St. Barthélemy

Come September, St. Barth takes une sieste, waking up in mid-October to prepare for the season. This makes it the perfect time to visit, according to our local expert Peg Walsh of St. Barth Properties, whose absolute favorite month on the island is November.

“Villas are being refreshed, chefs are updating menus and boutique owners are stocking their shelves with the latest designer duds,” says Peg. “In November the island ‘raises the curtain.’ Everything is fresh and new, except our sugar-sand beaches – they remain pristine and gorgeous year round.”

Peg recommends their luxurious six bedroom Villa Galaxie with its stunning seascape and sunset views, plus it’s also currently available for Thanksgiving. Located on the quieter side of Gustavia, it’s walking distance to restaurants, shops and Shell Beach.

Architecturally designed to leverage the magnificent view, the main pavilion opens to a sunny terrace with a fantastic infinity pool and is configured to include spacious living and dining areas. The interior features ultra-modern chic décor, an expansive sleek bar and a futuristic kitchen equipped with high-end appliances.

There is a beautiful master suite, housed in a private pavilion whereas the other five comfortable bedrooms, all with baths en-suite, are located in an adjacent, separate pavilion. Outdoor living takes place on the large terraces furnished with a dining table and many poolside lounge chairs. This is an amazing vacation home and ideal for a holiday with your extended family or venue for a group celebration.

Saint Martin

Squeeze the last out of summer in the Caribbean by scooping up this fantastic special on the L’Oasis Villa in Saint Martin, available through our experts at Villas and Apartments Abroad. November is the perfect time to go before prices double, triple and quadruple starting mid-December, plus the weather is usually extremely pleasant at this time of year, with temperatures from the mid 70s to low 80s on average. Local ambiance is also at a high in November with St. Martin’s Day taking place on the 11th featuring lively festivities, music, parades and sporting events.

“The Moroccan inspired beachfront estate is one of their premier villas on the island,” explains Sylvia Delvaille Jones, director of Villas and Apartments Abroad. “It is among the highest ranking villas in the Caribbean that seem to offer just about everything one could desire on a holiday, like a top class boutique resort within itself. It has hosted big names in the entertainment, top name producers and actors, Wall Street bankers and hedge fund managers.

“From its cliff high position, you can enjoy wide open vistas of the turquoise Caribbean Sea under blue skies, the beautiful Creole rocky coastline, distant specks of islands and verdant mountains. Elegant palm trees stand tall over green grassy lawns, blazing bougainvilleas and the heavily fruited sea grape trees that bow its branches over the sand.”

L’Oasis is that ideal setting for a group of busy friends to be together, families on that special holiday or celebrating a birthday or anniversary with friends. Sylvia and her team can arrange anything from a fireworks display, a beach party with a live band, a fabulous lunch cruise on a yacht or picnic on a tiny uninhabited island. She can also organize excursions further afield like golf on Anguilla or a private plane to go to St. Barth for the day to visit friends for cocktails and a swim.

If you book L’Oasis for a week in low season, you’ll receive one to two nights free (excluding Thanksgiving, conditions apply). Contact Villa and Apartments Abroad here for more details.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Over in the hills of central Mexico, regional expert Pamela Murdock tempts travelers to the charming colonial city of San Miguel de Allende, where the enchanting Quinta Quebrada historic home she represents is located.

“November in San Miguel is a wonderful and really fun time of year to be in this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage town,” describes Pamela. “The weather is lovely (with temperatures ranging from about 80° down to 50°), plus there are fewer tourists and less traffic. In addition to great restaurants, shops and places to see, there are also several holidays taking place in November.”

“The highlight of these takes place across the country on November 1st and 2nd, two days dedicated to remembering deceased family members. The 1st is Todos los Santos (All Saints Day) and the 2nd is the famous Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) when many spend the entire night in the cemetery eating, drinking and welcoming the dead back from their resting place. It’s a fascinating event to experience firsthand, however, if you’re not ready for possibly long lines to get through the cemetery gates, the celebrations take place around the whole town is part which is cast in masses of marigolds. They say the bright flowers help the souls find their way home. Fiesta flags are strung across the Jardín, the main plaza, and adorn most of the shrines.

