Paraty, Brazil

Paraty – Brazil

Paraty is a beautiful colonial town between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, only a few hours drive from both cities. It’s a favorite of our local Brazil expert Martin Frankenberg of Matueté Villas, who tells us a little more about this lovely destination.

“Settled in the mid-17th century, when gold was discovered in this region, Paraty became the most important port to transport it over to Portugal,” explains Martin. “Set in one of the most stunning stretches of the Brazilian coastline, it unites great private villas, good hotels and restaurants, vibrant culture and nightlife, great local shopping, tropical rainforest treks, waterfalls, and a bay filled with islands and virgin beaches, which are best explored by private boat.”

Matueté has a range of villas in the town center and also on an island only 10 minutes away by boat from town. Discover their luxury accommodation options in Paraty here.

Colonia del Sacramento – Uruguay

The small, understated country of Uruguay has one of South America’s prettiest colonial towns: Colonia del Sacramento. It was founded in 1680 by Manuel Lobo, the Portuguese governor of Rio de Janeiro, choosing the location for its strategic position across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, then controlled by the Spanish.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the charming historic center is crisscrossed by cobbled streets lined with charming cafés, boutiques, historic homes and an array of colonial buildings. You can easily trace the ramparts around the city, punctuated by the town gate. The brave who climb the stairs to the top of the El Faro 19th-century lighthouse are rewarded by an impressive view of the Barrio Historico and shimmering waters of the Rio de la Plata. Since the town is set on the north side of the vast river, it’s the perfect vantage point to savor spectacular sunsets.

Colonia is a great day-trip from Buenos Aires or make Uruguay your holiday destination by staying at the beautiful Villa Neptuno, available through Marina Gratsos of Carpe Diem Luxury Travel and situated further up the coast near the lovely seaside resort of Punta del Este.

San Miguel de Allende – Mexico

Considered one of the most beautiful towns in Mexico, the picturesque colonial city of San Miguel de Allende marvels visitors. Nestled in the Bajio mountains in the center of the country, the colonial city was founded by the Spanish in 1542 and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

“It became an important stop on the silver route between Zacatecas and Mexico City,” explains our local expert Pamela H. Murdock. “This rise in prominence is evident in the splendor of the city’s architecture. One of the reason’s the city remains so special is that it was declared a national monument in 1926 and therefore all new construction must conform to the colonial architecture.”

The old town, with its cobblestone streets and lovely historic buildings, has a magical ambiance. Many visitors start their explorations in El Jardín, the lively main plaza animated by artists, musicians and street vendors. Here you can find La Parroquia, neo-gothic and baroque cathedral with a Moorish bell tower. There’s also a fabulous artisanal market where authentic local handicrafts can be purchased.

The city is also known for its impressive historic homes, like the magical Quinta Quebrada, represented by Pamela. Hidden by tall walls, the 16th-century house is set on almost one acre of graceful grounds encompassing courtyards, terraces, follies, gardens of climbing roses and cascading bougainvillea, loggias, a pool and a hot tub.

Complete your marvelous trip to San Miguel by staying at Quinta Quebrada. Find out more about this one-of-a-kind house here.

Bridgetown – Barbados

One of the best preserved British colonial cities of the Caribbean is beautiful Bridgetown, Barbados – so much so, its Garrison and historic core have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The charming old town has buildings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, architectural representations of the power of Great Britain’s colonial empire. It was one of the first fortified ports of the Caribbean, which led it to become one of the most important British trading ports in the region.

A visit to Bridgetown wouldn’t be complete without admiring the famous Garrison. Established in 1780, it’s the largest 18th to 19th centuries garrison of the British Colonies. A walk through the old town will also take you past several other historic buildings like the Parliament buildings, St Michael’s Cathedral and the Georgian era George Washington House. History buffs will enjoy learning more about the early days of the island at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, located in the former Military Prison.

