One of UltraVilla’s directors, Andrew Loyd of Loyd and Townsend Rose vividly narrates his recent voyage to Oman with bespoke luxury holiday specialists cazenove+loyd. Amble along the sandy dunes, wander the ancient cities and savor the culinary delicacies of this unique country with him below.

img_0688

In early November we were lucky enough to experience a wonderful eight day trip to Oman organised superbly by cazenove+loyd. Flying club class anywhere is a treat and Oman air is no exception. Long flights are always a drain but they looked after us beautifully, although the cabin was a little stuffy. Arriving into Muscat from drizzly, cold London into that heat was a jolt but after the usual immigration muddle we met our drivers and embarked on a 2.5 hour drive into the mountains, for our first four nights in this amazing country.

img_0517

The Alila Jabal Akhdar hotel sits in Al Hajar mountain range, one of Oman’s most beautiful regions. Perched over 2,000 metres above sea level, the hotel overlooks a dramatic gorge and is surrounded by awe-inspiring views of the Al Hajar Mountains. We returned down the mountain one day to visit the ancient city of Nizwa and some other local forts, stock up on dates & silver from the local market and had a very amusing lunch where we were put into a rather eccentric cubicle, with a bird chiming bell to summon the waiter. Otherwise we mainly stayed in the mountains to walk and explore the area, combined with some wonderful time spent in the infinity pool gazing across the gorge and the odd spoiling massage. Being in situ for the US election results was a bit surreal and I spent the early hours of the morning in the hotel’s gym watching its huge TV as the results trickled in. Our US guest was rather depressed at breakfast! We all thought the hotel was incredibly stylish, the food delicious and the staff delightful, especially our guide Ali, who was a very impressive man.

img_0721

From here we took another long drive into the desert for a night under canvas and after another slightly eccentric but delicious lunch we arrived, having let some air out of the tires so our driver could put his foot down across the desert, at our camp suitably called Desert Nights. Each couple had their own tent/cabin which came with safari style plumbing but more importantly excellent A/C. We had time to freshen up before an evening camel ride to see the sunset, led by two charming Bedouin boys who encouraged a singalong on the way home. The sunset was a magical site dropping below the dunes and we all loved being in the desert. The open air dinner was rather magical and an amazing buffet was laid on, including a lot of very non Arabic puddings! After any equally delicious early breakfast, the next day we had a very exciting high speed quad bike ride across the dunes, which was a brilliant way to further explore the desert.

img_0653

We then rejoined our drivers and guide and raced back across the desert, to the nearest town, refilled the tyres and then headed for Muscat. Another long drive but the Sultan has built fantastic roads, an achievement even more amazing considering that when he came to power in 1974, there were only five miles of paved roads in a country the size of Britain. Now you can travel in comfort across the country. We stopped off after a couple of hours for a much needed swim and some lunch in a famous wadi, where some of our party were led by local boys into diving into the pools from terrifyingly high rocks. After another 2 hour drive and a quick ice cream stop, we eventually reached Muscat and the famous Al Bustan Palace hotel for our final 3 nights. The Chedi is often spoken of as the city’s best hotel but the location of the Al Bustan is hard to beat, being a minute from the private yacht port, where we had hired a boat and five minutes from the dive centre. The hotel also has amazing beaches, although my wife and I managed to quite badly cut our feet on some rocks during low tide, which was a slight bore.

img_0971

However the boat trip for snorkelling was amazing and we saw some wonderful fish. A later diving trip was equally successful. Another sightseeing morning spent in Muscat was equally enjoyable and the Grand Mosque was amazingly beautiful. We had the most charming retired policeman to drive us who kept on referring to the three McDonald’s we passed, as the ‘American Embassy’. The garden restaurant of Kargeen produced some of the best food we had eaten all week and is a must. The staff were incredible. The Al Bustan is a slightly faded hotel and not a place my wife would normally choose preferring less opulent places but they do look after guests brilliantly and the slightly dated rooms are large and offer great views over the gardens and out to sea. I have never eaten some much hummus as on this trip but it and indeed all the food was always so delicious.

