What does it take to have a prosperous and renowned luxury villa rental company? Passion, dedication and the highest levels of customer service are proving to be the winning equation for our New Zealand experts Lisa Hayden and Fiona Stevens of MajorDomo. Their success has recently earned them a prestigious 2016 Deloitte Fast 50 award, impressive recognition of their achievements after only three years in business. Fiona Stevens tells us more about the company’s incarnation and its notable evolution.

“Lisa and I met four years ago and quickly discovered that we shared a passion for not only a glass of Central Otago Pinot Noir, but for the luxury accommodation industry.

“When we met I had been involved in tourism in New Zealand since 1987, and had extensive knowledge of what luxury visitors want and how to deliver superior service. Lisa’s background was as a sharebroker, financial advisor and successful ‘start-up’ business entrepreneur. We were both looking for the next project and soon formed an impressive team combining our experience in tourism and business.

“We saw an opportunity to create a niche in the luxury market after being approached by several Queenstown home owners to manage their villas as accommodation.

dacha-majordomo

“A portfolio of villas then began forming after word of mouth got around Queenstown. The long-term goal was then to become a trusted accommodation provider in the luxury tourism market, offering not only villa stays but boutique hotels, luxury lodges and apartments to create an accessible range of accommodation options for different guests. MajorDomo was then born in 2013.

“It didn’t take long for Lisa and I to add concierge services and inspirational experiences to the MajorDomo product. We understand what it’s like for guests organising travel, accommodation, activities and all the finer details in between – especially when the whole family or a bunch of friends are coming along! We felt that we could take some of the pressure off for our guests by offering them these services and specifically tailoring holidays to their needs. That way visitors could come away from a truly unique experience feeling relaxed, having spent more time with friends and family and with all their expectations and requirements exceeded.

“It’s incredibly important to us that, in everything we do, we intertwine an exemplary level of personal service and professionalism, as well as a dash of fun and friendliness – guests are on holiday, after all! Being approachable enables us to truly listen to our guests and better tailor their accommodation and experiences to them. It’s also more fun for us!

“Lisa and I are so proud that three years into operation, MajorDomo is an award-winning company with repeat guests and an impressive portfolio of select properties in the heart of New Zealand’s stunning landscapes, including historic high country stations, contemporary urban retreats, small and quirky, and grand and architectural.

“From the first point of contact, a complimentary concierge from our small team takes care of our visitors’ every need, streamlining all accommodation and experience bookings before and during their stay. From a backcountry helicopter trip to exclusive wine tasting tour, in-house yoga or personal chef – it’s all possible.

“We believe that our passion and flare remains evident throughout every facet of the business and is helping to drive our continual growth.”

Preview the exceptional quality of MajorDomo’s properties in this feature of their recently added Mahu Whenua, a vast retreat which brings luxury eco-tourism to a whole new level. Let Fiona, Lisa and their team of passionate specialists assist you with planning your perfect holiday to New Zealand by contacting them here.

Klosters, Switzerland

Swiss charm, fabulous skiing and jewelbox chalets, there are many reasons to love this traditional village resort, a favorite of our expert James Palmer-Tomkinson. His love for the exceptional resort has been passed down through the generations and sparked the creation of his luxury skiing holiday company PT Ski.

“In the past it was the resort of choice for Hollywood movie stars and although they have since moved on, the cache of Klosters remains,” explains James. “Visitors now prefer it for its discreet and low key ambiance, a complete contrast to the more flamboyant resorts like St Moritz and Gstaad. There are no designer shops, but its glamourous visitors love it instead for its understated chic.”

In addition to its authenticity, it also has amazing skiing. Combined with Davos, it’s one of the largest ski areas in the whole country. Avid skiers can enjoy perfectly groomed slopes and beginners can gain courage via its excellent ski schools. At the end of an invigorating day on the slopes, settle in for a cozy evening fireside at one of the town’s quaint but luxurious chalets.