“Instead of just welcoming the dead at midnight November 1st in the cemetery, San Miguel throws the weeklong Calaca (skull) Festival which features several parades, all-night celebrations and fireworks, among other things. Everywhere you look are people with elaborate face make-up dressed up as ‘muertes’ (dead brides and grooms, banditos, etc.). Think of it as a much much smaller version of the marvelous opening scene in the James Bond movie, Spectre, which was filmed in Mexico City’s grand Zócalo Plaza.”

Live this experience to the fullest by staying at Quinta Quebrada, the most exceptional and intriguing house in San Miguel de Allende. The magical 16th-century house, is hidden from the town by tall walls which enclose almost one acre of gorgeous grounds where you’ll find courtyards, follies, gardens full of climbing roses and cascading bougainvillea, multiple terraces, loggias, a pool and a hot tub.

The interior is like a living museum, decorated with period Mexican furniture and art with 17th and 18th-century furnishings and decorations from faraway destinations like India, Italy, and Spain. It has with 11 bedrooms and a total of 13,864 square feet of living space over three floors. The property offers the utmost privacy, yet it is only a short walk from El Jardín, the main plaza of the picturesque old city.

If you miss the celebrations of All Saints Day and the Day of the Dead, you could also plan your trip around one of these other November events:

  • November 16-20: The International Jazz and Blues Festival
  • Last two weeks of November: Feria Nacional de la Lana y Latón (National Wool & Brass Fair)
  • November 20-21: The celebration of the anniversary of the 1910 Revolution
  • November 21: The Feast Day of Santa Cecilia. Since she’s the patron saint of musicians, people gather at midnight in front of the Oratorio church for an all-night serenade to the Virgin.
  • Thanksgiving: Though it’s obviously not celebrated in Mexico, some restaurants serve a “traditional” meal or go more local and have turkey with mole sauce!

Just some of the local insight you can have by booking your trip to San Miguel de Allende and staying at Quinta Quebrada with Pamela Murdock Inc. Contact her here.

Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica

Further down from Mexico, November is also a fabulous month to visit Costa Rica’s Peninsula Papagayo. Our local expert Jane Moore of Papagayo Luxury entices us to this gorgeous area on the country’s Pacific coast:

“The rains have left, and the tropical dry forest is lush and green,” details Jane. “It is a ‘fringe’ season, so there are fewer crowds all the way up until the festive period starts in mid-December. Plus, the rates are low during November. In fact, Papagayo Luxury is offering the 7th night free at any of their condos, from now through Dec 14 (including Thanksgiving!).”

A perfect multi-generational family holiday can be had at their Villa Belvedere which is mostly located on one level (it has two steps down to living room, and the second master is on the second floor). This home has two identically sized master suites (stacked), so it also works well for two families traveling together. It also has two private pools and a hot tub. The smaller pool has large shallow area, ideal for small children. It features a double queen room, so a group of for children can sleep together in one room. In addition, there is a separate entertainment room with Apple TV, which can be closed off for movie night.

Just minutes away is the Prieta Beach Club and Nacascolo Beach, a long beach with flat water (bay side). It has a long shallow entry so no sudden drop offs. This is great for early beach mornings when kids are up before the beach club is open. Further family fun can be had at a nearby putt putt course at the driving range.

Scotland, the United Kingdom

Take in the last of the fall colors on leisurely country strolls while holidaying in November in Scotland. The best place to enjoy the season or enjoy an exceptional family holiday around American Thanksgiving is at the spectacular The Glenapp Castle by our UK experts Loyd & Townsend Rose

“The night skies in November are amazing,” reports Andrew Loyd, co-director of Loyd & Townsend Rose, who’s been spending quite a lot of time at Glenapp already this autumn. “There’s no light pollution and meteor showers galore. It’s a great time of year for windswept walks, roaring log fires and a wee dram.”

Situated not far from the coast in the southwest of the country, this vast 19th-century castle was built for the Earl of Inchcape and has been opened to guests since 2000. As you approach, you’ll immediately be struck by its stunning exterior and once inside, you’ll marvel at the Victorian splendour exuded through the beautifully decorated interiors.