img_0976

We were incredibly impressed with the beauty of Oman and the warmth of its people. The Sultan seems genuinely loved and his oil wealth seems to have been wisely spent. We saw no run down housing and 84% of Omanis own their own home, the infrastructure is excellent and there is virtually no unemployment. The male section of the grand mosque is unbelievably opulent compared with the rather dreary ladies section but by middle- eastern standards, this seemed a well- integrated society and one confident about its future. Cazenove & Loyd organised a very special trip for us and arranged everything beautifully. – by Andrew Loyd of Loyd and Townsend Rose

In this edition of How We Started we journey to Mexico’s stunning Yucatan Peninsula where we learn how our experts at Catherwood Travels are helping save the region’s haciendas. The conversion of these historic homes into holiday rentals is keeping them from being on the brink of extinction. Discover more about this issue and Catherwood’s involvement in it below.

angelica-espinosa-catherwood

“I was invited to join Catherwood Travels in 2010 by happy coincidences, originated from my years working with the Yucatan Tourism Bureau and my time abroad studying in Spain. I was amazed to learn the history behind the company and the great amount of effort spent in creating this project. The challenge was big as the company was considered a pipe dream: we were going to spread the word of a Yucatan barely known.

“Six years later, I’m not only proud to represent a successful company that is socially committed to the region and Mexico but also fortunate to share my passion for the Maya civilization with discerning travelers.

hacienda-tamchen-2

“The initial haciendas on the Yucatan peninsula were established after the 16th century for agricultural and/or livestock production. In fact the term means “large estate or plantation with a dwelling.” A number of indigenous people settled around these buildings to work the fields, and it was the hacienda owners’ responsibility to provide shelter, food and education, in addition to introducing the people to the Catholic faith.

“In the mid-19th century, the production and sale of sisal fiber began to grow in importance. At that time, the Peninsula produced 90% of the rope and sacking used in the entire world, which brought great wealth to the owners of the sisal haciendas.

“The total number of haciendas in the Yucatan rose to close to 1,100 between 1850 and 1920, which was known as the “Green Gold” period. These imposing structures were, in many cases, designed by important local or foreign architects, many of whom were European.

“The region’s most important haciendas engaged in an economy that made use of its own currency for internal circulation. Workers were paid in this currency, which could only be spent in the local store that was also owned by their landlord.

tixnuc-1-1

“After living through an age of splendor, a socialist movement evolved in which the haciendas were engaged in complex land disputes, until they were taken over by the government for some years. On top of this, sisal fiber lost its market value due to the mass production of nylon. As a result, haciendas were gradually abandoned and the surrounding Mayan communities were left to fend for themselves after having depended on the property owners for decades.

“In 1990, it was estimated that only 400 haciendas remained, all of them in ruins. The rest had disappeared or had been reduced to barely recognizable structures that could not be salvaged.

“During one of their many trips to the Yucatán in 1990, the Hernandez family started to thinking about what they could do to save the culture and great constructions of these amazing communities, while inviting the world to learn about the natural resources and great knowledge of the Mayans through their surviving descendants and keepers of their cosmology.

beach-villas-4

“Through the restoration and development of several haciendas properties and the creation in 2002 of Haciendas del Mundo Maya Foundation, the company became a pioneer in the area, developing sustainable tourism projects to rescue the abandoned sisal-producing haciendas of the Yucatan Peninsula, along with a clear vision for promoting the economic and social development of the rural Mayan communities.

“Founded in 2008, Catherwood Travels represents the next phase of the family’s involvement in the Maya region: the creation of a team dedicated to combining the enjoyment of travelers with luxury treatment and cultural sensitivity to create unique experiential travel opportunities.”

Las Posadas – San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

One of the prettiest towns in Mexico has its best Christmas tradition. On the nine days leading up to Christmas eve, the streets of this charming colonial city in the center of the country come to live with lively Posada processions. Our Mexico expert Pamela H. Murdock tells us more about this unique custom:

“On the nine nights leading up to Christmas Eve, Las Posadas (inns or shelters), begin with a procession that represents the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. Candle-bearing residents sing Christmas carols as they walk, joined by “Mary” (usually riding a donkey) and “Joseph”. The parade weaves through the streets and participant knock on house doors while singing the traditional Posada Song, “Pidiendo Posada,”(Begging for Shelter). Nevertheless, they’re turned away because there is “no room at the inn.” “After all, sings the household, you might be a rogue.” Eventually, they find an open door. Here, everyone is given food and hot drinks while the children play at piñatas until they break and spill candy everywhere. A good time is truly had by all.”

