Sometimes travel can come from a surprising twist of fate. That’s exactly what happened to Pamela Murdock, an UltraVilla expert for Harbour Island in the Bahamas and San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Read on to discover how an unexpected envelope in the mail allowed her to start traveling and eventually led her to create her bespoke villa rental company.

pamela-murdock-photo-cropped

“When I was 20, “my” bank in New York made the innocent mistake of sending me a credit card. It was a miserably hot summer, I was dying to escape and, as usual, was short of funds. And then the MasterCard arrived. I’d barely opened the envelope when I realized I was holding the solution. Not only could I charge the airfare, I could also rent a small house so that my Labrador could come too. Because Lulu and I loved the beach, I started renting on Caribbean islands that allowed dogs to visit as well. When she became too old to travel, I branched out to other locations including the Bahamas and Mexico.

“After years of various jobs, 18 of them as a publicist in New York City, I decided to turn something I loved doing for myself into a business: finding vacation house rentals. I was sure if I liked the property friends would too and happily they always did. Those friends referred their friends and my business continued to grow. My goal has never been to have as many listings as possible. I prefer to keep my company small and customized. It also doesn’t matter to me whether someone would like a simple beach shack or a grand villa with staff, the effort put into finding the right place remains the same. And once on holiday, the only thing I want my clients to have to think about is what fun thing to do next.

“Now 16 years later, I still look at each prospective house as though I was taking it for myself. I still want to know what surrounds the property, what the views really are, whether the bathroom has a tub or shower and what size beds are in each room (reading “double bedroom” on a website doesn’t work for me.)

“In destinations like Harbour Island, Bahamas (pictured above), I’ve developed an extensive list of contacts and am happy to be able to offer clients the following services: arranging golf cart rental, advance grocery shopping, extra maid service, a cook (managing all details), in-house massage, personal training, restaurant reservations, special events and boat charters for diving, snorkeling, picnics and fishing (deep sea and bone) as well as organizing a taxi from/to the airport and round trip water taxi service. Very detailed information about any location is also provided.

“By the way, over 40 years later, I’m still renting vacation houses for myself and yes, still using that MasterCard to pay for them (albeit making much larger monthly payments for which the bank is happy)!” – Pamela H. Murdock

Whether you’re after the thrill of the chase or seeking a peaceful day surrounded by nature, fishing is a sport which can be enjoyed by many. Take to the open seas battling to reel in giant marlin, try your hand at spearfishing or leisurely cast your line fly fishing. You won’t be a fish out of water by taking your next fishing holiday at one of these fabulous destinations.

Sport fishing Bahamas

Deep Sea Fishing – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

According to our expert Pamela H. Murdock, one of the best places for deep sea fishing in the Caribbean is the Bahamas, in particular on Harbour Island.

“The summer is the best time for fishing,” advises Pamela. “The gorgeous island is a popular destination year round, however, in summer the sun worshipers have been mostly replaced by fishermen and divers. This is when sport fishing is fantastic with tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo in abundance. This is also the start of the marlin tournaments which can be found throughout the island chain. Bone fishing is great year round and there are several excellent guides on the island.
“Serious and amateur fishermen love to go out with Jeff Fox of Ocean Fox. Not only is he a really nice guy but he has a sixth sense as to where the fish are. A full or half day spent with him guarantees great sport and fun.”

Spear Fishing

Spearfishing –  St. Peter, Barbados

For something a little different, our expert Nicole George at Altman Villa Rentals recommends heading to Barbados to try spearfishing, a fantastic sport that combines the thrill of catching fish and the extreme tranquillity of free diving.

“It is unique in that spearfishing is one of the oldest methods of catching fish,” explains Nicole. “It’s extremely ecological, providing virtually zero bycatch thus reducing the damage to fish populations and ensuring sustainable fishing practices.

“Enjoyed all over the world, spearfishing is an incredible way to escape from the modern day stresses of life (regardless of modern technology in equipment) and relax your mind to that of the ocean. Spearfishing can be a great experience with clear waters and tasty tropical fish which can be caught all over Barbados on the Caribbean (South & West) side and the Atlantic (East).

The following locations are typical dive spots known for fish, ease of access and usually allow diving throughout most conditions: Just off the beach by Port St Charles Marina in St Peter, and just off of Needhams Point in St Michael.”

Diving – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

Over in The Bahamas, one of the best places for diving in the Caribbean is Harbour Island. Located two miles off the north coast of Eleuthera, the island offers excellent diving opportunities throughout the whole year.