Myanmar

It can be very challenging to travel to Myanmar when it’s too hot or during rainy season, however, from October the rains begin to subside, making the month of November an excellent time to visit. In November visitors can also beat some of the crowds around Christmas time and the New Year. This month you you can also experience the Shwezigon Pagoda festival in Bagan, held from the 13th to the 18th. Over these five days the compound converts into a vibrant marketplace when pilgrims and villagers from near and far come to pay homage to Buddha whose relics are enshrined in the Pagoda.

An amazing way to experience this festival as well as the various facets of Myanmar is on a private cruise with Amara River. They have a small fleet of beautiful traditional teak river boats which can hold up to 10 or 14 passengers and are available for private charter. These traditional wooden boats were custom built for Amara and feature modern luxury amenities in their bedroom cabins as well as on their relaxing upper deck from where you can observe the gorgeous sites you float by on the Irrawaddy River.

Since the cruises are private you can design your desired route with the help of their local expertise. A six-day cruise could start in the centuries-old city of Mandalay, journey past the amazing heritage sites of Bagan, past typical Burmese villages, stop in at the capital city of Yangon before ending at the Indian Ocean in the Gulf of Martaban.

In this latest edition of How We Started, we met Katharina Allès Trauttmansdorff of Trust&Travel and excellence.villas, who shares the enchanting and lively story of how working for a vineyard created the roots for an entirely different Italian venture: the creation of one of Italy’s top collections of luxury villa rentals.

Katharina

Last night, I managed to break into a cocktail party where I met a slightly eccentric English aristocrat:

– Catharina! Posh name! With a C or with a K?

– With a K. Or with a C, I don’t mind, have your pick!

– Well… I’ll take the K. And, if I may, what is your curriculum vitae, Katharina with a K?

My curriculum vitae ?! Well…  I don’t remember how I worked my way out of it, but this gentleman’s question gave me an idea. So here you are : this is my curriculum vitae. Or, I should say, my curriculum Italiae!

In my twenties, I used to work in a wine-growing estate in Tuscany. One day, its proud owner came up to me and said: “As you know, Katharina, part of my estate is now vacant, and sadly dormant. I would like to bring it back to life; open its doors to nice people – travellers, vacationers, friends – and share with them the life we have the privilege to enjoy here. Do you think you could help me, pretty young lady, to carry through this wild venture?”

We stared at each other for a few seconds and… “It’s a deal! Let’s get down to work!”

After helping this spirited Tuscan to refurbish and decorate his vacant estate – which in itself was an outstanding piece of the Italian historical heritage, – I went out and found his first clients. Instantaneous success and word of mouth did the rest. Many other estate owners in the area called on me to restore and convert – with the “wise traveller”  in mind and without altering their quintessence – the houses, villas, castles, farms and fortresses situated on their lands.

That’s how Trust&Travel  was born, an agency I founded more than 20 years ago and which I have been managing since then. Today, it serves as link between 120 exceptional properties and the wayfaring souls seeking to be at one with Italy.

With Excellence Villas, I took up a brand-new challenge. This latest venture will enable us to cater for an affluent clientele interested in world-class luxury residences in Italy.

Italy at its very best. Hand-picked, thoroughly inspected world-class villas or city apartments. Outstanding locations. Impeccable service. Personalized attention. State-of-the-art amenities. Guaranteed privacy. Warmth, hospitality and authenticity. Reliability and trust.

My team and I have intimate knowledge of each listing which we visit regularly, and we work closely with the owners to maintain quality control.

The first time I set foot on Italian soil, I was 15, and the passion has not in the least withered since. I have created Trust&Travel and excellence.villas to share with you what I know and what I treasure about this unique country.

Buon viaggio, Katharina

“The extraordinary waterfront estate near Pont-Aven in Brittany which was created by the owner using the material from seven abandoned army barracks that he purchased, harvested the wood, the ironworks, the bricks, massive beams, rocks, doors etc. and built a historic house. It is filled with artwork, some from the great masters as the owner was an art dealer and bloodline of French Royalty.

“There are 11 bedrooms (most  are suites) divided among three houses with seven bedrooms in the main house, three in the “Blue house” and one in the “sailor house” by the river. Other buildings on the estate include the tennis house next to the courts and an A frame house with a screening room. There is also a wine cellar with many “important” bottles. There are two stables and 6 magnificent Brittany horses on the estate.

