A design masterpiece by Olson Kundig – the celebrated West Coast architects behind some of America’s most beautiful private houses and iconic public buildings – is light filled with light and carefully curated artworks, many from leading LA galleries.
Within a 20-minute stroll along the sand is a choice of acclaimed restaurants including Nobu, Malibu Farm or Little Beach House. Or hike / cycle into the rugged coastal peaks, with elegy-inducing views of the southern Californian coast – all within an easy hit of LA’s galleries, museums and nightlife.
With five bedrooms accommodating up to ten guests, exceptional features include the internal cactus-filled courtyard surrounded by spacious ground-floor living areas and kitchen. Upstairs’ bedrooms come with fabulous bathrooms – the main bedroom has two, alongside a private terrace with its own al fresco fireplace.
There’s also a gym, book-lined office, cinema room and wraparound deck with direct access to Carbon Beach and daily housekeeping is included.

Location
22008 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu is 28 miles west of Los Angeles. Car and helicopter transfers can be arranged from LA International Airport.
Central to the house’s brilliant design, its glass walls can be fully opened to connect different sections of the interiors depending on your mood or practical requirements.

Living Spaces
A huge raw concrete fireplace with wood stack divides the living rooms two areas. Retractable floor-to-ceiling windows (with automated black steel sun shades) offer extraordinary views and a wash of Pacific light… and the internal Zen cactus garden has sun loungers, rocks and rustic stone pots. The cinema room features a 100” television and cosy ‘melt-into’ cloud sofa and in the games room there is a handmade wooden ping pong table by Californian craftsman Sean Woolsey. Gut Check 2022 is a typically explosive, pulsating and colourful abstract oil painting by LA artist Lauren Quin. The book-lined office space has a custom-made concrete and steel desk, Eames office chairs and Ravenhill Pivot chandelier and featuring “Tondo “by contemporary artist and dancer Nick Cave, a mixed media work inspired by his stage costumes.
Kitchen & Dining
The stylish kitchen features a concrete countertop and backsplash, black wooden units and industrial-style concrete cabinet on a metal rail, Gaggenau appliances, Boffi faucet and original vintage 1960s Pierre Jeanneret bar stools.
Other Spaces
The entrance leads to a towering second orange metal door and signature Olson Kundig staircase, juxtaposing steel, glass panels and leather-wrapped steps with the concrete wall. May 1977 by New York-based artist Mickalene Thomas uses rhinestones, glitter, acrylic and oil paints to create a 21st-century vision of female sexuality and power. The gym contains Peloton, treadmill and rowing machines. Art includes Beach Dancers 2016-2022 by Trinidadian artist Che Lovelace, a luscious Cubist-inspired depiction of his home island. One of two powder rooms features a seven-metre-high ceiling clad in Shou Sugi Ban charred timber.