Val d'Isère city

Val d’Isère, France

The French Alps have dozens of resorts, but our Alps expert Andy Castle of Ultimate Luxury Chalets adores the Val d’Isère. This former traditional farming village nestled in the Tarentaise Valley close to the Italian border, has become one of the world’s premier ski resorts.

Home to the the Espace Killy ski resort, it also incorporates the neighbouring high altitude station of Tignes, bring together over 300km of pistes, elevating to heights of over 3500m. In addition, the area’s off-piste terrain is both thrilling and easily accessible by some of its 94 ski lifts. New to these this season will be the state-of-the-art Solaise gondola, which will replace the old Solaise Express chairlift.

If your bones aren’t too weary from your physical exertion, discover some of the resort’s superb après ski bars and restaurants. On the whole, these tend to be a much better value for luxury than some of the other high end resorts of the Alps.

Wanaka, New Zealand

Situated almost in the centre of New Zealand’s South Island, Wanaka offers some of the country’s best skiing and snowboarding. It’s no wonder our experts at MajorDomo like to strap on their boots on at this incredibly stunning location. The lakeside town, abuzz with life, restaurants, bars and boutiques, acts as the gateway to the Southern Alps and gorgeous Mt Aspiring National Park.

“Wanaka is fabulous place to base your family and friends for the ultimate New Zealand extreme ski experience,’ says Lisa Hayden, co-owner of MajorDomo. “In fact it’s the largest heli-skiing area outside North America.”

In addition to being a heliski destination, it has uncrowded slopes, amazing off-piste terrain, the country’s only cross-country ski area and plenty of other activities like snowshoeing, sledding and dog sled tours. The official ski fields are made up of five resorts, two of which, Cardrona and Treble Cone, have teamed up for a joint three or five day flexi lift pass.

Alternatively, let MajorDomo help arrange arrange your heliski experiences, picking you up straight from one of their Wanaka villas with a helipad.

MG Verbier 3

Verbier, Switzerland

Verbier is another wonderfully charming and luxurious resort in the Alps and where Marina Gratsos of Carpe Diem Luxury Travel hits the slopes. Cradled in the southwestern Swiss canton of Valais, it’s considered one of the world’s top “off-piste” resorts.

Verbier sits at 1,500m in a sunny, south-facing valley with spectacular panoramas of the surrounding summits. It’s also the largest and most popular resort of the Four Vallées ski region, connecting with other resorts including Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and La Tzoumaz. The town is filled with impressive luxury chalets. While it’s a better destination for intermediate and advanced grade skiers, it does have some beginner slopes.

Try to book your trip during one of Verbier’s many annual events like the Freeride World Tour, Xtreme Verbier, held at the end of March. The town is filled with impressive luxury chalets and an abundance of evening entertainment and dining. Gastronomes must book in at the restaurant of the Chalet d’Adrien, the town center’s only Michelin Star which offers delicious locally inspired dishes and fabulous views.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Back in the European Alps, we venture to spectacular Zermatt, a personal favorite of Andy Castle of Ultimate Luxury Chalets. This picturesque and lavish resort is tucked in the upper end of the Mattertal and is encircled by some of the most awe-inspiring peaks in Europe, including the world famous Matterhorn.

“Zermatt has established itself as one of the most popular resorts in the Alps,” describes Andy. “With spectacular scenery, an outstanding snow record, phenomenal skiing, amazing luxury chalets and nightlife to match… it’s a resort that has pretty much everything you could ask for!”

As Zermatt is entirely pedestrianized, with only electric buses and taxis that connect all the main lift stations on the valley floor, it makes for a pleasant, family-friendly resort. Your days on the slopes are complemented by hearty mountain meals, horse-drawn sleigh rides, heavenly spa treatments and cozy nights in front of the fireplace at your luxury chalet overlooking the twinkling lights of town and the Matterhorn.

Big Sky Resort – Montana, U.S.A.

For a more offbeat skiing experience in the U.S., find your way to remote Big Sky Resort, the Basecamp to Yellowstone Park in beautiful Montana. As its name suggests, the incredible blue sky goes on forever, as do the amazing vistas of the Rocky Mountains, something which has attracted our local expert Suzy Hall of Mountain Home to the area.