Soak up the colonial spirit and relaxed Caribbean vibe by staying at one of Altman Villa Rentals‘ exquisite collection of properties on the island. Learn more about their opulent holiday rentals at this link.

Cockburn Town – Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos

The capital of the Caribbean archipelago of the Turks & Caicos, Cockburn Town is said to be where Christopher Columbus first set foot on the “New World” in 1492. Visitors to the small city of 5,500 inhabitants will travel back in time as they stroll past the rows of colorful colonial buildings along narrow streets like Duke and Font Streets.

In your wanderings, seek out the Lighthouse, Fire Hill and the Hawks Nest Anchorage. Along your way, you’re likely to spot some donkey carts, still in use on the island. Stop in at the National Museum to delve further into the country’s history, a focal point of the exhibit is on the Molasses Reef Wreck, the oldest European shipwreck discovered in the Western Hemisphere (from around 1505).

Our experts at In Villas Veritas have a multitude of wonderful villas scattered around the islands of the Turks & Caicos. Let them assist you to plan the perfect trip here.

DunmoreSchool

Dunmore Town – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

The Bahamas is also rich in Caribbean colonial history. A lesser known pearl is the charming town of Dunmore on Harbour Island, crowned by Travel + Leisure as the “Best Island” in 2015. It was founded in the late eighteenth century and named after the governor of the Bahamas from 1786 to 1798, John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, who had a home on the island.

“The pretty town is lined with pastel colored clapboard cottages with picket fences and gardens full of colorful bougainvillea, oleander, hibiscus and other flowers,” describes Pamela H. Murdock, our local expert for the Bahamas. “Life on the island is laidback and peaceful, helped by the fact that there are no cars—only golf carts.”

For a small town of less than 1,800 inhabitants, Dunmore has a fabulous variety of authentic and delicious dining options from fancy bistros to tasty food shacks. Pamela shares her favorites in this article.

Sometimes travel can come from a surprising twist of fate. That’s exactly what happened to Pamela Murdock, an UltraVilla expert for Harbour Island in the Bahamas and San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Read on to discover how an unexpected envelope in the mail allowed her to start traveling and eventually led her to create her bespoke villa rental company.

pamela-murdock-photo-cropped

“When I was 20, “my” bank in New York made the innocent mistake of sending me a credit card. It was a miserably hot summer, I was dying to escape and, as usual, was short of funds. And then the MasterCard arrived. I’d barely opened the envelope when I realized I was holding the solution. Not only could I charge the airfare, I could also rent a small house so that my Labrador could come too. Because Lulu and I loved the beach, I started renting on Caribbean islands that allowed dogs to visit as well. When she became too old to travel, I branched out to other locations including the Bahamas and Mexico.

“After years of various jobs, 18 of them as a publicist in New York City, I decided to turn something I loved doing for myself into a business: finding vacation house rentals. I was sure if I liked the property friends would too and happily they always did. Those friends referred their friends and my business continued to grow. My goal has never been to have as many listings as possible. I prefer to keep my company small and customized. It also doesn’t matter to me whether someone would like a simple beach shack or a grand villa with staff, the effort put into finding the right place remains the same. And once on holiday, the only thing I want my clients to have to think about is what fun thing to do next.

“Now 16 years later, I still look at each prospective house as though I was taking it for myself. I still want to know what surrounds the property, what the views really are, whether the bathroom has a tub or shower and what size beds are in each room (reading “double bedroom” on a website doesn’t work for me.)

“In destinations like Harbour Island, Bahamas (pictured above), I’ve developed an extensive list of contacts and am happy to be able to offer clients the following services: arranging golf cart rental, advance grocery shopping, extra maid service, a cook (managing all details), in-house massage, personal training, restaurant reservations, special events and boat charters for diving, snorkeling, picnics and fishing (deep sea and bone) as well as organizing a taxi from/to the airport and round trip water taxi service. Very detailed information about any location is also provided.

