Zermatt

At an altitude from 1,620m to 3,899m, Zermatt has Europe’s highest ski lifts and its largest glacier ski area, making it a complete year round resort. You’re virtually guaranteed to have snow here, especially due to the resort’s efficient snowmaking system which can make up the difference from any natural lack of powder. Zermatt is also a good destination for all levels of skiers so beginnings and advanced skiers can both happily zoom down the slopes and enjoy the balmy spring weather.

Klosters

The picture-postcard Swiss resort of Klosters is a great bet for late season skiing since more than 80% of the ski area is above 2000m and a majority of its slopes are north facing. In addition, the resort is well-equipped with snow cannons to ensure coverage even late into the season. It’s a great option for families due to the fantastic kids week programs organized by our Klosters’ experts at PT Ski which run the two weeks of the Easter holidays.

They have specially designed programs catering to all ages, from the under fives in the “Pandas” course to older teenagers getting used to off piste in the “All Mountain” course. Their instructors are from the local ski school and they have family friendly PT Ski reps overseeing the “pastoral” side who make sure that all courses run smoothly. They believe that kids learn best when they are having fun, proven true by the huge smiles on the children’s faces. In addition to the ski program, their beautiful Casa Chimera chalet (see below) is also still available… but it could go quickly!

As the pistes stay open until early May, France’s Espace Killy, shared over the Tignes and the Val d’Isère is a safe option for skiing at end of March and into April. The fact that 60% of its 300km of pistes are above 2500m definitely helps. Added to this are its healthy levels of natural snowfall, vast north-facing terrain and two amazing glaciers. Both resorts are good for all levels of skiers so you can please companions still gaining their footing. Tignes is located at an elevation of 2,100m, however, serious skiers can go up to 3,400m on its Grande Motte glacier which is open nine months of the year. Klosters, Switzerland

Swiss charm, fabulous skiing and jewelbox chalets, there are many reasons to love this traditional village resort, a favorite of our expert James Palmer-Tomkinson. His love for the exceptional resort has been passed down through the generations and sparked the creation of his luxury skiing holiday company PT Ski.

“In the past it was the resort of choice for Hollywood movie stars and although they have since moved on, the cache of Klosters remains,” explains James. “Visitors now prefer it for its discreet and low key ambiance, a complete contrast to the more flamboyant resorts like St Moritz and Gstaad. There are no designer shops, but its glamourous visitors love it instead for its understated chic.”

In addition to its authenticity, it also has amazing skiing. Combined with Davos, it’s one of the largest ski areas in the whole country. Avid skiers can enjoy perfectly groomed slopes and beginners can gain courage via its excellent ski schools. At the end of an invigorating day on the slopes, settle in for a cozy evening fireside at one of the town’s quaint but luxurious chalets.

Val d'Isère city

Val d’Isère, France

The French Alps have dozens of resorts, but our Alps expert Andy Castle of Ultimate Luxury Chalets adores the Val d’Isère. This former traditional farming village nestled in the Tarentaise Valley close to the Italian border, has become one of the world’s premier ski resorts.

Home to the the Espace Killy ski resort, it also incorporates the neighbouring high altitude station of Tignes, bring together over 300km of pistes, elevating to heights of over 3500m. In addition, the area’s off-piste terrain is both thrilling and easily accessible by some of its 94 ski lifts. New to these this season will be the state-of-the-art Solaise gondola, which will replace the old Solaise Express chairlift.

If your bones aren’t too weary from your physical exertion, discover some of the resort’s superb après ski bars and restaurants. On the whole, these tend to be a much better value for luxury than some of the other high end resorts of the Alps.

Plus, there is a vast array of non-skiing activities to please the whole family from zipline tours to dog sledding and from wall climbing to sleigh rides.

On the development front, there are big plans to expand the resort in the coming decade to make it the “American Alp.” Therefore, it’s an up-and-coming resort to add to your list now!

klosters-ski-resort

Klosters, Switzerland

Tucked away in the heart of the beautiful Prattigau Valley, Klosters is a hidden gem which has maintained its authentic charm, it’s no wonder that it won the heart of the family of James Palmer-Tomkinson who founded his luxury skiing holiday company PT Ski in this Swiss resort. James shares why this is one of the best destinations in the Swiss Alps:

“It is the genuine article; an Alpine mountain village, with chalets built in the traditional style blending happily with local farmhouses creating all the atmosphere and beauty that this suggests,” describes James. “In days gone by it was the resort of choice for Hollywood movie stars and although the film set have moved on the cache of Klosters persists.

“Patrons now prefer it for its discreet and low key feel, a complete contrast to the more ostentatious resorts such as St Moritz and Gstaad. There are no designer shops or fur coats and its glamourous visitors love it for its understated chic.

“The other reason why they love it is for its world class skiing! Indeed, the skiing in Klosters is stunning and combined with Davos is one of the largest ski areas in Switzerland. The pistes are kept in immaculate condition and there are plenty of lovely wooden restaurants for coffee stops or sunny lunches on terraces. The 12 km run from the Weissfluh Gipfel down to Kublis is one of the longest runs in the world and a classic milestone for any skier.”

Adjacent to this and separated by a large double sided fireplace is a cosy games area, ideal for a round of backgammon or a rubber of bridge.
