various outdoor areas for entertaining and relaxing. Plus I would be remiss not to mention the chef’s kitchen where an excellent chef can be hired to prepare fabulous summer meals using vegetables, fruits and herbs straight from the garden. The area also has some top restaurants that offer the best of culinary experiences.

“The privacy makes this the perfect place for those quiet families, entertainers and others in the know wanting to get away from NYC or any of the tri-states for peaceful and indulging break in total relaxation mind, body and soul.”

Isola Santa Cristina, Venetian Lagoon

Venice is the City of Love, and countless are those who travel there to celebrate their nuptials in style. Wedding destinations in Venice typically focus on luxury hotels on the Grand Canal – a place to see and be seen. But for those looking for privacy – for the kind of exclusive luxury that only space and a natural setting away from the tourist crowds can provide – a private island not twenty minutes from the city is the perfect choice.

Isola Santa Cristina is a 75-acre property with views over the famed Burano and Torcello Islands available through Siglinde Fischer / Charming Places. Set among organic fish farms, orchards, and a private lake, a nine-room villa brings contemporary comfort to an authentically Venetian environment.

“Walk down cypress-lined paths to an ancient brick chapel, or utter vows on the island’s charming peninsula as sea birds land on the distant marshlands and wild peacocks attend the ceremony,” suggests Allison Zurfluh of Isola Santa Cristina. “A pool area with teak decking sets the backdrop for a romantic outdoor reception, and two patios provide intimate nooks to mix and mingle.

“As the sun sets over the island and some of the guests catch private boats back to Venice or adjoining islands for the night, the villa’s rooftop altana with a panoramic view on the lagoon is an idyllic setting for newlyweds to wave them on their way.”

It takes astute vision to foresee how a collection of abandoned, crumbling Tuscan buildings could return to its former glory, yet this is exactly what propelled the resurrection of the Borgo Finocchieto. Travel with us over the bell towers and Renaissance rooftops of Tuscany and across the rolling vineyards of Montalcino as well delve into the fascinating history and revival of this enchanting 13th-century village.

Borgo-Finocchieto

The Borgo Finocchieto is an exclusive rental villa like no other. Sitting atop the Tuscan hills, with a commanding view of the surrounding valleys and forests, the villa complex consists of five houses divided up into various common areas and 22 suites, the perfect venue for intimate special events.

The buildings previously made up a farming village passed between wealthy Tuscan families for centuries and was inhabited by sharecroppers until the 1980s. From the marvelous site we see today, it’s hard to believe that when its current owners came across it in 2000, all they found was the skeleton of a once-thriving rural community. The abandoned houses and sheds were covered in ivy and weeds while masonry had been pulled apart and some structures had completely collapsed.

Borgo restaurant

The Borgo’s newest patron, an American of Italian ancestry, approached the reconstruction of the Borgo with passion, teaming with a local architect and a crew of builders who had spent lifetimes working with traditional materials and old methods. He tells us a little more about this process below:

“Wherever possible, structures were left untouched – walls, archways, windows and doorways were allowed only where there once had been. The state of disrepair demanded that much be rebuilt, but meticulous care was taken to focus on preserving the surviving structures and employing traditional methods. In some cases, such as the manor house, decorative elements such as door and window treatments, stenciling and original paint colors were faithfully reproduced, while wooden beams, arches and ceilings were restored to their original splendor.”

“After ten years of planning and reconstruction, the Manor House has finally returned to what was, perhaps, its original function, the country retreat of a noble Tuscan family. The other houses, of more modest origin, including at one point a chapel and the housing for the peasants and livestock, have new purpose after decades of disuse. Details like the communal outdoor brick oven and the time-worn steps leading to the main floor of the Manor serve as reminders that despite modern comforts, the Borgo’s history is long and rich.”

Borgo After

The interior also received as much attention as the structural restaurant as described here by the Borgo’s interior designer Karen Hartman:

“The Borgo Finocchieto is decorated in a traditional country Italian theme. The main villa is slightly more formal than the independent houses but still reflects what might have been found in a city family’s country retreat, as suits the great house’s history. All of the furnishings and accessories were found in Italy, although most hail from Tuscany, in and around Siena and Florence. My first choice was to use antique or old pieces, which I often found at markets and fairs. This meant many trips to Arezzo’s world famous market held the first weekend of every month and to Lucca’s market on the third.

“Over the years I have developed a network of dealers, typically family run businesses, specializing in the restoration of period pieces. These enterprises generally include large storage facilities, called magazzini. Here I was encouraged to pick and choose from pieces in their “found” condition and then have them restored. Many of these ateliers also have state-of-the-art fabricating equipment so that, when necessary, I was able commission new pieces. Very often these dealers have specialties such as woodworking, iron mongering, stone cutting, or upholstering, which were handed down through the generations, and the entire family will be involved in the business in some way or another.