“By the way, over 40 years later, I’m still renting vacation houses for myself and yes, still using that MasterCard to pay for them (albeit making much larger monthly payments for which the bank is happy)!” – Pamela H. Murdock

Visitors are treated to some of the best Christmas markets in Europe, plentiful meals of hearty Austrian specialties and graceful Christmas concerts in quaint local churches. You can make the most of this festive ambiance in the picturesque Salzkammergut area, near Salzburg. Our expert Monika Mayr-Melnhof of Schloss Kogl castle, gives us some further tips.

“Of course, Salzburg has a wide variety of events and some excellent Advent markets, however, there are some exceptionally charming markets in nearly every village in the Salzkammergut,” says Monika. “The ones I like most are around the lakes like in St.Gilgen, St Wolfgang and Strobl.

“From November 20th to December 20th 2016 you can enjoy the Advent of the Villages event which takes place in the six villages of Fuschlsee. The weekends feature additional events like concerts and sleigh rides. St Wolfgang has some fabulous festive spirit around the market, plus you can also take boat rides on the lake.”

You can make enjoy the region’s Christmas spirit to the fullest with a pre-Christmas stay at the elegant Schloss Kogl castle, which has availability from now until December 24th (and then from January 2nd). A short drive from the pretty village of St. Georgen i. Attergau, the baroque castle was originally built in 1750 for the noble Khevenhüller family. In 1872 the Barons of Mayr-Melnhof acquired it and today the 4th, 5th and 6th generations of the family still reside at the castle.

In 2000, the entire castle was fully renovated with careful attention to retaining its historic character and beauty. In the evenings after you’ve toured the markets, relax by the cozy fireplace in the library or savor a gourmet meal in the refined dining room.

“With trees covered in white, icicles adorning wooden chalets and the crunch of snow underfoot the stage is set for a magical holiday,” describes James. “You can ski the extensive slopes of the Parsenn by day, stopping for cosy hot chocolates in the charming mountain restaurants that adorn the slopes. In the evening you can go out to dinner by horse and sleigh.

“On Christmas night the bells of the old Church of St Jakob ring in Christmas celebration. And if you can arrive earlier enough, you might be able to caught the London Philharmonia Orchestra and Lund Student Choir will be performing in Klosters Church on Saturday December 17th and Sunday the 18th. These concerts would be a lovely way to kick start Christmas!

“Tucked away in the heart of the beautiful Prattigau Valley, Klosters is a hidden gem which has maintained its authentic charm. Chalets built in the traditional style blend happily with local farmhouses while the absence of large tour operators and its safe and cosy atmosphere make Klosters a perfect choice for family holidays. Glamorous and up market, but at the same time cosy and low key, it combines all this with the comfort and convenience of a modern ski resort.”

With their extensive local experience PT Ski can organise every aspect of your holiday to Klosters. Their helpful staff will be on hand to show you round the slopes, negating the need to wrestle with piste maps. Why not stay at the stunning Chalet Bear, a beautiful log chalet, lovingly restored in 2006 to create one of the finest chalets available for rent in Klosters. The interior has been sensitively decorated to maintain all the character of a traditional chalet, but with the comfort of a luxury home. Within easy walking distance of the lifts and centre of Klosters village, it is perched on a small hill with beautiful views of the valley.

Chalet Bear has four floors and sleeps up to eight guests in four bedrooms. There is one double room with en-suite bathroom and the other three rooms are twins. Two of these have their own bathrooms and the third is en-suite. The entrance hall is on the first floor and here there is a very comfortable sitting room with large fireplace, a television room/study with DVD and internet access, and a small pantry/bar. A former hunting lodge of the Earls of Bantry, it has received such illustrious guests as Wordsworth, Thackeray, Prince Puckler Muskau and Lady Hall who describes her experience as follows:

“After crossing another bridge one is invited to ascend a soft and gentle looking hill which commanded a scene fit to illustrate The Happy Valley; nothing could be more delicious, more varied, more enchanting than the panoramic view, a view of such luxuriance that painters there might study nature under every shade and form”.