“The vegetable gardens is about one acre and they grow artichokes and loads of other vegetables like you find in the Caribbean or in Africa. There are also amazing herb gardens. The chicken are free range and fresh eggs and the fish comes in every day directly from the sea. Plus there is always meat from hunts.

It is perfectly located on the sea with beaches and several boats and other equipment for land, around the property and water.

“This house is fantastic for the fall as the pool is heated and you can enter from a hatch door into the water and just swim out. To add to its uniqueness, there is a secret place in the garden on a small private plateau where you find a crude stone slab on legs where apparently the Druids performed rituals.”

Sylvia Delvaille Jones of Villas and Apartments Abroad enlivens the senses with her description of the magical hilltop Villa Barbara, with the port at its feet, and the incredible chef Angela behind the phenomenal dishes coming from its kitchen:

“Angela keeps guests from places around the world coming back to Villa Barbara year after year. Her sauces are made from scratch and so is her fresh pasta.

“Guests enjoy dinners al fresco under the stars. Her palate pleasing dishes include grilled peppers with anchovies, homemade pasta with pesto, fresh basil and vine ripened sweet tomatoes; whole roasted branzino filleted or encased in sea-salt oven cooked, served with a lite lemon butter sauce, crunchy green beans, rice or pureed parsley potatoes, slow cooked stewed rabbit (a favorite local dish) served over basmati rice or whole boneless chicken with black olives and sweet plump tomatoes seasoned with garlic, sage, thyme rosemary topped with toasted pine nuts. Dessert could be the chef’s special homemade lemon cake lightly drizzled with confetteria and topped with strawberries.

“By day, dine poolside with a glass of crisp white or rose under the vine-draped gazebo and take in the breathtaking views of the sea and boats bobbing out at sea like little toys… It does not get any better as you take it all in from your mountaintop perch. The medieval town of Lucignano in Tuscany - Italy

Lucignano

Halfway between Siena and Arezzo, Katharina Allès Trauttmansdorff of Trust&Travel and excellence.villas takes us to Lucignano, a remarkably well conserved medieval, walled hill-top village.

“Its altitude and strategic position meant that between 1200 and 1500 it was continually the subject of battles between these cities,” reveals Katharina. “Its walls, with three gates, were constructed by the Sienese in 1371. Lucignano is famous for its elliptical shape, the streets are arranged in a circle, a rare example of intact medieval town planning.”

mulino 1

Where to Stay near Lucignano

The refined and rustic Il Mulino villa, available through Trust&Travel and excellence.villas, is located on an organic farm overlooking the picturesque Tuscan landscape, the ideal and relaxing base for exploring this charming corner of the region.

Mulino means mill in Italian and thus the building still retains some of the features of its original purpose including the two long stone walls which used to channel the water from a nearby stream towards the mill. Today these two walls form a natural enclosure for the pool.

The farm was purchased by the Mozzoni Paravicini Crespi family in the 1960’s who carefully restored the farm and its buildings to create a bucolic ideal of a simple lifestyle in harmony with nature and the local farmers who still produces olive oil and raises the local white wide-horned cattle.

The beautiful and charming house has evolved over the centuries. It began as a tower and then expanded with the needs of each new generation. On the ground floor is a large living and dining room with a fireplace and French windows leading onto a terrace covered in vines for al fresco meals. The well-equipped kitchen has a marble-topped table for informal breakfasts as well as an adjacent larder; as well as a single bedroom with shower, and a laundry room.
The first floor has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. A further double and single bedroom with bath are at the end of an outdoor passage. The garden has many inviting corners for reading, writing or dozing in the shade, all fully equipped with outdoor furniture.

One of the best ways to gain insight into the culture of a country is through its gastronomy, which is best done by visiting a local farmers’ market. This is especially enjoyable if you’re staying in an apartment or villa rental, where you can savor your delicious wares back at your home away from home. From the South of France to the peaks of the Swiss Alps and from the Greek islands to the British Isles, here’s our pick of some of the top markets across Europe.

