The Pavillon des Vosges, by Carpe Diem Luxury Travel, offers the comfort, relaxation, quiet and privacy of being in your own private Parisian home while being in one of the most coveted and trendiest areas of the city.

“The romantic tone is set as you open the door with its hand-carved heart. Cross the discrete gravel courtyard, scale the vast limestone hand carved stairwell and push open the double doors, you are invited into a very different, highly intimate paris, providing the luxury of being ‘in residence,’ in a famously secret city,” describes Marina Gratsos, director of Carpe Diem Luxury Travel.

Located in the gorgeous Place des Vosges, this 17th-century three-bedroom apartment is on the étage noble of a deeply historic hotel particulier. The apartment was the home of Marie Touchet, the sole mistress and grand courtesan to Charles IV and mother of his only living heir and a daughter, Catherine Henriette, (in turn mistress to Henri IV), so its walls are steeped in history and romantic intrigue.

With tall wooden beam ceilings, the apartment perfectly combines classic elegance with modern luxuries. There are two beautifully appointed formal salons for entertaining, a library for cosy relaxation, a pretty sunlit kitchen for breakfasts and casual dining and three private bedrooms suites that can sleep up to six people. Of exceptional note is the Master Bedroom, la “Chambre de Madame,” which has one of the most beautiful views in all Paris over the trees and vaulted rooftops of the Place des Vosges. It has a king-size bed, dressing-room and a sumptuous en-suite marble bathroom with bath, shower and WC.

Peacefully Wander the Medina

Getting lost in the Medina is a must on any trip to Marrakech, plus winter provides the added advantage of fewer crowds. You can slow your pace, enjoy area’s historic sites without hoards of other visitors, gaze up at the sun-kissed rooftops and savor the rich play of colors of the traditionally built clay houses which give the “Red City” its nickname. For a cultural break, stop in at the Bahia Palace, a sprawling complex built for the Grand Vizier of Marrakech at the end of the 19th century. With the aim of creating the greatest palace of its time, it showcases the best of Moroccan craftsmanship and design. Being able to capture its courtyards and intimate rooms tourist free is a real treat.

Shop at the Silent Souk

The souk of Marrakech can sometimes feel a little overbearing with shouting vendors, the shove of the crowds and over abundance of stands to choose from. The experience is much more relaxed in winter. Since there are fewer customers, its laneways are easier to navigate, vendors are happier to have potential clients and can also take the time for a real discussion with clients instead of going straight for the hard sell. If you go in early-mid December, it’s also the occasion to pick up some original holiday gifts and at a bargain.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Over in the hills of central Mexico, regional expert Pamela Murdock tempts travelers to the charming colonial city of San Miguel de Allende, where the enchanting Quinta Quebrada historic home she represents is located.

“November in San Miguel is a wonderful and really fun time of year to be in this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage town,” describes Pamela. “The weather is lovely (with temperatures ranging from about 80° down to 50°), plus there are fewer tourists and less traffic. In addition to great restaurants, shops and places to see, there are also several holidays taking place in November.”

“The highlight of these takes place across the country on November 1st and 2nd, two days dedicated to remembering deceased family members. The 1st is Todos los Santos (All Saints Day) and the 2nd is the famous Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) when many spend the entire night in the cemetery eating, drinking and welcoming the dead back from their resting place. It’s a fascinating event to experience firsthand, however, if you’re not ready for possibly long lines to get through the cemetery gates, the celebrations take place around the whole town is part which is cast in masses of marigolds. They say the bright flowers help the souls find their way home. Fiesta flags are strung across the Jardín, the main plaza, and adorn most of the shrines.

“Instead of just welcoming the dead at midnight November 1st in the cemetery, San Miguel throws the weeklong Calaca (skull) Festival which features several parades, all-night celebrations and fireworks, among other things. Everywhere you look are people with elaborate face make-up dressed up as ‘muertes’ (dead brides and grooms, banditos, etc.). Think of it as a much much smaller version of the marvelous opening scene in the James Bond movie, Spectre, which was filmed in Mexico City’s grand Zócalo Plaza.”

Live this experience to the fullest by staying at Quinta Quebrada, the most exceptional and intriguing house in San Miguel de Allende. The magical 16th-century house, is hidden from the town by tall walls which enclose almost one acre of gorgeous grounds where you’ll find courtyards, follies, gardens full of climbing roses and cascading bougainvillea, multiple terraces, loggias, a pool and a hot tub.

The interior is like a living museum, decorated with period Mexican furniture and art with 17th and 18th-century furnishings and decorations from faraway destinations like India, Italy, and Spain. It has with 11 bedrooms and a total of 13,864 square feet of living space over three floors. The property offers the utmost privacy, yet it is only a short walk from El Jardín, the main plaza of the picturesque old city.