The enchanting lodge was completely renovated in 2006 and now boasts a tasteful combination of historic character and modern luxury, with accommodation for up to eight people in four double bedrooms with three ensuite. Three of the bedrooms, including the master bedroom with en-suite, are on the second floor and feature a unique decor and spectacular views over the river and/or grounds. Faringdon House – Oxfordshire, England

England truly embraces Christmas. Buildings are decked out to their finests with lights and decorations, delectable holiday specialties are abundant and a festive cheers echos throughout the country. After you’ve done your Christmas shopping in London, retreat to Faringdon House, one of the loveliest manor homes of Oxfordshire, or possibly even the whole country.

Available through Loyd & Townsend Rose, this fully staffed 18th-century manor is only a one-hour train ride from London (Paddington Station). The current Georgian house was built in 1785 on the site of an Elizabethan house that had been badly damaged by fire. It can comfortably accommodate up to 14 guests in eight luxurious double bedrooms. There is also additional accommodation for staff and domestic offices. The classic and refined interior rooms feature beautiful mouldings, like the beautiful examples adoring the chimney breast above the fireplace in the dining room.

The elegance is carried over into the gorgeous gardens and parkland surrounding the house, secluding it from the nearby thriving and historic market town of Faringdon. A stroll of the grounds will grant you magnificent panoramic views of the valley or the fine lawns towards Faringdon Church. Nestled on the grounds, you can seek out the orangery, a walled garden, the orchard and lake with its boathouse. You can also explore them on horseback as the estate has extensive stabling for horses, should you wish to bring any.

The manor and the area are an idyllic place to spend Christmas or New Year and celebrate the festive period. Plus it’s an excellent base for exploring Oxford (21 miles away) and Cirencester (20 miles).

Have your own very merry Christmas at Faringdon by contacting Loyd & Townsend Rose at this link.

For some, the end of the year holidays are a time for gathering family and friends next to a twinkling Christmas tree or toasty fireplace. For others, it’s a time to soak up some sunshine while recharging your batteries next to a gorgeous pool or on a pristine beach. We please the latter in this first roundup of our favorite places for the holidays as we crisscross the globe from New Zealand to Costa Rica and from Uruguay to Thailand in search of the ultimate sunny villas to ring in the season.

Quinta Quebrada – San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

If you’re looking for a sunny destination in the Americas which also exudes unique holiday spirit, consider venturing to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Nestled in the mountains in the center of the country, according to our Mexico expert Pamela H. Murdock, this charming colonial city is a magical place to spend the holidays. Pamela has holidayed at the captivating historic home Quinta Quebrada during this time of year and she shares this enchanting experience below:

“There are lights everywhere as well as nativity scenes, parades, pop-up fireworks (don’t get too close!) and the famous Las Posadas. Taking place the nine nights leading up to Christmas Eve, Las Posadas (inns or shelters), start with a procession that represents the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. People holding candles sing Christmas carols as they walk and are joined by “Mary” (usually riding a donkey) and “Joseph”. The parade meanders through streets and knocks on house doors while singing the traditional Posada Song, “Pidiendo Posada,”(Begging for Shelter). However, they’re turned away because there is “no room at the inn.” “After all, sings the household, you might be a rogue.” Finally they find an open door and everyone is given food and hot drinks while the children have at piñatas until they break and spill candy everywhere. A good time is truly had by all.