Marché Saxe-Breteuil – Paris, France

Shopping at the market is still very much a custom in France and the capital city is no exception. With more than 80 outdoor markets across Paris on any given day (except Mondays) you’ll find a market in almost every neighborhood. Not all markets are the same, however, and that which pops up every Thursday and Saturday morning along Avenue de Saxe, in the chic 7th arrondissement, stands out for both its excellent stalls and its exceptional views of the Eiffel Tower and the Invalides. On display is a wide array of France’s finest produce, cheeses, charcuterie and other gastronomic products which extol l’art de vivre à la francaise.

Testaccio Market

Mercato Testaccio – Rome, Italy

Most visitors to Rome browse the stalls of the popular Campo dei Fiori, however, for a genuine market experience in Rome, make your way to the Mercato Testaccio. Found close to Piramide subway station south of the Colosseum, the local market may now be found in a newly constructed building, but it still remains a true neighborhood market. Here you’ll find grandmothers picking out fresh ingredients for that day’s meals, see fresh pasta being made before your eyes, oggle the variety of seasonal artichokes or tomatoes, and hopefully leave with some delicious snacks for a picnic lunch down on the nearby Tiber river.

Located just north of the Toledo subway station, this daily farmers’ market is popular with locals. Walk the crowded lanes to take in the colorful sights of seasonal fruits, bins upon bins of fresh fish (Naples is a port city after all), small production buffalo mozzarella and more varieties of tomatoes than you could ever imagine.

Greek Market Fish

Laiki Rhodes Town – Rhodes, Greece

Most towns across mainland Greece and the surrounding islands have a weekly or bi-weekly laiki; genuine farmers’ markets. These were first established in 1929 in an effort by the government to protect farmers, eliminating the middleman so they could sell directly to customers. If you’re holidaying in the Dodecanese or visiting the archaeological sites on Rhodes, you can find some delicious local food – and escape the crowds – at the laiki in Rhodes Town. Held every Wednesday and Saturday, you’ll be tempted by the boisterous vendors hawking homemade dolmades, straight off the boat seafood, bunches of gorgeous grapes and blocks of fabulous feta.

Lake Como
The seaside beaches of Europe are among the most beautiful in the world, attracting millions of sun seekers during the summer months. Consequently, it’s hard to avoid crowded coastlines, that come with endless rows of lounge chairs, bumper-to-bumper traffic along narrow roads and long queues at bars and restaurants. Our advice? Leave behind the masses and enjoy the delights of summer at these stunning lakes found in Europe’s sublime Lake Districts.

Excellence Villas Lake Como 2

Lake Como – Italy

For centuries, the Italian Lake District has been one of the most sought-after vacation spots in Europe. Surrounded by the rolling forests of the foothills of the Alps, its gentle waters are dotted with scenic villages and lavish villas. There are eight main lakes, but Gaia de Bueger of Trust&Travel and excellence.villas doesn’t hesitate one moment in choosing her favorite: Lake Como.

“The romantic poet Shelley correctly stated that it ‘exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty.’ The best way to discover the lake is definitively by cruising on a slow ferry floating past villas and small villages clinging to the water’s edge. You can stop in Varenna, a small village on the eastern shore of Lake Como.

“Here you can lunch at Cavallino: La Trattoria Dei Pescatori, a delightful place serving great fish dishes. Then, from the dock, stroll south to Villa Monastero, a former monastery and noble residence that today draws visitors to its lakeside gardens. On the opposite shore, you can visit another jewel of Como, Villa Carlotta, a former marquis’s mansion dating from the late 17th century and its romantic Italian gardens. In the city of Como, a favorite restaurant is Market Place, which is a sophisticated venue in the city center with only 12 seats.”

A perfect base from which to discover Lake Como is the sophisticated Villa dell’Imperatrice. The neoclassical villa is virtually suspended over the water on a beautifully manicured 7-acre park. It sleeps 12 guests in six double bedrooms, four with ensuite bathrooms and two with their own private bathrooms across the corridor large windows. The decor is a stylish mix of classic antiques and comfortable modern furniture. It has lovely French doors, a spacious terrace, a balcony, a private boat deck as well as a panoramic swimming pool with phenomenal views over the lake.

palazzo facade & lake

Lake Garda – Italy

Though it’s often overshadowed by its neighbor, Lake Como, many similar pleasures and beauty can be enjoyed on Lake Garda, a favorite of Marina Gratsos from Carpe Diem Luxury Travel.

