Zermatt

At an altitude from 1,620m to 3,899m, Zermatt has Europe’s highest ski lifts and its largest glacier ski area, making it a complete year round resort. You’re virtually guaranteed to have snow here, especially due to the resort’s efficient snowmaking system which can make up the difference from any natural lack of powder. Zermatt is also a good destination for all levels of skiers so beginnings and advanced skiers can both happily zoom down the slopes and enjoy the balmy spring weather.

Where to Stay in Zermatt: Chalet Zermatt Peak

The perfect place to make the most a late season ski trip here is at the award winning five-bedroom Zermatt Peak by Ultimate Luxury Chalets. Conceived using the highest quality natural materials and workmanship, it perfect fits into the surrounding landscape and village, made all the more impressive by the 4.5-meter floor to ceiling windows in the lounge.

As soon as you enter the chalet, via its private lift access and tunnel, you will be struck by its designer interiors which include unique fixtures and fittings sourced from all over the world. The result is luxurious, stylish and extremely comfortable.
After a long day on the slopes gather next to the real-wood open fireplace or relax in the sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, or over a massage. There’s also a fully-equipped gym, B&O cinema TV screens in the lounge, a library and your own personal chef on hand to whip up your favorite international dishes.

Klosters

The picture-postcard Swiss resort of Klosters is a great bet for late season skiing since more than 80% of the ski area is above 2000m and a majority of its slopes are north facing. In addition, the resort is well-equipped with snow cannons to ensure coverage even late into the season. It’s a great option for families due to the fantastic kids week programs organized by our Klosters’ experts at PT Ski which run the two weeks of the Easter holidays.

They have specially designed programs catering to all ages, from the under fives in the “Pandas” course to older teenagers getting used to off piste in the “All Mountain” course. Their instructors are from the local ski school and they have family friendly PT Ski reps overseeing the “pastoral” side who make sure that all courses run smoothly. They believe that kids learn best when they are having fun, proven true by the huge smiles on the children’s faces. In addition to the ski program, their beautiful Casa Chimera chalet (see below) is also still available… but it could go quickly!

Where to Stay in Klosters: Casa Chimera

Built in 2005, this luxurious family home is a short distance from the lifts and the center of the Klosters village. The chalet has a spacious yet cozy feel and exudes plenty of Alpine charm.

St Moritz

The ritzy resort of St Moritz attracts both avid skiers and those looking to show off in their glamorous designer ski outfits. Experience a calmer version of the resort by coming in spring. Its Corvatsch mountain offers the best spring skiing being both higher than Corviglia and shadier. Because most of Corvatsch slopes face north they generally keep their snow longer. The more daring can also take a day at the nearby Diavolezza glacier, which usually offers good late skiing.

Tignes and Val d’Isère

As the pistes stay open until early May, France’s Espace Killy, shared over the Tignes and the Val d’Isère is a safe option for skiing at end of March and into April. The fact that 60% of its 300km of pistes are above 2500m definitely helps. Added to this are its healthy levels of natural snowfall, vast north-facing terrain and two amazing glaciers. Both resorts are good for all levels of skiers so you can please companions still gaining their footing. Tignes is located at an elevation of 2,100m, however, serious skiers can go up to 3,400m on its Grande Motte glacier which is open nine months of the year. Whereas Val d’Isere, starting at 1,850m, has more of the north-facing slopes.

klosters-ski-resort

Klosters, Switzerland

Tucked away in the heart of the beautiful Prattigau Valley, Klosters is a hidden gem which has maintained its authentic charm, it’s no wonder that it won the heart of the family of James Palmer-Tomkinson who founded his luxury skiing holiday company PT Ski in this Swiss resort. James shares why this is one of the best destinations in the Swiss Alps:

“It is the genuine article; an Alpine mountain village, with chalets built in the traditional style blending happily with local farmhouses creating all the atmosphere and beauty that this suggests,” describes James. “In days gone by it was the resort of choice for Hollywood movie stars and although the film set have moved on the cache of Klosters persists.

“Patrons now prefer it for its discreet and low key feel, a complete contrast to the more ostentatious resorts such as St Moritz and Gstaad. There are no designer shops or fur coats and its glamourous visitors love it for its understated chic.

“The other reason why they love it is for its world class skiing! Indeed, the skiing in Klosters is stunning and combined with Davos is one of the largest ski areas in Switzerland. The pistes are kept in immaculate condition and there are plenty of lovely wooden restaurants for coffee stops or sunny lunches on terraces. The 12 km run from the Weissfluh Gipfel down to Kublis is one of the longest runs in the world and a classic milestone for any skier.”

Val d'Isère city

Val d’Isere, France

Another luxurious French resort recommended by Andy Castle of Ultimate Luxury Chalets is the Val d’Isère. Once a traditional farming village, over the 20th century it was gradually transformed into one of the world’s biggest and best ski resorts. With fantastic skiing for all levels, The Espace Killy ski resort also incorporates the neighbouring high altitude station of Tignes. These have 300km of piste with heights of over 3500m. The area’s off-piste terrain is some of the most challenging and easily lift-accessed of any in Europe.

“It’s one of the world’s most recognisable resorts with an impeccable snow record and incredible glacial ski area,” adds on Andy. “Plus, the resort boasts awesome après ski bars and a good variety of restaurants which offer much better value for luxury than some other high end resorts.”

One of these is La Table de l’Ours, the one-michelin starred restaurant of the Hotel Les Barmes de l’Ours. It features an excellent gourmet menu and charming dining room with wooden beams, toasty fireplace and mountain decor.

The Valley also boosts a variety of shopping opportunities, ranging from high quality ski wear from brands like Moncler and Bognor to traditional Savoyard home decorations.

Where to Stay in Val d’Isère

To enjoy the social side of Val d’Isère to the fullest, Ultimate Luxury Chalets suggests their Domaine Toit Du Monde which has indoor and outdoor pools as well as ski in and out facilities. The chalet can also be split into two independent chalets – Himalaya and Toit Du Monde.

Sleeping 16, both chalets are protected by fortress-like stone walls, offering you perfect seclusion and exclusivity. The chalets are located on the piste in the area above La Daille which allows easy access to the Domaine de Espace Killy.

The chalets have been designed to feature the best of the alps and include massive fireplaces, breath-taking window stone seats, modern decor and state of the art facilities such as movie screens which appear at the touch of a button. Guests will marvel at the swimming pools cleverly set between the dining areas and the outdoor terraces, complete with jet stream and corner jacuzzi jets. Each chalet includes relaxing massage rooms, wine cellars and ski room with boot warmers, among other comfortable amenities.

The combination of both chalets gives you eight bedroom suites, all of which have separate sleeping and relaxation areas. The vast, beautiful bathrooms are surrounded by marble walls adorned with delicately engraved snowflakes, while the floor is subtly heated. Each has a rain shower which converts into a steam room which easily seating up to four or more people.
