Sylvia Delvaille Jones of Villas and Apartments Abroad tells us why this is such an idyllic destination at this time of year:

“Witness the first signs of springtime showcasing new life… fresh branches and pale green leaves, baby birds, butterflies and other creatures of nature making their presence known by their chirping, pecking and hopping sounds. Delicate blooms like posies designed just for you sprout from the ground; branches laden with eager buds can’t wait to burst. The rushing of streams, all calling out that new life is here at the gate of summer when beauty exploded into a galaxy of colors and life.

It features a hand-chiseled triple height barn and numerous old fireplaces, yet has been modernized to have all the amenities and comforts of a 21st century home. There are several dining areas, an antique barroom, a large comfortable TV room with 70” flatscreen, a sitting room with floor to ceiling bookshelves. Two of the additional bedrooms have king beds, three rooms have queen beds, and the last bedroom has a twin.

“Within the estate of 29 acres there is a beautiful swimming pool carved out of the natural rocks and access to the woods via a wooden bridge over the stream. There are various outdoor areas for entertaining and relaxing. Plus I would be remiss not to mention the chef’s kitchen where an excellent chef can be hired to prepare fabulous summer meals using vegetables, fruits and herbs straight from the garden. The area also has some top restaurants that offer the best of culinary experiences.

“The privacy makes this the perfect place for those quiet families, entertainers and others in the know wanting to get away from NYC or any of the tri-states for peaceful and indulging break in total relaxation mind, body and soul.”

It takes astute vision to foresee how a collection of abandoned, crumbling Tuscan buildings could return to its former glory, yet this is exactly what propelled the resurrection of the Borgo Finocchieto. Travel with us over the bell towers and Renaissance rooftops of Tuscany and across the rolling vineyards of Montalcino as well delve into the fascinating history and revival of this enchanting 13th-century village.

Borgo-Finocchieto

The Borgo Finocchieto is an exclusive rental villa like no other. Sitting atop the Tuscan hills, with a commanding view of the surrounding valleys and forests, the villa complex consists of five houses divided up into various common areas and 22 suites, the perfect venue for intimate special events.

The buildings previously made up a farming village passed between wealthy Tuscan families for centuries and was inhabited by sharecroppers until the 1980s. From the marvelous site we see today, it’s hard to believe that when its current owners came across it in 2000, all they found was the skeleton of a once-thriving rural community. The abandoned houses and sheds were covered in ivy and weeds while masonry had been pulled apart and some structures had completely collapsed.

Borgo restaurant

The Borgo’s newest patron, an American of Italian ancestry, approached the reconstruction of the Borgo with passion, teaming with a local architect and a crew of builders who had spent lifetimes working with traditional materials and old methods. He tells us a little more about this process below:

“Wherever possible, structures were left untouched – walls, archways, windows and doorways were allowed only where there once had been. The state of disrepair demanded that much be rebuilt, but meticulous care was taken to focus on preserving the surviving structures and employing traditional methods. In some cases, such as the manor house, decorative elements such as door and window treatments, stenciling and original paint colors were faithfully reproduced, while wooden beams, arches and ceilings were restored to their original splendor.”

“After ten years of planning and reconstruction, the Manor House has finally returned to what was, perhaps, its original function, the country retreat of a noble Tuscan family. The other houses, of more modest origin, including at one point a chapel and the housing for the peasants and livestock, have new purpose after decades of disuse. Details like the communal outdoor brick oven and the time-worn steps leading to the main floor of the Manor serve as reminders that despite modern comforts, the Borgo’s history is long and rich.”

Borgo After

The interior also received as much attention as the structural restaurant as described here by the Borgo’s interior designer Karen Hartman:

“The Borgo Finocchieto is decorated in a traditional country Italian theme. The main villa is slightly more formal than the independent houses but still reflects what might have been found in a city family’s country retreat, as suits the great house’s history. All of the furnishings and accessories were found in Italy, although most hail from Tuscany, in and around Siena and Florence. My first choice was to use antique or old pieces, which I often found at markets and fairs. This meant many trips to Arezzo’s world famous market held the first weekend of every month and to Lucca’s market on the third.

“Over the years I have developed a network of dealers, typically family run businesses, specializing in the restoration of period pieces. These enterprises generally include large storage facilities, called magazzini. Here I was encouraged to pick and choose from pieces in their “found” condition and then have them restored. Many of these ateliers also have state-of-the-art fabricating equipment so that, when necessary, I was able commission new pieces. Very often these dealers have specialties such as woodworking, iron mongering, stone cutting, or upholstering, which were handed down through the generations, and the entire family will be involved in the business in some way or another.

“This includes the Calattini family of nearby Poggibonsi, who restore and sell lovely examples of Italian country furniture, as well as operate a thriving business in reproductions. Among the many pieces they supplied for Borgo Finocchieto are the beautifully painted headboards found in most of the bedrooms.”

The best way to understand the transformation of the Borgo is by witnessing it yourself through this wonderful video on its renovation:

Today, this graceful one-of-a-kind venue beckons discerning visitors who are looking for a unique destination for weddings, family reunions, corporate retreats or other gatherings. The main house features an expansive dining room, piano studio, library, media room, conference room, professional kitchen, outdoor terrace, art gallery room and wine cellar. All the suites include private sitting areas as well as en-suite bathrooms. Some of the larger ones have more ample living and dining areas, private outdoor terraces, fireplaces and full kitchens or kitchenettes.

