Why is Tuscany so eternally popular? Travelers have been flocking here since the Middle Ages, drawn by medieval and Renaissance hilltop towns, fabled villas and gardens, sandy beaches, and rolling hills covered in olive groves and cypresses. The spirit of Tuscany can be found in a Piero della Francesca fresco, a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino riserva, or a bowl of panzanella (the Tuscan equivalent of gazpacho) in a little trattoria, for this is a region that has long honored beauty and quality.

Picturesque Landscape & Charming Villages

Much of the region’s present landscape, dotted with ancient villages, would be recognized by Michelangelo and Tuscany’s art-filled historic cities which continue to draw admirers from all corners of the world. It would be hard to by-pass Florence, birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and home to world-class museums, stunning churches and one of the most enchanting city-center in the world. Ofter overshadowed by its bigger sister, Siena is equally charming and is one of the best preserved medieval cities in the world. Try to go in summer to experience its legendary Palio race firsthand. Many travelers also like stopping in at Pisa to see its famous leaning tower, while other smaller cities like Lucca and Arezzo are just as picturesque, though much less crowded.

No visit to Tuscany would be complete without spending some time ambled through its small villages like San Gimignano or lesser known Pienzo and Lucignano where you’ll feel like your traveling back to another era. Getting out of the larger cities also gives you the chance of discovering the region’s phenomenally delicious food and wine from the cheese-makers of the Val d’Orcia to the vineyards of Montalcino.

A private villa, its kitchen commandeered by a fabulous local chef, is the best way to connect with Tuscany’s landscape, history, food, and people. Guests who can tear themselves away from the quiet gardens, discreet pool, and charming staff for a day of exploring return from their adventures to the peace and beauty of a home-away-from-home in the Tuscan hills.