“This includes the Calattini family of nearby Poggibonsi, who restore and sell lovely examples of Italian country furniture, as well as operate a thriving business in reproductions. Among the many pieces they supplied for Borgo Finocchieto are the beautifully painted headboards found in most of the bedrooms.”

The best way to understand the transformation of the Borgo is by witnessing it yourself through this wonderful video on its renovation:

Today, this graceful one-of-a-kind venue beckons discerning visitors who are looking for a unique destination for weddings, family reunions, corporate retreats or other gatherings. The main house features an expansive dining room, piano studio, library, media room, conference room, professional kitchen, outdoor terrace, art gallery room and wine cellar. All the suites include private sitting areas as well as en-suite bathrooms. Some of the larger ones have more ample living and dining areas, private outdoor terraces, fireplaces and full kitchens or kitchenettes.

Everything was carefully thought out to keep its historic charm while bringing the Borgo up to 21st century levels of luxury and comfort. The lovely grounds are adorned with local plants and trees, a 60-foot oval pool, diverse sitting areas in addition to tennis, basketball and bocce courts. Inside, guests can relax in the spa with its Jacuzzi tub, cold splash, steam room and dry sauna or keep fit in the well-equipped gym.

The Borgo’s chefs prepare dishes for anything from formal dinners to casual picnics using traditional Tuscan recipes and ingredients paired with modern flare. The artistic and cultural treasures of the region can be easily visited on day trips from the Borgo, though visitors are surrounded by these without ever having to leave the estate.

How to convert the comfort and convenience of a luxury hotel into an authentic local experience—this was the challenge our expert Erica Berman took on, and succeeded at beautifully, in the creation of her company Haven in. Her 20+ years in the luxury apartment and villa rental business has lead her to expand from one studio apartment in Paris to dozens of exquisite properties in various European destinations. Erica tells us more about the evolution of Haven in below.

Erica Berman

It all started with a good idea (and, frankly, a good view).

“My parents are the kind of travelers that only stay in 4-star hotels; the kind who want to explore on their own during the day, but return to something luxurious, full service, and familiar at night. Soon after my move to Paris in 1992, they decided it was time for a visit. As Mom and Dad prepped for their stay, I had an idea. They needed to see the city I fell in love with through the eyes of a local. I would convince them to stay in a friend’s newly renovated penthouse apartment that came with a big bonus: a balcony and a killer view of the Eiffel Tower.

Victor Hugo Chic Haven In

“Not only did they agree, but after their apartment stay, they couldn’t stop raving. Though they’d visited Paris before, this was a fresh vision and a new kind of luxury: living like a local in as if they, too, were Parisians, if only for a while.

“That’s when the idea sparked. If my 4-star hotel, comfort-loving parents could enjoy, even prefer, this type of hotel-alternative experience, certainly other travelers would, too. I took a leap, bought a charming studio in Montmartre with a friend, renovated and decorated it, and spread the word that it was available for rent for vacation stays.

chm-16jh-12

“Being the early days, I marketed in magazines, faxed information, and sent printed photos by snail mail. It was old fashioned and slow. There was no website or even email. Things have greatly changed since the early 1990s and that adorable studio is no longer mine, but it was the incentive to start on a new and exciting path.

Today, Haven in has more than 50 boutique rental listings in Paris, Provence, Tuscany, and London. My team is here to help other creative travelers and luxe lovers to have that same authentic experience and their very own home-away-from-home just as my parents did, all those years ago.

The medieval town of Lucignano in Tuscany - Italy

Lucignano

Halfway between Siena and Arezzo, Katharina Allès Trauttmansdorff of Trust&Travel and excellence.villas takes us to Lucignano, a remarkably well conserved medieval, walled hill-top village.

“Its altitude and strategic position meant that between 1200 and 1500 it was continually the subject of battles between these cities,” reveals Katharina. “Its walls, with three gates, were constructed by the Sienese in 1371. Lucignano is famous for its elliptical shape, the streets are arranged in a circle, a rare example of intact medieval town planning.”

mulino 1

Where to Stay near Lucignano

The refined and rustic Il Mulino villa, available through Trust&Travel and excellence.villas, is located on an organic farm overlooking the picturesque Tuscan landscape, the ideal and relaxing base for exploring this charming corner of the region.

Mulino means mill in Italian and thus the building still retains some of the features of its original purpose including the two long stone walls which used to channel the water from a nearby stream towards the mill. Today these two walls form a natural enclosure for the pool.