“The Island was made famous by Jacques Cousteau and National Geographic,” describes our local villa expert Pamela H. Murdock. “One can swim through ridges and coral canyons that are full of sea life. For those also who love underwater photography, this is a spectacular spot.

“On the whole diving is better during the rainy season, May to November, when the water is warmer and clearer, and we can better access Bat Islands as well due to lower winds. In the dry season, however, with the cold water, we get the rays in abundance, and very rich plankton filled water that creates a lot of action.

“At different times of the year, you’ll be able to catch certain sealife. Whales are usually visible from January to March, and then again from August through November. The season to see sea turtles starts in June and extend through November. Giant Manta Rays and all rays (large schools of hublot replica golden rays and devil rays, and tons of roving stingrays) appear from January to March. Whale Sharks occasionally come, but it’s hard to guess a season, however, they usually appear from December to April as well. Since they like the warmer water, sharks are generally visible from May to November.”

Pamela H. Murdock can not only arrange the best places to stay in Harbour Island but also excursions with the island’s best dive master. Contact her here.

In villa veritas turks and caicos diving

Snorkeling – Turks and Caicos

There are many fabulous places to snorkel in the Caribbean, however, according to Laura Blair of In Villa Veritas, the snorkeling in the Turks and Caicos is phenomenal.

“The archipelago has the third largest barrier reef in the world,” explains Laura. “The water is the most lovely turquoise (pictured above) and the reef is amazing and teeming with fish and coral life.”

Providenciales offers some excellent snorkeling right from the beach. You can enjoy the best snorkeling off the north coast where there are two reefs. The Bight Reef is easy to access, but the more difficult to find Smith’s Reef has much more to see. Therefore, it might be better to book a boat trip to truly experience the reef, something In Villa Veritas can arrange. You’ll be able to swim above rainbow coral, spot some sea turtles, stingrays and other tropical sea life.

Contact In Villa Veritas here to learn about their exclusive villas in the Turks and Caicos.

Catherwood - Cenote diving

Cenote Diving – Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Scuba diving has become quite popular in Mexico, but adventurous and experienced divers might want to try cenote diving off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, as suggested by our experts at Catherwood Travels.

The omega replica peninsula sits on a huge limestone platform where freshwater flows like rivers through underground cave systems. Part of this land collapsed after the last ice age, creating sinkholes called cenotes. These offer one of the most unique diving experiences in the world.

However, it is mandatory to be certified in order to explore the hidden depths of these remarkable formations of stalagmites and stalactites. There are dive tours offered at every experience level and led by certified dive masters and supported by veteran ground crews.

Catherwood Travels can create custom cultural and active experiences in the Yucatan as well as fabulous accommodation at the area’s best haciendas and villas. Discover their fabulous offerings at this link.

Surfing immediately comes to mind when Hawaii is mentioned. Sylvia Delvaille Jones of Villas and Apartments Abroad sends us to one of the best places to hit the waves: the beautiful island of Kauai.

“It’s on the northern coast which is very lush and exotic,” details Sylvia. “Since it tends to be windier, it’s perfect for wind driven sports. A main focus of visitors to this island is outdoors activities, especially at sea.

“Hanalei Bay with its backdrop of mountains and waterfalls is a great base. Another ideal spot is Kahili Bay, one of Kauai’s most secluded and scenic beaches. Multisport lovers might prefer Rock Quarry beach with its excellent surfing, as well as paddle boarding/kayaking on the river.”

Rafting-Montana

White-Water Rafting – Montana, U.S.A.

Montana has some of the most awe-inspiring scenery of the Americas. Amidst the mountains snake powerful rivers, like the fabled Yellowstone River, the longest free-flowing river in North America. It originates in Yellowstone National Park and flows almost 700 miles to its confluence with the Missouri River.

One of the best watersport activities on this formidable river is white water rafting, advise our experts at Mountain Homes. They suggest trying out this activity through the legendary rapids of Yankee Jim Canyon. The location is ideal for first time rafters as well as experienced thrill-seekers. The narrow canyon features class III and class IV rapids and racing over them is a pulse-raising experience. The river can be paddled during a full or half day rafting trip like those offered by Wild West White Water Rafting.

You can experience Montana’s exceptional nature to the fullest by staying at the luxury lodges and homes by Mountain Homes found in the vicinity of Yellowstone River. Find out what they have available here.

Considered the shoulder season in many destinations around the world, the month of May can be a traveler’s delight. Fewer tourists and great deals, the cusp of the rainy season or the joys of spring, it’s still not too late to enjoy our favorite places to visit in May.

Glenapp Castle Scotland

Scotland

May is an excellent time to holiday to Scotland, the days are almost at their longest, wildflowers and rhododendrons are popping out in the countryside, plus statistically you have the best chance of the whole year of getting dry weather.