“There are plenty of picturesque towns on the lake,” says Marina. “Like the lovely historic town of Salò, dating back to Roman times. Visit on a Saturday to catch its excellent morning market, admire the city center’s Renaissance palazzos and take a stroll along its promenade (the longest on Lake Garda) before having lunch of traditional local dishes at the refine Hotel Laurin.

“While vacationing on the lake you can also visit Il Vittoriale, the fascinating, bizarre and exotic house of the great Italian poet, eccentric and proto-fascist Gabriele d’Annunzio. Lastly, book a table at the gorgeous hotel Villa Feltrinelli for a delicious meal at its Michelin-starred restaurant.”

Nearby Salò is arguably the finest private property on Lake Garda: this early 16th-century lakefront palazzo that has been in the owner’s family since its foundation. The palazzo has a beautiful garden, three little beaches on the lake, a private dock, six bedrooms and six bathrooms and comes with staffing. There is no pool, but guests generally swim in the lake from the house, or take out the boats and do day trips or water sports on the lake.

Lake Attersee – Austria

With its 76 lakes, the Austrian Lake District of Salzkammergut, is one of Europe’s finest. Once the playground of Austria’s aristocracy, including the Emperor himself, the area boasts crystal clear blue lakes, green pre-alpine mountains, quaint villages and elegant lakeside villas.

Highlights of the area include the towns of Mondsee and UNESCO World Cultural certified Hallstatt. However, according to our local expert Monika Mayr-Melnhof at Schloss Kogl Castle, Lake Attersee combines the best attributes of the region. The largest lake in Salzkammergut, Attersee was the retreat for many artists, musicians and intellectuals like Gustav Klimt, Gustav Mahler and Johannes Brahms.

Spend some time communing with its spectacular nature by hiking through peaceful forests or by enjoying the lake’s many watersports such as swimming, sailing, water-skiing or diving. Monika also recommends attending a chamber concert at the Pfarrkirche Sankt Georgen Church. Afterward sample some of the region’s best wiener schnitzel at the elegant restaurant Bräugasthof Aichingerin Nussdorf.

In the nearby countryside is the refined Schloss Kogl Castle. Built in 1750, it has been owned by the Barons of Mayr-Melnhof since 1872. The baroque castle was entirely renovated in 2000 and is furnished in an elegant fin-du-siècle style. When you’re not exploring the area’s many splendors you can sit by the fireplace in the library, lounge by the pool in the garden, meander the graceful grounds or strike out on their historic bowling lane.

castle loch ness scotland

Loch Ness – Scotland

The British Isles have several Lake Districts, but Andrew Loyd, director of Loyd & Townsend Rose, takes us north to Scotland and in particular to Loch Ness. Certainly the country’s most famous lake – thanks to its legendary monster – Loch Ness is also the country’s largest.

“Undoubtedly, one of the most popular things to do on the lake is a boat cruise in search of ”Nessie,” says Andrew. “However, there are many other excellent local attractions like the Culloden Battlefield, an important site of the religious civil war, historic Cawdor Castle and the ruins of Castle Urquhart.

“The area is also ideal for hill walking, bicycling and horseback riding. Hunting fans can take their hand at archery, falconry and clay & game shooting. Golfers may want to journey a little further north to tee off at the Royal Dornoch Golf Club. Make sure to have a meal at the quaint Dores Inn. Located right on the loch, its friendly staff serve up modern dishes and traditional Scottish cuisine, like their famous Stuart Grant Haggis with Neeps & tatties, mustard cream sauce.”

Enjoy the best of Scottish country life by staying at the exceptional Baronial Castle. Found on the banks of the lake, this authentic Highland Estate is the only habitable castle on Loch Ness. The classically furnished castle sleeps 28 in its meticulously restored luxurious state bedrooms. Have a moment to yourself in its opulent drawing room and library, or pick up a cue in the billiards room. The 500-acre estate features formal gardens, woodland and a private marina from which to embark onto the loch.