Complete your enchanting end of year holidays in San Miguel de Allende by staying at the historic Quinta Quebrada. This gorgeous historic home is hidden behind high walls in the heart of town, the perfect base for a family trip to this beautiful destination. Find out more about it through Pamela H. Murdock here.

Santa Arriving ….  By Boat? St Tropez, France

It’s not surprising that glamorous St-Tropez celebrates Christmas with pizzazz and with a particularly original holiday custom, revealed to us by our local expert Anne-Claire. Santa doesn’t arrive at this port town on his usual sleigh… he cruises in by boat!

An eagerly awaiting crowd gathers on the Quai de Suffren at 6 pm on December 24th to welcome Father Christmas. The excitement rises as a large boat approaches the dock, aboard which is the enthusiastic special guest. The decorated boat shoots off fireworks which add to the vibrant scene, the buildings of the port already colorfully lit up for the season.

Once on land, Père Noel hops on a small train to escort the town’s children to Place de la Garonne where he gives out presents and candy… only to those who’ve been nice of course!

Experience the lovely holiday magic of St-Tropez by staying at Villa Glamour by Villas Prestige et Services. Anne-Claire Conraud and her team can also arrange for the villa to be prepared with holiday decorations and can even have “Santa” come straight to the villa on Christmas Eve carrying a bag full of gifts!

Tuscan Traditions at the Borgo Finocchieto – Italy

The festive season is the perfect time to be in Tuscany, celebrated in style at the Borgo Finocchieto. According to Pascale Queriot of the Borgo, the private hamlet provides the ultimate concept of luxury: freedom.

“Guests feel at home with an extremely discreet 5-star luxury service,” details Pascale. “There’s no dress code, no constrictions… they are free to enjoy their day as they want, no need to dress up for lunch and dinner, they can walk barefoot in the grass with a glass of wine, have exactly the meal they are craving prepared by our chef.”

The Borgo is just about to start preparing for the holidays. Christmas traditions in Italy start with decorating homes on December 8th which is the celebration of the Immaculate Conception. Today this includes a Christmas tree, however, in the past this was mainly in the form of presepi (nativity scenes). In fact, in Naples there is a whole street with just presepi!  Once decorated, the Borgo’s staff gradually works towards the special menus for Christmas Eve and Day, as described by Pascale:

“On Christmas Eve no meat is to supposed to be eaten, the meal is meant to be light and include fish only. On the 25th lunch there is a huge substantial lunch shared by the whole family and children open their gifts. Midnight mass on the 24th is very important as well. the streets in Italy are completely empty during Christmas. People go out from their homes on the afternoon of the 25th to take a stroll to help digest!”

Enjoy a true Italian Christmas at the Borgo Finocchieto or share a special moment by gathering friends or family here at another time of year. Learn more about this unique villa complex here.

Catching your own Christmas Dinner – Queenstown, New Zealand

Just because it’s warm and sunny in the southern hemisphere for the holiday season, it doesn’t mean that it’s lacking the festive spirit! Our experts at MajorDomo tell us what Christmas could entail down on the South Island.

“A sunny summer Christmas in New Zealand might see you start (and keep) some new Christmas Traditions which will leave you with long and lasting happy yuletide memories,” starts Fiona Stevens, co-founder and director of MajorDomo.

“Picture yourself waking up on Christmas morning in your luxury villa overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Lake Wakatipu in gorgeous Queenstown. The sun is streaming through the windows early as your in-house chef prepares a fresh and healthy breakfast to fuel you for the adventures to come.  Father Christmas comes to New Zealand first on his travels and is sure to find all the little people in your party and their stockings hung by the fire.

