Villa Borsato – Venice, Italy

As Italy expert, Katharina Alles-Trauttmansdorff, says, Venice is one of the greatest places on earth to explore as lovers. Pastel shade palazzi line peaceful canals, couples canoodle down cobblestoned streets, and lagoon vistas provide the perfect backdrop to your romantic retreat.

And Villa Borsato, an apartment on the third floor of a privately owned palazzo, makes a great Venetian love nest. The Palazzo is exceptionally well located at the mouth of Venice’s Grand Canal with great views over both the canal and the legendary Venetian Lagoon, and is just a stone’s throw of the glorious Piazza San Marco. Wake up to the meditative sounds of the lapping waters as the gondoliers move along the canal, the melodic ringing of San Giorgio Maggiore’s holy bells, and the whispering breeze.

The apartment has recently been redecorated in a classic style with a contemporary twist, with luxurious comfort at the heart of the layout and design. Some pieces of furniture were originally designed in 1826 for the Palazzo as it was then, by painter and designer Borsato, who also left his mark on the Teatro La Fenice. From the living room, master bedroom, and convivial shared terrace, incomparable views over Venice’s Grand Canal, the Santa Maria della Salute basilica, and the Punta della Dogana museum abound. You may well find yourselves getting lost in the vistas as you gaze out over Veneto.

Paris & Ile-de-France

Paris is a destination in itself and many visitors come time and again to take in the diverse pleasures of the French capital. World-class museums, incredible dining and a shopper’s paradise, there’s really something for everyone. It’s a great walking city which allows you to stop to admire curiosities you come across in areas like the Marais or Montmartre, where you duck into boutiques and enjoy a drink on a café terrace. The city’s parks are sublime and the perfect place to rest your feet and people watch, local favorites are the Luxembourg Gardens, Les Buttes-Chaumont and the Parc Monceau. End your day with some divine dining, either at an haute gastronomie establishment or a cozy neighborhood bistro.

Beyond the city’s borders, there is a multitude of excellent day trip options. For example, the Ile-de-France region which encircles Paris has dozens of gorgeous castles. The Palace of Versailles usually steals the limelight, however, many others are are much less crowded and highly worth visiting such as Fontainebleau, Vaux-le-Comte, Chantilly and Rueil Malmaison. Normandy & Brittany

Easily accessible from Paris either by train or car, many visitors travel to Normandy to visit the D-Day landing sites. These are very moving places of commemoration and can be visited in a long day trip or a several day itinerary. Mont-St-Michel is another regional highlight, the impressive abbey and village crowning an island off the coast. Seaside resorts like chic Deauville and picturesque Honfleur are also key tourist destinations.

Brittany remains slightly removed from the regular tourist track, a factor that has helped it retain its authentic character. Fervently proud of its distinct cultural heritage, the region’s stunning and rugged coastline is marked with sleepy fishing villages, lighthouses, and deserted pristine beaches of the Wild Coast.

Loire Valley & Burgundy

The Valley of the French Kings, dotted with hundreds of enchanting castles, is what French holiday dreams are made of. From picturesque cities in France and England to the best of Italy and Spain, here are our top picks for a city getaway this summer.

Villa F (left), Ca’Nova (right)

Venice, Italy

Venice is possibly the hottest of destination for a European city break this summer, namely for the 57th Biennale of Art which opened May 13th. According to our local experts at Villa F the biannual festival offers a very special summer in Venice with a focus around contemporary art. This year’s exhibit is under the title VIVA ARTE VIVA and is held at the Giardini, the Arsenale and other venues around the city through Sunday November 26th, 2017.

How to convert the comfort and convenience of a luxury hotel into an authentic local experience—this was the challenge our expert Erica Berman took on, and succeeded at beautifully, in the creation of her company Haven in. Her 20+ years in the luxury apartment and villa rental business has lead her to expand from one studio apartment in Paris to dozens of exquisite properties in various European destinations. Erica tells us more about the evolution of Haven in below.

Erica Berman

It all started with a good idea (and, frankly, a good view).

“My parents are the kind of travelers that only stay in 4-star hotels; the kind who want to explore on their own during the day, but return to something luxurious, full service, and familiar at night. Soon after my move to Paris in 1992, they decided it was time for a visit. As Mom and Dad prepped for their stay, I had an idea. They needed to see the city I fell in love with through the eyes of a local. I would convince them to stay in a friend’s newly renovated penthouse apartment that came with a big bonus: a balcony and a killer view of the Eiffel Tower.

Victor Hugo Chic Haven In

“Not only did they agree, but after their apartment stay, they couldn’t stop raving. Though they’d visited Paris before, this was a fresh vision and a new kind of luxury: living like a local in as if they, too, were Parisians, if only for a while.

“That’s when the idea sparked. If my 4-star hotel, comfort-loving parents could enjoy, even prefer, this type of hotel-alternative experience, certainly other travelers would, too. I took a leap, bought a charming studio in Montmartre with a friend, renovated and decorated it, and spread the word that it was available for rent for vacation stays.

“Being the early days, I marketed in magazines, faxed information, and sent printed photos by snail mail. It was old fashioned and slow. There was no website or even email. Things have greatly changed since the early 1990s and that adorable studio is no longer mine, but it was the incentive to start on a new and exciting path.

Today, Haven in has more than 50 boutique rental listings in Paris, Provence, Tuscany, and London. My team is here to help other creative travelers and luxe lovers to have that same authentic experience and their very own home-away-from-home just as my parents did, all those years ago.

“We are a business built on the joy of discovery, from unearthing the best local spots and tasting new flavors, to simply helping you get to know a new part of yourself in a new place—somewhere you feel at home, whether it’s for a vacation, an extended stay, or a lifetime.” —Erica Berman Creator, Haven in

“Of course, Salzburg has a wide variety of events and some excellent Advent markets, however, there are some exceptionally charming markets in nearly every village in the Salzkammergut,” says Monika. “The ones I like most are around the lakes like in St.Gilgen, St Wolfgang and Strobl.

“From November 20th to December 20th 2016 you can enjoy the Advent of the Villages event which takes place in the six villages of Fuschlsee. The weekends feature additional events like concerts and sleigh rides. St Wolfgang has some fabulous festive spirit around the market, plus you can also take boat rides on the lake.”

You can make enjoy the region’s Christmas spirit to the fullest with a pre-Christmas stay at the elegant Schloss Kogl castle, which has availability from now until December 24th (and then from January 2nd). A short drive from the pretty village of St. Georgen i. Attergau, the baroque castle was originally built in 1750 for the noble Khevenhüller family. In 1872 the Barons of Mayr-Melnhof acquired it and today the 4th, 5th and 6th generations of the family still reside at the castle.

In 2000, the entire castle was fully renovated with careful attention to retaining its historic character and beauty. In the evenings after you’ve toured the markets, relax by the cozy fireplace in the library or savor a gourmet meal in the refined dining room.

And if you can arrive earlier enough, you might be able to caught the London Philharmonia Orchestra and Lund Student Choir will be performing in Klosters Church on Saturday December 17th and Sunday the 18th. These concerts would be a lovely way to kick start Christmas!