The resort features cutting edge lifts, impeccably groomed slopes and nowhere near the crowds found on the more popular slopes of the U.S. – all in the shadow of its iconic, Matterhorn-like peak. Plus, there is a vast array of non-skiing activities to please the whole family from zipline tours to dog sledding and from wall climbing to sleigh rides.

On the development front, there are big plans to expand the resort in the coming decade to make it the “American Alp.” Therefore, it’s an up-and-coming resort to add to your list now!

For some, the end of the year holidays are a time for gathering family and friends next to a twinkling Christmas tree or toasty fireplace. For others, it’s a time to soak up some sunshine while recharging your batteries next to a gorgeous pool or on a pristine beach. We please the latter in this first roundup of our favorite places for the holidays as we crisscross the globe from New Zealand to Costa Rica and from Uruguay to Thailand in search of the ultimate sunny villas to ring in the season.

Quinta Quebrada – San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

If you’re looking for a sunny destination in the Americas which also exudes unique holiday spirit, consider venturing to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Nestled in the mountains in the center of the country, according to our Mexico expert Pamela H. Murdock, this charming colonial city is a magical place to spend the holidays. Pamela has holidayed at the captivating historic home Quinta Quebrada during this time of year and she shares this enchanting experience below:

“There are lights everywhere as well as nativity scenes, parades, pop-up fireworks (don’t get too close!) and the famous Las Posadas. Taking place the nine nights leading up to Christmas Eve, Las Posadas (inns or shelters), start with a procession that represents the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. People holding candles sing Christmas carols as they walk and are joined by “Mary” (usually riding a donkey) and “Joseph”. The parade meanders through streets and knocks on house doors while singing the traditional Posada Song, “Pidiendo Posada,”(Begging for Shelter). However, they’re turned away because there is “no room at the inn.” “After all, sings the household, you might be a rogue.” Finally they find an open door and everyone is given food and hot drinks while the children have at piñatas until they break and spill candy everywhere. A good time is truly had by all.

“New Year’s Eve in San Miguel takes merriment to a whole new level! Though the main celebration takes place in the Jardín, the principal plaza, the whole town becomes a fiesta. Everyone comes out for the mariachi bands, giant sparklers, food vendors, gigantes (people dressed as giant puppets) and dancing which can go on till all hours. Then at midnight a huge fireworks display lights up the sky above the Parroquia (a lovely church beside the Jardín). Throughout the evening, people also set off their own fireworks which can be a little too exciting for some with rockets whizzing everywhere. It’s an incredible sight and great fun. If you’re not up for the street scene, make a reservation well in advance at La Posadita or La Azotea or at one of the hotels with a rooftop bar/restaurant like Rosewood or El Palomar. The view of the fireworks will be wonderful. San Miguel seems to celebrate more holidays than any other in Mexico and New Year’s Eve is the ultimate.

“Since the holidays are all about family and friends, why not bring a group and rent the most famous house in town? Quinta Quebrada is a magnificent and magical 16th century casa with 11 bedrooms and a wonderful large staff. Hidden behind tall walls which enclose almost one acre of gorgeous grounds, you’ll find courtyards, follies, gardens full of climbing roses and cascading bougainvillea, multiple terraces and loggias, a pool and a hot tub. I’ve stayed there often and each time is still a treat!”

Take in this amazing experience for yourself by contacting Pamela at this link.

Casa El Cuyo – Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

In the Yucatan, it’s summer all year long, so sunseekers can’t go wrong by traveling to this lovely part of Mexico over the holidays. Our Yucatan experts at Catherwood Travels suggest escaping the tourists masses, which crowd some areas of the coast, by holidaying in El Cuyo, a white-sand paradise that the modern world seems to have bypassed.