“After breakfast around the table and gathering around the Christmas tree to open presents the adventures begin. Your private helicopter picks you up to soar you over the mountain tops, mountain lakes, glaciers, valleys, lakes and rivers, to a remote and wild West Coast beach where your guide dives for crayfish and paua – decadent and luxurious kiwi treats.

“On your way back to Queenstown, your helicopter will land atop a mountain where your guide will cook your fresh crayfish and paua accompanied by another Christmas tradition whitebait patties. It’d be rude not to pop a bottle of champagne at this point!

“After being dropped back at your villa, why not wander down to the lake to go late afternoon paddle boarding or kayaking to make room for a Christmas dinner feast.  You may wish to have traditional Christmas fare of turkey, ham and goose or perhaps a lighter Pacific fusion style dinner.”

Don’t forget to pack your sunblock on this adventurous and exciting holiday to Zealand. Jump aboard the private helicopter with MajorDomo here.

Klosters, Switzerland

Swiss charm, fabulous skiing and jewelbox chalets, there are many reasons to love this traditional village resort, a favorite of our expert James Palmer-Tomkinson. His love for the exceptional resort has been passed down through the generations and sparked the creation of his luxury skiing holiday company PT Ski.

“In the past it was the resort of choice for Hollywood movie stars and although they have since moved on, the cache of Klosters remains,” explains James. “Visitors now prefer it for its discreet and low key ambiance, a complete contrast to the more flamboyant resorts like St Moritz and Gstaad. There are no designer shops, but its glamourous visitors love it instead for its understated chic.”

In addition to its authenticity, it also has amazing skiing. Combined with Davos, it’s one of the largest ski areas in the whole country. Avid skiers can enjoy perfectly groomed slopes and beginners can gain courage via its excellent ski schools. At the end of an invigorating day on the slopes, settle in for a cozy evening fireside at one of the town’s quaint but luxurious chalets.

Val d'Isère city

Val d’Isère, France

The French Alps have dozens of resorts, but our Alps expert Andy Castle of Ultimate Luxury Chalets adores the Val d’Isère. This former traditional farming village nestled in the Tarentaise Valley close to the Italian border, has become one of the world’s premier ski resorts.

Home to the the Espace Killy ski resort, it also incorporates the neighbouring high altitude station of Tignes, bring together over 300km of pistes, elevating to heights of over 3500m. In addition, the area’s off-piste terrain is both thrilling and easily accessible by some of its 94 ski lifts. New to these this season will be the state-of-the-art Solaise gondola, which will replace the old Solaise Express chairlift.

If your bones aren’t too weary from your physical exertion, discover some of the resort’s superb après ski bars and restaurants. On the whole, these tend to be a much better value for luxury than some of the other high end resorts of the Alps.

The official ski fields are made up of five resorts, two of which, Cardrona and Treble Cone, have teamed up for a joint three or five day flexi lift pass.

Alternatively, let MajorDomo help arrange arrange your heliski experiences, picking you up straight from one of their Wanaka villas with a helipad.

MG Verbier 3

Verbier, Switzerland

Verbier is another wonderfully charming and luxurious resort in the Alps and where Marina Gratsos of Carpe Diem Luxury Travel hits the slopes. Cradled in the southwestern Swiss canton of Valais, it’s considered one of the world’s top “off-piste” resorts.

Verbier sits at 1,500m in a sunny, south-facing valley with spectacular panoramas of the surrounding summits. It’s also the largest and most popular resort of the Four Vallées ski region, connecting with other resorts including Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and La Tzoumaz. The town is filled with impressive luxury chalets. While it’s a better destination for intermediate and advanced grade skiers, it does have some beginner slopes.

Try to book your trip during one of Verbier’s many annual events like the Freeride World Tour, Xtreme Verbier, held at the end of March. The town is filled with impressive luxury chalets and an abundance of evening entertainment and dining. Gastronomes must book in at the restaurant of the Chalet d’Adrien, the town center’s only Michelin Star which offers delicious locally inspired dishes and fabulous views.

Telluride, Colorado, U.S.A.

North America’s Rocky Mountains offer some exceptional skiing surrounded by jaw-dropping views of the snowy mountain tops. Our global expert Sylvia Delvaille Jones of Villas and Apartments Abroad takes us to Colorado’s pretty and refined resort of Telluride. Set in a tree-lined box canyon, this former Victorian mining town has retained this heritage through many buildings and other landmarks of this boom era.