The farm was purchased by the Mozzoni Paravicini Crespi family in the 1960’s who carefully restored the farm and its buildings to create a bucolic ideal of a simple lifestyle in harmony with nature and the local farmers who still produces olive oil and raises the local white wide-horned cattle.

The beautiful and charming house has evolved over the centuries. It began as a tower and then expanded with the needs of each new generation. On the ground floor is a large living and dining room with a fireplace and French windows leading onto a terrace covered in vines for al fresco meals. The well-equipped kitchen has a marble-topped table for informal breakfasts as well as an adjacent larder; as well as a single bedroom with shower, and a laundry room.
The first floor has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. A further double and single bedroom with bath are at the end of an outdoor passage. The garden has many inviting corners for reading, writing or dozing in the shade, all fully equipped with outdoor furniture.

Barga

Patrice Salezze of Papavero Villas takes us to the quaint medieval hilltop town of Barga, one of her favorites in this region.

“It’s located north of Lucca in the Garfagnana Valley,” precises Patrice. It’s untouched by mass tourism, it is a little gem. Hidden in the valley the town has charming narrow cobbled streets, tiny squares all topped by a 12th century cathedral. From this vantage point you look out onto the green valley of and the Serchio reiver and up to the Apuan Alps. The original historical center remails with houses going back before over 1000 years.

“British and American painters have been coming here for centuries for inspiration. Wonderful local restaurants where you will be sitting side by side with the natives. This is ideal for mountain biking, canoeing and horseback riding.”

Papavero

Where to Stay Near Barga

Not far from Barga is the exquisite Villa Ave Maria, a quintessential and refined Tuscan villa by Papavero.

Built in the 15th century as a summer home by a noble Luchesse family, it remained in the same family until the 19th century when it was given to an order of monks left homeless when Napoleon sequestered all church property. The monks divided the large rooms to smaller simpler ones and added a secondary school that was attached to the villa.

Fourteen years of restoration and dedication of the friendly couple have brought this villa to its original glory. The villa is decorated in a charming, sophisticated style and sleeps 22 (plus five) in elegantly furnished suites featuring delicately hand-painted ceilings in soft relaxing colors.

The house offers beautiful views over its formal Italian gardens and there is a large pool with a compfortable terrace area. Its location offers a rural setting where you can walk to the neighboring village to experience la dolce vita and warm Italian hospitality.

Montalcino

One of the favorite parts of the region of world traveler Marina Gratsos of Carpe Diem Luxury Travel is the picturesque town of Montalcino, clinging to a hilltop in the Val d’Orcia west of Pienza.

Protected by thick fortifications, the town is practically frozen in time and is an amazing example of Medieval architecture. In your wanders along its narrow streets and neighborhood piazzas, be sure to visit the imposing 13th-century fortress and the Duomo Cathedral. The town is also situated near the regional highlights of the Crete Senesi and Mount Amiata. Due to its strategic location, it offers awe-inspiring views of the olive groves and vineyards where the grapes of the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine grow which Marina insists that anyone visiting the town must sample.

San Gregorio Armeno Street in Naples is known to collectors for its crêche figures. Photo: Angelafoto/iStock

We asked the UltraVilla team about Christmas traditions in their part of the world and got a charming postcard in response from Countess Simonetta Brandolini d’Adda, of The Best in Italy. In addition to providing her villa guests with every amenity you can think of, Simonetta often organizes special tours with top art historians, private museum visits, wine tastings, culinary sessions, music in the villas, sport excursions, shopping expeditions, and more. She writes:

“An important aspect of the holidays throughout Italy is the creation of the presepi, the nativity scenes that are displayed in every church and on many of the main piazzas. These can range from life-size terracotta figures to smaller handmade wooden statues. Whole villages are constructed in miniature, with moving parts and music. There are working fires, mills, and waterfalls, and thousands of characters. The area of San Gregorio Armeno, in Naples, is well known to collectors as entire shops are filled with figures and structures that one can purchase to make a precepe. Many of the towns throughout Italy also have special localized artisans who produce figures and crêche scenes in numerous different styles.”

The tradition of setting the Nativity scene in one’s own small village and populating it with local characters is not exclusive to Italy. A Provençal crêche is likely to include a fish monger pushing his cart, a baker carrying a basket of fougasses, a farmer’s wife with a chicken under her arm, a garlic seller, the village doctor, and the mayor. Originally made from breadcrumbs, plaster, wax, or crushed glass, the terra-cotta figures, called santons (“little saints”), have been created by some of the same families for generations. You can see their handiwork at the big santon fair in Marseille, which dates to the nineteenth century. The fair is organized by the santonniers and runs until December 31.