“Located between the Ria Lagartos and Holbox Natural Reserves, El Cuyo is miles of virgin beaches and an up-and-coming kite-surfing destination,” details Angelica Espinosa of Catherwood. “Watch the sky turn pink as you cycle through the flocks of pink flamingoes or dive into the surrounding marshlands on horseback. Leave your mobile phone at home – without any signal, the office, and all your problems never intrude as you enjoy the superb fresh seafood.“

Catherwoods has a fabulous, meticulously restored colonial house: the Casa El Cuyo. It’s situated in the beachside town of El Cuyo, where you can immerse yourself in local customs and natural beauty. The traditional building elements are cleverly contrasted by a chic contemporary décor. The house is completely air conditioned and the common areas include living and dining room, a bar and kitchen. There is one master bedroom on the upper floor and two additional bedrooms on the ground floor, all with en-suite bathrooms. The central patio is an ideal location for breakfast, relaxing in the shade or a holiday celebration.

It’s the perfect place to recharge for the new year. Plus, it’s virtually impossible to not fall in love with the unfettered life in the land that time forgot.

Plan your perfect vacation to the Yucatan with Catherwood Travels.

Marlborough Sounds – Bay of Many Coves

“One of our very favourite things about New Zealand is that we have such a vast range of natural contrasts, yet none of these amazing places is too far so it’s easy to sneak away to enjoy the beauty and drama of our special special scenery,” explains Fiona Stevens, co-founder and director of MajorDomo.

“For example, just at the top of the South Island are the stunning Marlborough Sounds. If you go a little off the beaten track you will truly unwind and immerse yourself in this area with its collection of ancient sunken river valleys filled with the vibrant blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Beautiful and rich forested hills rising steeply from the sea around an intricate coastline of sheltered inlets and golden sandy bays.

“There is no shortage of things to do and see including hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, yachting and boating, fishing, enjoying the antics of the dolphins. And when you are done exploring, sit back and enjoy a glass of wine on your deck overlooking a view like no other.”

Abel Tasman Touch of Spice

Abel Tasman National Park – Nelson

You can discover some New Zealand’s most stunning coastal scenery at the Abel Tasman National Park, recommended by Jacqui Spice, founder and CEO of Touch of Spice. The park is situated between Golden Bay and Tasman Bay at the north end of the South Island, approximately 65 kms northwest of Nelson.

“There is a variety of walking tracks of varying durations which allow you to take in the natural splendor of the park, but the most popular is the Abel Tasman Coastal Track,” reveals Jacqui. “It has plenty of crystal blue swimming spots, golden sand beaches to lunch on and lush native bush to hike through. Along your way, be sure to track down Cleopatra’s natural rock pool with its moss-lined waterslide and the 47m suspension bridge where you can admire the inlet to Falls River.

“While you can go any time of year due to the area’s mild climate, in summer (November to March) you can make the most of longer daylight hours in addition to cooling off in the water or trying out some of the watersports that are available like sea-kayaking which offers another vantage point for admiring the beautiful scenery.”

Ben Lomond Summit – Queenstown

Set on Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by towering mountain peaks, Queenstown features some of New Zealand’s most phenomenal scenery. A wonderful advantage of the small city is that many explorations of the area’s beautiful nature can commence right from your doorstep, like on a hike up to the Ben Lomond Summit, a favorite of Jacqui Spice of Touch of Spice.

“Visitors can reach its height of 1,748m without any technical knowledge, unless of course it’s in snow,” says Jacqui. “If you’re keen to save about an hours’ worth of hiking through the forest, you can take the Skyline Gondola up through the Ben Lomond Forest for about $15.

“From the summit you’ll be struck by the constantly changing views, providing you with an immense sense of accomplishment after your physical efforts. You’ll see Cecil and Walter Peak, the Remarkables, Moke Lake, Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown from spectacular angles.

“Ben Lomond Summit can be hiked at any time of the year, but we would recommend the summer months as this will give you more daylight hours, warmer weather and better views as the sky is generally clearer.

“Be sure to have a good night’s rest the day before since it is a full day, uphill hike. Take plenty of water as there are no fresh water sources along the way as well as a packed lunch and sunscreen, as even on grey days, New Zealand’s thin Ozone layer can allow the sun to burn you.”