Everything was carefully thought out to keep its historic charm while bringing the Borgo up to 21st century levels of luxury and comfort. The lovely grounds are adorned with local plants and trees, a 60-foot oval pool, diverse sitting areas in addition to tennis, basketball and bocce courts. Inside, guests can relax in the spa with its Jacuzzi tub, cold splash, steam room and dry sauna or keep fit in the well-equipped gym.

The Borgo’s chefs prepare dishes for anything from formal dinners to casual picnics using traditional Tuscan recipes and ingredients paired with modern flare. The artistic and cultural treasures of the region can be easily visited on day trips from the Borgo, though visitors are surrounded by these without ever having to leave the estate.

See the results of the impressive restoration work done at the Borgo in the below amazing drone video “tour” of the site or reach out to the Borgo at this link to start designing your own special event at this truly magical destination.

Ithaca Island, Greece June 2009 (http://www.cedricreversade.com)

Ithaca, Greece

There are thousands of Greek islands, however, if you’re looking for the perfect peaceful escape, venture deep into the Ionian Sea to extraordinarily beautiful and tranquil Ithaca. Situated off the northeast coast of Kefalonia and to the west of continental Greece, the rugged island features steep cliffs, arid mountains and rolling olive groves.

“The island is kept pristine through truly awful ferry connections that improve in the summer, but for seven months of the year, Ithaca is cast adrift,” explains Ileana von Hirsch, director of Five Star Greece. “The result is minimal development, and those who build villas there are true aficionados with the taste and resources to do wonderful things.”

Five Star Greece have several stunning villas on this lovely island, some with even their own private beach, making them the ideal remote island getaway. Find out more about these exquisite properties by reaching out to Five Star Greece here.

The Bahamas

Man Island, Bahamas

Many of the islands of the Bahamas are idyllic, however, if you want to spend the day on your own deserted island, boat out to Man Island. This 35-acre land mass is located off the north tip of Harbour Island, which would make the perfect base for a stay in the area.

“It’s east side has beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and the west side faces a natural harbor,” describes Pamela H. Murdock, our local Bahamas expert. ”Stop at the Dunmore Deli, Bahamas Coffee Roasters or Arthur’s Bakery for sandwiches etc. then charter a boat through Jeff (he can also drop you off and collect you at an appointed hour) and take a picnic to the island. A word of caution: make sure you leave in the late afternoon before the sand flies come out – and they do with a vengeance! The island has been owned for many years by several people, though the sip sip (Bahamian slang for “gossip”) is that investors are looking at it due to its proximity to hugely popular Harbour Island.”

Pamela H. Murdock has some gorgeous villas and fabulous knowledge of the Bahamas to help assist you to plan the perfect trip, and boating excursions, to this splendid part of the Caribbean. Contact her here.

French Cay, Turks and Caicos

Found southeast of the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos are made up of 40 different islands, several of which are deserted or almost. If you’re staying on Providenciales, plan an excursion to French Cay, a small island and national bird sanctuary 29 kilometers (18 miles) south and reachable by boat in about an hour. With historical intrigue from its days as an 18th-century pirate outpost, French Cay is a fabulous place for snorkeling and diving over its reefs, as well as over nearby Molasses Reef where you can explore an ancient shipwreck. Permission must be granted to dock, but once on land, no other islands can be seen from this low lying island, creating you own deserted island experience. There’s a small beach on the north side of the cay where you can relax after your diving. Discover where to stay in the Turks and Caicos at this link.

How to convert the comfort and convenience of a luxury hotel into an authentic local experience—this was the challenge our expert Erica Berman took on, and succeeded at beautifully, in the creation of her company Haven in. Her 20+ years in the luxury apartment and villa rental business has lead her to expand from one studio apartment in Paris to dozens of exquisite properties in various European destinations. Erica tells us more about the evolution of Haven in below.

Erica Berman

It all started with a good idea (and, frankly, a good view).

“My parents are the kind of travelers that only stay in 4-star hotels; the kind who want to explore on their own during the day, but return to something luxurious, full service, and familiar at night. Soon after my move to Paris in 1992, they decided it was time for a visit. As Mom and Dad prepped for their stay, I had an idea. They needed to see the city I fell in love with through the eyes of a local. I would convince them to stay in a friend’s newly renovated penthouse apartment that came with a big bonus: a balcony and a killer view of the Eiffel Tower.

Victor Hugo Chic Haven In

“Not only did they agree, but after their apartment stay, they couldn’t stop raving. Though they’d visited Paris before, this was a fresh vision and a new kind of luxury: living like a local in as if they, too, were Parisians, if only for a while.

“That’s when the idea sparked. If my 4-star hotel, comfort-loving parents could enjoy, even prefer, this type of hotel-alternative experience, certainly other travelers would, too. I took a leap, bought a charming studio in Montmartre with a friend, renovated and decorated it, and spread the word that it was available for rent for vacation stays.

chm-16jh-12

“Being the early days, I marketed in magazines, faxed information, and sent printed photos by snail mail. It was old fashioned and slow. There was no website or even email. Things have greatly changed since the early 1990s and that adorable studio is no longer mine, but it was the incentive to start on a new and exciting path.

Today, Haven in has more than 50 boutique rental listings in Paris, Provence, Tuscany, and London. My team is here to help other creative travelers and luxe lovers to have that same authentic experience and their very own home-away-from-home just as my parents did, all those years ago.

Casole desla Tuscany Haven in

“We are a business built on the joy of discovery, from unearthing the best local spots and tasting new flavors, to simply helping you get to know a new part of yourself in a new place—somewhere you feel at home, whether it’s for a vacation, an extended stay, or a lifetime.” —Erica Berman Creator, Haven in