If you miss the celebrations of All Saints Day and the Day of the Dead, you could also plan your trip around one of these other November events:

  • November 16-20: The International Jazz and Blues Festival
  • Last two weeks of November: Feria Nacional de la Lana y Latón (National Wool & Brass Fair)
  • November 20-21: The celebration of the anniversary of the 1910 Revolution
  • November 21: The Feast Day of Santa Cecilia. Since she’s the patron saint of musicians, people gather at midnight in front of the Oratorio church for an all-night serenade to the Virgin.
  • Thanksgiving: Though it’s obviously not celebrated in Mexico, some restaurants serve a “traditional” meal or go more local and have turkey with mole sauce!

Just some of the local insight you can have by booking your trip to San Miguel de Allende and staying at Quinta Quebrada with Pamela Murdock Inc. Contact her here.

Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica

Further down from Mexico, November is also a fabulous month to visit Costa Rica’s Peninsula Papagayo. Our local expert Jane Moore of Papagayo Luxury entices us to this gorgeous area on the country’s Pacific coast:

“The rains have left, and the tropical dry forest is lush and green,” details Jane. “It is a ‘fringe’ season, so there are fewer crowds all the way up until the festive period starts in mid-December. Plus, the rates are low during November. In fact, Papagayo Luxury is offering the 7th night free at any of their condos, from now through Dec 14 (including Thanksgiving!).”

A perfect multi-generational family holiday can be had at their Villa Belvedere which is mostly located on one level (it has two steps down to living room, and the second master is on the second floor). This home has two identically sized master suites (stacked), so it also works well for two families traveling together. It also has two private pools and a hot tub. The smaller pool has large shallow area, ideal for small children. It features a double queen room, so a group of for children can sleep together in one room. In addition, there is a separate entertainment room with Apple TV, which can be closed off for movie night.

Scotland, the United Kingdom

Take in the last of the fall colors on leisurely country strolls while holidaying in November in Scotland. The best place to enjoy the season or enjoy an exceptional family holiday around American Thanksgiving is at the spectacular The Glenapp Castle by our UK experts Loyd & Townsend Rose

“The night skies in November are amazing,” reports Andrew Loyd, co-director of Loyd & Townsend Rose, who’s been spending quite a lot of time at Glenapp already this autumn. “There’s no light pollution and meteor showers galore. It’s a great time of year for windswept walks, roaring log fires and a wee dram.”

Situated not far from the coast in the southwest of the country, this vast 19th-century castle was built for the Earl of Inchcape and has been opened to guests since 2000. As you approach, you’ll immediately be struck by its stunning exterior and once inside, you’ll marvel at the Victorian splendour exuded through the beautifully decorated interiors.

Each of the castles 17 guest rooms has been individually and luxuriously styled with a unique combination of fabrics, furnishings, antiques and art and include open fires, which will be just being lit in November. There are a variety of suites with magnificent views over woodland and the surrounding sea, a perfect retreat after outdoor adventures or a gourmet dinner at their award-winning restaurant.

The 36-acre grounds are completely secluded and private, for the exclusive use of the castle guests. They encompass an Italian Garden designed by 19th-century world famous garden architect Gertrude Jekyll. You can spend hours meandering their laneways and savoring the changing leaves and crisp autumn air.

Make the most of the last days of fall in Scotland at the gorgeous Glenapp through experts Loyd & Townsend Rose at this link.

Myanmar

It can be very challenging to travel to Myanmar when it’s too hot or during rainy season, however, from October the rains begin to subside, making the month of November an excellent time to visit. In November visitors can also beat some of the crowds around Christmas time and the New Year. This month you you can also experience the Shwezigon Pagoda festival in Bagan, held from the 13th to the 18th. Over these five days the compound converts into a vibrant marketplace when pilgrims and villagers from near and far come to pay homage to Buddha whose relics are enshrined in the Pagoda.

An amazing way to experience this festival as well as the various facets of Myanmar is on a private cruise with Amara River. They have a small fleet of beautiful traditional teak river boats which can hold up to 10 or 14 passengers and are available for private charter. These traditional wooden boats were custom built for Amara and feature modern luxury amenities in their bedroom cabins as well as on their relaxing upper deck from where you can observe the gorgeous sites you float by on the Irrawaddy River.

Since the cruises are private you can design your desired route with the help of their local expertise. A six-day cruise could start in the centuries-old city of Mandalay, journey past the amazing heritage sites of Bagan, past typical Burmese villages, stop in at the capital city of Yangon before ending at the Indian Ocean in the Gulf of Martaban.

Where to stay in Marrakech

If you’re looking for the best place to stay and keep cool in Marrakech, our Morocco experts at Villanovo, Kensington Morocco and cazenove+loyd have a fabulous range of luxury villas in and around the city.

Considered the shoulder season in many destinations around the world, the month of May can be a traveler’s delight. Fewer tourists and great deals, the cusp of the rainy season or the joys of spring, it’s still not too late to enjoy our favorite places to visit in May.