There is a free gondola connecting Telluride to the Mountain Town, the only public transportation system of its kind on the continent.

There are also a range of unique activities off the slopes such as art walks, theater performances and even professional certificate courses. There is a wide variety of dining options from stylish chalets with stunning mountain views to old fashioned saloons. Zermatt, Switzerland

Back in the European Alps, we venture to spectacular Zermatt, a personal favorite of Andy Castle of Ultimate Luxury Chalets. This picturesque and lavish resort is tucked in the upper end of the Mattertal and is encircled by some of the most awe-inspiring peaks in Europe, including the world famous Matterhorn.

“Zermatt has established itself as one of the most popular resorts in the Alps,” describes Andy. “With spectacular scenery, an outstanding snow record, phenomenal skiing, amazing luxury chalets and nightlife to match… it’s a resort that has pretty much everything you could ask for!”

As Zermatt is entirely pedestrianized, with only electric buses and taxis that connect all the main lift stations on the valley floor, it makes for a pleasant, family-friendly resort. Your days on the slopes are complemented by hearty mountain meals, horse-drawn sleigh rides, heavenly spa treatments and cozy nights in front of the fireplace at your luxury chalet overlooking the twinkling lights of town and the Matterhorn.

Big Sky Resort – Montana, U.S.A.

For a more offbeat skiing experience in the U.S., find your way to remote Big Sky Resort, the Basecamp to Yellowstone Park in beautiful Montana. As its name suggests, the incredible blue sky goes on forever, as do the amazing vistas of the Rocky Mountains, something which has attracted our local expert Suzy Hall of Mountain Home to the area.

The resort features cutting edge lifts, impeccably groomed slopes and nowhere near the crowds found on the more popular slopes of the U.S. – all in the shadow of its iconic, Matterhorn-like peak. Plus, there is a vast array of non-skiing activities to please the whole family from zipline tours to dog sledding and from wall climbing to sleigh rides.

On the development front, there are big plans to expand the resort in the coming decade to make it the “American Alp.” Therefore, it’s an up-and-coming resort to add to your list now!

How to convert the comfort and convenience of a luxury hotel into an authentic local experience—this was the challenge our expert Erica Berman took on, and succeeded at beautifully, in the creation of her company Haven in. Her 20+ years in the luxury apartment and villa rental business has lead her to expand from one studio apartment in Paris to dozens of exquisite properties in various European destinations. Erica tells us more about the evolution of Haven in below.

Erica Berman

It all started with a good idea (and, frankly, a good view).

“My parents are the kind of travelers that only stay in 4-star hotels; the kind who want to explore on their own during the day, but return to something luxurious, full service, and familiar at night. Soon after my move to Paris in 1992, they decided it was time for a visit. As Mom and Dad prepped for their stay, I had an idea. They needed to see the city I fell in love with through the eyes of a local. I would convince them to stay in a friend’s newly renovated penthouse apartment that came with a big bonus: a balcony and a killer view of the Eiffel Tower.

Victor Hugo Chic Haven In

“Not only did they agree, but after their apartment stay, they couldn’t stop raving. Though they’d visited Paris before, this was a fresh vision and a new kind of luxury: living like a local in as if they, too, were Parisians, if only for a while.

“That’s when the idea sparked. If my 4-star hotel, comfort-loving parents could enjoy, even prefer, this type of hotel-alternative experience, certainly other travelers would, too. I took a leap, bought a charming studio in Montmartre with a friend, renovated and decorated it, and spread the word that it was available for rent for vacation stays.

“Being the early days, I marketed in magazines, faxed information, and sent printed photos by snail mail. It was old fashioned and slow. There was no website or even email. Things have greatly changed since the early 1990s and that adorable studio is no longer mine, but it was the incentive to start on a new and exciting path.

Today, Haven in has more than 50 boutique rental listings in Paris, Provence, Tuscany, and London. My team is here to help other creative travelers and luxe lovers to have that same authentic experience and their very own home-away-from-home just as my parents did, all those years ago.