Mount Aspiring National Park

Mount Aspiring National Park was a very large huge playground to MajorDomo Director Fiona Stevens when she was a very little girl and it is such a treat for her to still be able to ‘play’ there as a grown up and introduce this majestical and magical area to their guests.

“Mount Aspiring itself is the magnificent 3,027m centerpiece of a spectacle that sparkles with glaciers, thunders with waterfalls, glistens with braided rivers and beckons with hectares of lush native beech,” illustrates Fiona vividly.

“It has such wide open spaces yet is surrounded by soaring mountains which roll down to to tranquil river flats – it just makes exploring Mount Aspiring National Park’s wilderness an unforgettable experience. Climb, tramp, ski or just take in the spectacle… it’s your choice. On long hot summer days – challenge yourself to a jump in a waterhole filled by a cascading waterfall. You will not be in the water for long!

“Whether you choose a seat in a helicopter or on a jetboat, a stout stick and walking boots or a set of crampons, you’ll find that Mount Aspiring National Park is the sort of place they invented the words ‘immerse and experience’ for.”

Emerald Lakes Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Tongariro Alpine Crossing – Taupo

Very few places around the world evoke another planet like the incredibly unique volcanic landscape of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, located near Lake Taupo in the center of the North Island. You’ll get the chance to experience different terrains as you walk along boardwalks or loose rocks on your way to amazing photo opportunities at the Emerald Lakes. Jacqui Spice of Touch of Spice tells us more:

“From the base of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, straight away you will figure out that you are visiting a multi-cratered volcano,” describes Jacqui. “Once at the top, after a bit of rock climbing to keep it interesting, you’re presented with the amazing Emerald Lakes that you would only think possible in a sci-fi movie and must be seen with your own eyes to know that they truly exist.

“If you’re after an extra challenge, detour up Mount Ngauruhoe for more vast and spectacular view. Don’t forget to take enough water as there is no guarantee of a fresh water supply and since the weather can have dramatic changes, make sure you take layers that can be easily removed and reapply your sunscreen regularly.”

Whitsunday Estate – Australia

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef features some of the region’s most stunning beaches and our global expert Sylvia Delvaille Jones of Villas and Apartments Abroad has the perfect place to stay to make the most of this fabulous coastline.

“This “Thatched Palace” boasts six South-Sea style thatched luxury cottages in full view of the aqua marine Pacific Ocean and a necklace of white sandy beaches and reefs to explore – exclusively yours,” details Sylvia. “Each of the six cottages or a total of seven suites, has its own style and feel and include artwork from around the world; an antique Russian chest, tiles from palaces in India, cool limestone floors, uniquely handcrafted African, Balinese and Mexican art including wall hangings/lighting and carvings.

“The main Pavilion with its gabled roof, is the focal point of this magical place where guests can gather, especially in the evenings to recap the day’s events. It boasts broad verandahs with day beds and lounges, a living room with special lighting effects, a siesta bedroom, the chef’s kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining areas and entertainment facilities.

“The main house takes in the impressive views of the lake, the sea, the pool and gardens. Enjoy activities like water skiing, fishing or bathing in your own private lake or just laze around your own oversized pool, pamper yourself with a massage on the wooden candle lit deck overlooking the purple lily pond, or practise some yoga with a private instructor in the meditation tower. Explore on your mountain bikes or quad bikes through the miles and miles of bushland trails.

“Escape on a river safari or discover a rock pool where you could spread your picnic lunch of cold “catch of the day” seafood salad and some crisp Aussie wine. Take a bushwalk deep into the rainforest to discover a hidden waterfall and a remote beach. Or arrange for a day of Game fishing, a seaplane launch reef trip, jet skiing, paragliding and scuba diving, tandem parachuting and windsurfing.

“For a special evening, enjoy some live entertainment at a beachside barbecue. If you are traveling with children, arrange for the circus to “come to town” to entertain them. But for sure, the friendly kanga will make her house-call each morning to say G’day.”