Glenapp Castle Scotland

Scotland

May is an excellent time to holiday to Scotland, the days are almost at their longest, wildflowers and rhododendrons are popping out in the countryside, plus statistically you have the best chance of the whole year of getting dry weather.

“The Glenapp Castle is a great place to go in spring,” highlights Andrew Loyd, one of our UK experts of Loyd & Townsend Rose. “It’s truly ideal for garden lovers.”

The impressive 19th-century castle, built for the Earl of Inchcape, is located close to the coast in the southwest of the country. Opened to guests since 2000, its 17 rooms, sophisticated drawing room and library evoke the utmost of Victorian splendour. Outside, the elegance is carried over in its historic Italian gardens and 36 acre private grounds.

Garden aficionados should roam beyond the castle walls to several noteworthy gardens in the vicinity. Andrew recommends exploring the clifftop Culzean Castle and its gorgeous 600 acres of park and woods where you can seek out the spring blossoms along the marked paths through meadows, forests and around secluded ponds. There’s also Castle Kennedy Gardens, an important historic garden as well as the famous Logan Botanic Garden, considered the country’s most exotic garden.

Whereas over at our other UK expert, Warren de Long of Blandings, recommends going to the coast of Fife, where they have some fabulous properties to base yourself for exploring the area.

“So much of the press for Scotland is about the Highlands and the Western Isles – but I think this part of Scotland is every bit as beautiful and full of charm.

“The obvious place to start, of course, is St Andrews, it’s historic university and the world-class golf should be enough to tempt anyone, but to my mind there is so much more. There is a glorious coastal path that is best between St Monans and Crail—beautiful coastline and great villages, as well as excellent fish & chips in the villages near Anstruther. If you are a bit more adventurous, there is the Elie Chain Walk (between Elie & Leven) where there is a bracing, otter-spotting trail over the cliffs where you can do a 2-to-3 hour scramble. It’s challenging but not as scary as it sounds!

“For those who would rather sit than walk, it is worth going to the nearby coastal village of Elie where The Ship Inn not only has great food, but also hosts beach cricket (only when it is low tide!) starting in May and going on throughout the Summer. Pittenweem is another great spot on the beautiful East Neuk coastline, and in August each year they host the Pittenweem Arts Festival—which is great fun for families, and growing in popularity each year. Nature-lovers have plenty to see too, as there are regular ferries from Anstruther to the Isle of May which is known for its puffins, seals, porpoise, dolphin and even the occasional whale!”

To experience some of this yourselves and make the most of springtime in Scotland, you can reach out to these UK experts at Loyd & Townsend Rose and Blandings at this link.

House On A Dune Pamela Murdock

Bahamas

“May is one of my favorite months to be in the Bahamas, in particular Harbour Island,” says our our Bahamas expert Pamela Murdock. “The air temperature ranges from about 70 – 85 degrees and the water is about 80 degrees. It’s simply perfect. Though it’s the beginning of the rainy season, the weather is generally beautiful. While this idyllic small island remains a wildly popular destination year round, by May the sun worshippers have been joined by those who love fishing and diving.”

We are in luck because Pamela was just on Harbour Island a week ago scouting out some new luxury properties to add to her already extensive portfolio and gave us these insider tips:

“Of course I made time to do some of my favorite things like snorkeling with Jeff of Ocean Fox and shopping for chic clothes at the Blue Rooster and just around the corner at the island’s newest store, Drake. We also had an fantastic lunch at Ocean Talley. Once a best-kept secret, this little jewel is getting more and more popular so definitely make a reservation, especially on weekends,” advises Pamela wisely. “It’s located in a lighthouse on Whale Point, Eleuthera which is about a 10-minute boat trip from Harbour Island. Definitely try their Tequila Shrimp as a first course – It’s so good you may want to have it for your main as well! It really is the perfect way to spend a Bahamian afternoon.”

We couldn’t agree more! A big thank you to Pamela for sharing this valuable local insight. You can learn more about Pamela’s offerings on beautiful Harbour Island at here.

PapagayoLuxury_WEB_026

Costa Rica

One of our Costa Rica experts, Jane Moore of Papagayo, confirmed that May is a wonderful time to visit the country. Her luxury villas are located in the most upscale area of Costa Rica, home to the Four Seasons and an Arnold Palmer Golf Course. However, the area is still not overly developed so it feels very private.

“May is the beginning of the green season,” explains Jane. “We’re located in a tropical dry forest so when it rains, even just a little, everything becomes greener. Plus temperatures have started  cooling down from April’s extreme heat. In addition, since it’s the fringe season, just after spring break and before summer school holidays, it’s a good time to visit for couples. It’s like you have the place all to yourself.”

It’s also perfect timing because Papagayo has a fantastic last minute deal of up to 50% savings on certain villas for stays through June 01, 2016. Jane has sweetened the deal even further by running a flash sale which extends this deal for rental up to Nov 1 for bookings made by April 30, 2016.
