Villa Borsato – Venice, Italy

As Italy expert, Katharina Alles-Trauttmansdorff, says, Venice is one of the greatest places on earth to explore as lovers. Pastel shade palazzi line peaceful canals, couples canoodle down cobblestoned streets, and lagoon vistas provide the perfect backdrop to your romantic retreat.

And Villa Borsato, an apartment on the third floor of a privately owned palazzo, makes a great Venetian love nest. The Palazzo is exceptionally well located at the mouth of Venice’s Grand Canal with great views over both the canal and the legendary Venetian Lagoon, and is just a stone’s throw of the glorious Piazza San Marco. Wake up to the meditative sounds of the lapping waters as the gondoliers move along the canal, the melodic ringing of San Giorgio Maggiore’s holy bells, and the whispering breeze.

The apartment has recently been redecorated in a classic style with a contemporary twist, with luxurious comfort at the heart of the layout and design. Some pieces of furniture were originally designed in 1826 for the Palazzo as it was then, by painter and designer Borsato, who also left his mark on the Teatro La Fenice. From the living room, master bedroom, and convivial shared terrace, incomparable views over Venice’s Grand Canal, the Santa Maria della Salute basilica, and the Punta della Dogana museum abound. You may well find yourselves getting lost in the vistas as you gaze out over Veneto.

Located close to Niagara Falls, the exquisite eight-bedroom estate sits on a 16-acre peninsula on Bucks Bay with 1590 linear feet of total waterfront.

“There are close to 2000 islands of various sizes that can be found along the Saint Lawrence River, belonging to both the Canadian and the United States,” explains Sylvia. “On one single island, one side could be owned by Canada and the other side by the US. This is where the wealthy bankers and other industrialists from around the country owned mansions and where they came to spend summers with their families, entertaining other important bold name families.”

One of these is this supremely private family retreat, surrounded by thick forest. Entering the estate you are greeted by the sound of gentle waterfalls and the sight and scents of a wonderful array of fragrant flowers. There is a vast 14,000 sq. ft. main residence and a separate guest/staff house. The interiors are accented with beautiful woods, local stones and marble. Its various gathering areas include the refined living room and formal dining room.

Guests can relax outdoors on the generous deck and patio areas, a two-level covered area with summer kitchen and a fire pit and in the heated swimming pool with natural waterfall and rocky elements. They can also take to the water with the use of various boats for boating, skiing, fishing, exploring various islands as well as other water sports equipment at guests disposal. In the area are several public golf courses for all levels of play. There are biking trails as well as scenic walks, scuba diving as well as swimming.

“In summertime there are many restaurants found on nearby islands,” adds Sylvia. “At dusk, it is a tradition that people channel their boats to one place where they listen to music, drink beer and wine and just have a fun evening before going out to dinner.”

How to convert the comfort and convenience of a luxury hotel into an authentic local experience—this was the challenge our expert Erica Berman took on, and succeeded at beautifully, in the creation of her company Haven in. Her 20+ years in the luxury apartment and villa rental business has lead her to expand from one studio apartment in Paris to dozens of exquisite properties in various European destinations. Erica tells us more about the evolution of Haven in below.

Erica Berman

It all started with a good idea (and, frankly, a good view).

“My parents are the kind of travelers that only stay in 4-star hotels; the kind who want to explore on their own during the day, but return to something luxurious, full service, and familiar at night. Soon after my move to Paris in 1992, they decided it was time for a visit. As Mom and Dad prepped for their stay, I had an idea. They needed to see the city I fell in love with through the eyes of a local. I would convince them to stay in a friend’s newly renovated penthouse apartment that came with a big bonus: a balcony and a killer view of the Eiffel Tower.

Victor Hugo Chic Haven In

“Not only did they agree, but after their apartment stay, they couldn’t stop raving. Though they’d visited Paris before, this was a fresh vision and a new kind of luxury: living like a local in as if they, too, were Parisians, if only for a while.

“That’s when the idea sparked. If my 4-star hotel, comfort-loving parents could enjoy, even prefer, this type of hotel-alternative experience, certainly other travelers would, too. I took a leap, bought a charming studio in Montmartre with a friend, renovated and decorated it, and spread the word that it was available for rent for vacation stays.

chm-16jh-12

“Being the early days, I marketed in magazines, faxed information, and sent printed photos by snail mail. It was old fashioned and slow. There was no website or even email. Things have greatly changed since the early 1990s and that adorable studio is no longer mine, but it was the incentive to start on a new and exciting path.

Today, Haven in has more than 50 boutique rental listings in Paris, Provence, Tuscany, and London. My team is here to help other creative travelers and luxe lovers to have that same authentic experience and their very own home-away-from-home just as my parents did, all those years ago.

Casole desla Tuscany Haven in