“New Year’s Eve in San Miguel takes merriment to a whole new level! Though the main celebration takes place in the Jardín, the principal plaza, the whole town becomes a fiesta. Everyone comes out for the mariachi bands, giant sparklers, food vendors, gigantes (people dressed as giant puppets) and dancing which can go on till all hours. Then at midnight a huge fireworks display lights up the sky above the Parroquia (a lovely church beside the Jardín). Throughout the evening, people also set off their own fireworks which can be a little too exciting for some with rockets whizzing everywhere. It’s an incredible sight and great fun. If you’re not up for the street scene, make a reservation well in advance at La Posadita or La Azotea or at one of the hotels with a rooftop bar/restaurant like Rosewood or El Palomar. The view of the fireworks will be wonderful. San Miguel seems to celebrate more holidays than any other in Mexico and New Year’s Eve is the ultimate.

“Since the holidays are all about family and friends, why not bring a group and rent the most famous house in town? Quinta Quebrada is a magnificent and magical 16th century casa with 11 bedrooms and a wonderful large staff. Hidden behind tall walls which enclose almost one acre of gorgeous grounds, you’ll find courtyards, follies, gardens full of climbing roses and cascading bougainvillea, multiple terraces and loggias, a pool and a hot tub. I’ve stayed there often and each time is still a treat!”

Comprised of 333 tropical islands surrounded by dazzling turquoise waters, Fiji is one of the world’s most spectacular tropical paradises. While it may seem far removed from the industrialized world, it is not safe from modern-day environmental perils. Considering oceans cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface, though less than 4% of these waters are fully protected, places like Fiji are particularly concerned by the worsening conditions of their ecosystems. Some locals, like our local experts at Vatuvara Private Islands, are taking matters into their own hands by embarking in grassroots efforts. Krystel Gough of Vatuvara Private Islands tells us more about this important issue and the initiatives they are undertaking to make a difference.

Vatuvara Private Islands is nestled in the northern Lau group of Fijian Islands. The islands of Vatuvara, Kaibu and Yacata islands are filled with a diversity of wildlife, including the unique and endangered Coconut Crab. These remote islands are an awe-inspiring destination filled with lush forests and bordered by spectacular beaches and azure waters.

The all-inclusive resort is only accessible by private plane, granting guests the ultimate private escape where they can switch off from the rest of the world. In addition, the resort only has three one-bedroom villas, therefore, it’s virtually a private experience (exclusive buyouts are also possible). Each spacious villa has been designed to incorporate local character and its natural surroundings. They include luxurious appointments and have private infinity pool.

As beautiful as it is, Fiji is seriously threatened by climate change, overfishing, local human population growth and increased demand, threats to marine turtles and the coconut crab as well as the failure to enforce regulations. In 2015, stemming from this growing list of dangers, the Fijian government set a target of placing 30% of its waters under protected status by 2020. This has provided a positive platform of support for environmental initiatives.

However, unexpected challenges do arise which can thwart local efforts and aggravate the situation as a whole, such as the Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston which hit the archipelago in February 2016. It was the strongest tropical cyclone on record in the Southern Hemisphere. Despite the terrifying devastation left behind – the resilience, beauty, and strength of Fiji has been amazing. That said it did underline that anthropogenic climate change is a reality and island nations are the first victims.

100104-3

“Vatuvara is resolutely committed to bolstering ocean preservation by taking local action,” says Krystel. “Small changes can collectively make a huge impact on our world. As such, we are striving to provide innovative opportunities to engage and educate ocean users, such as Fiji’s rural island communities with the world beneath the waves and to understand their personal opportunity to protect the planet.”

The team at Vatuvara Private Islands is making long-term commitments to self-sustain their surrounding islands and to encourage healthy and resilient oceans through empowering communities to be responsible stewards of their marine resources. They have a variety of local education projects. One of these involves strengthening awareness in local communities especially by addressing livelihood needs through programs for rural women. They are also involving islands’ youth by connecting children to their beaches and the ocean, helping them realize the impact their actions have on the ocean.

“Children are the future and if they can become the voices of the ocean, they will convert into teachers to the world and successfully raise awareness,” notes Krystel sagely.

The staff at Vatuvara Private Island work carefully with all guests to design a bespoke holiday on the island which can include various wellbeing and cultural experiences in addition to a number different community interactions.
