House On A Dune – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

As tiny as Harbour Island is, it’s huge for the amount of fun to be had surrounding New Year’s Eve and the perfect stylish base on the island is the sleek House on a Dune villa which is still available through Pamela H. Murdock from December 26th to January 2nd.

“Between beach parties, fireworks and the annual Junkanoo (a parade with costumes, music and dancing), this Bahamian island has become so popular that houses are booked months and months in advance,” explains Pamela. “By now trying to find an available house is near impossible unless there’s been a cancellation… and there has been this one.”

The five bedroom House on a Dune is an ultra contemporary and very cool house right on the island’s famous pale pink sand beach. This remarkable property is hidden from the road amidst 1.5 acres of tropical vegetation and sitting atop a 35’ dune.

The contemporary villa was designed by an award winning architect who sought to create a structure that was “simultaneously powerful, yet comfortable; primitive, yet innovative; casual, yet elegant; raw, yet refined.” There is seamless indoor and outdoor living from its living and dining areas which open onto verandas protected from the elements by the deep overhangs of the gabled roof and retractable glass walls. Steps from the house, guests can take a short path down to the stunning pink sand beach.

Inside you can also find a dining area with a table for up to 12, beyond which is the kitchen, which can be closed off by recycled cedar doors. The five bedrooms all have are ensuite baths, that of the master bedroom has a freestanding tub and shower.

Cirio de Nazare, Belem, Brazil

On the second Sunday in October Belem explodes in color and music as two million people descend on the beautiful and historic Amazonian city for its annual 15-day Cirio de Nazare festival. Commencing this year on October 8th, it’s the largest religious event in Brazil and includes a lively lineup of parades, cultural activities, and amusement parks to honor the Virgin Mary of Nazareth. The main event involves a statue of Our Lady of Nazareth, which is thought to have performed miracles when it was found by a farmer from Belem, Placido Jose de Souza. As the miracle goes, the statue would “return” on its own accord to its home in Icoraraci. Today the statue makes the journey from the Catedral da Se in Bellem to the basilica in Icoaraci with the help of hundreds of colourful decorated boats, filled with thousands of singing, dancing attendees. Visitors to this unique festival can make the most of their trip by staying on to explore the beauty of the Amazon.

The unique property is a seven-minute boat ride from the Bocas International Airport, a 40-minute flight from Panama City. The villa is built on 135 stilts and is connected to a 15 hectares island by a 130 meter dock.

She found the right combination in Las Bocas del Toro,” details Sylvia Delvaille Jones of Villas and Apartments Abroad, who arranges holidays at the villa.