“The Glenapp Castle is a great place to go in spring,” highlights Andrew Loyd, one of our UK experts of Loyd & Townsend Rose. “It’s truly ideal for garden lovers.”

The impressive 19th-century castle, built for the Earl of Inchcape, is located close to the coast in the southwest of the country. Opened to guests since 2000, its 17 rooms, sophisticated drawing room and library evoke the utmost of Victorian splendour. Outside, the elegance is carried over in its historic Italian gardens and 36 acre private grounds.

Garden aficionados should roam beyond the castle walls to several noteworthy gardens in the vicinity. Andrew recommends exploring the clifftop Culzean Castle and its gorgeous 600 acres of park and woods where you can seek out the spring blossoms along the marked paths through meadows, forests and around secluded ponds. There’s also Castle Kennedy Gardens, an important historic garden as well as the famous Logan Botanic Garden, considered the country’s most exotic garden.

Whereas over at our other UK expert, Warren de Long of Blandings, recommends going to the coast of Fife, where they have some fabulous properties to base yourself for exploring the area.

“So much of the press for Scotland is about the Highlands and the Western Isles – but I think this part of Scotland is every bit as beautiful and full of charm.

“The obvious place to start, of course, is St Andrews, it’s historic university and the world-class golf should be enough to tempt anyone, but to my mind there is so much more. There is a glorious coastal path that is best between St Monans and Crail—beautiful coastline and great villages, as well as excellent fish & chips in the villages near Anstruther. If you are a bit more adventurous, there is the Elie Chain Walk (between Elie & Leven) where there is a bracing, otter-spotting trail over the cliffs where you can do a 2-to-3 hour scramble. It’s challenging but not as scary as it sounds!

“For those who would rather sit than walk, it is worth going to the nearby coastal village of Elie where The Ship Inn not only has great food, but also hosts beach cricket (only when it is low tide!) starting in May and going on throughout the Summer. Pittenweem is another great spot on the beautiful East Neuk coastline, and in August each year they host the Pittenweem Arts Festival—which is great fun for families, and growing in popularity each year. Nature-lovers have plenty to see too, as there are regular ferries from Anstruther to the Isle of May which is known for its puffins, seals, porpoise, dolphin and even the occasional whale!”

House On A Dune Pamela Murdock

Bahamas

“May is one of my favorite months to be in the Bahamas, in particular Harbour Island,” says our our Bahamas expert Pamela Murdock. “The air temperature ranges from about 70 – 85 degrees and the water is about 80 degrees. It’s simply perfect. Though it’s the beginning of the rainy season, the weather is generally beautiful. While this idyllic small island remains a wildly popular destination year round, by May the sun worshippers have been joined by those who love fishing and diving.”

We are in luck because Pamela was just on Harbour Island a week ago scouting out some new luxury properties to add to her already extensive portfolio and gave us these insider tips:

“Of course I made time to do some of my favorite things like snorkeling with Jeff of Ocean Fox and shopping for chic clothes at the Blue Rooster and just around the corner at the island’s newest store, Drake. We also had an fantastic lunch at Ocean Talley. Once a best-kept secret, this little jewel is getting more and more popular so definitely make a reservation, especially on weekends,” advises Pamela wisely. “It’s located in a lighthouse on Whale Point, Eleuthera which is about a 10-minute boat trip from Harbour Island. Definitely try their Tequila Shrimp as a first course – It’s so good you may want to have it for your main as well! It really is the perfect way to spend a Bahamian afternoon.”

We couldn’t agree more! A big thank you to Pamela for sharing this valuable local insight. You can learn more about Pamela’s offerings on beautiful Harbour Island at here.

Costa Rica

One of our Costa Rica experts, Jane Moore of Papagayo, confirmed that May is a wonderful time to visit the country. Her luxury villas are located in the most upscale area of Costa Rica, home to the Four Seasons and an Arnold Palmer Golf Course. However, the area is still not overly developed so it feels very private.

“May is the beginning of the green season,” explains Jane. “We’re located in a tropical dry forest so when it rains, even just a little, everything becomes greener. Plus temperatures have started  cooling down from April’s extreme heat. In addition, since it’s the fringe season, just after spring break and before summer school holidays, it’s a good time to visit for couples. It’s like you have the place all to yourself.”

It’s also perfect timing because Papagayo has a fantastic last minute deal of up to 50% savings on certain villas for stays through June 01, 2016. Jane has sweetened the deal even further by running a flash sale which extends this deal for rental up to Nov 1 for bookings made by April 30, 2016.
