Mexico is home to some of the loveliest towns of the Americas. Visitors can’t help be whisked away by  the charm of narrow cobbled streets, soaring church towers, colorful artisanal boutiques and lively café terraces. Our local experts let us in on their favorite towns to help you plan a perfect, magical Mexican holiday.

Izamal, Yucatán Peninsula

Nestled in the center of the Yucatán Peninsula is this mythical city and a holy place where Itzamná, the Maya god of wisdom, art, language and culture, was born. Our Yucatán expert Angelica Espinosa of Catherwood Travels tells us more about this special town:

“It is thought to have been founded around 600 BCE and was an important pilgrimage site at the time of the Spanish Conquest. The magical convent is one of the town’s wonders. It features one of the most exceptional central courtyards of any church in the world. Izamal is the only place in the Yucatán where there’s a pyramid no matter where you look. In fact, there are more than 140, all which are integrated into the contemporary town, where 30,000 descendants of the ancient Maya see this as no more than a part of their daily life.

“With nearly all its modern and colonial buildings painted an spectacular shade of egg-yolk yellow, and surrounded by the remains of pre-Hispanic constructions, Izamal remains an important ceremonial center and pilgrimage destination.”

Where to stay in Izamal

Catherwood Travels has the perfect historic hacienda in beautiful Izamal. A stay at intimate Casa Azul means you’re living on sacred ground—there’s an ancient Maya pyramid right in the back yard! And that’s just the beginning.

Izamal’s “Blue House” is an enchanting colonial home, just a block away from the cathedral, featuring one air-conditioned bedroom (with a queen-size bed), a full bath with tub and shower, a comfortable living room and a fully equipped kitchen. The house’s quaint courtyard and rear garden at the base of the pyramid and full of charm and intrigue are ideal for relaxation or dining al fresco.

Puebla

Situated two hours southeast of Mexico City, history lovers adore this delightful town, considered one of the five most important Spanish colonial cities in Mexico. Founded in 1531, its strategically location on the route between Mexico City and the country’s main Atlantic port, Veracruz, brought it much wealth, displayed in its beautiful 70+ churches, numerous bubbling fountains and fine array of extravagant mansions, characteristics which led it to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The city is also known for its delicious mole poblano and chiles en nogada as well as its gorgeous Talavera pottery.

Visitors to the area can include the nearby Great Pyramid of Cholula, also called Tlachihualtepetl. The massive structure is larger than the Pyramid of Giza and features phenomenal views of Popocatépetl, an impressive active volcano found only 50 kilometers away.

San Miguel de Allende Mexico

San Miguel de Allende

Founded in 1542, San Miguel de Allende is one of the most beautiful hilltop cities in Mexico. Located about 160 miles north of Mexico City, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has completely enchanted our local expert, Pamela H. Murdock, she wins us over to the town with her description below:

“It’s truly a gem and I love everything about it. San Miguel is absolutely charming with narrow cobblestone streets and marvelous colonial houses – both grand and fully staffed or small with only a housekeeper/cook. No matter what the size, almost all are hidden behind high walls that conceal courtyards, fountains, gardens and loggias with outdoor dining and sitting areas and fireplaces. Also very appealing is the climate. Most of the year the weather is lovely with warm sunny days and cool evenings. Perfect for sleeping and houses are even more magical at night when their fireplaces are lit.

“There are lots of good restaurants and great shops with wonderful furnishings and decorative objects (shipping is easily arranged so I can justify buying more). There are also quite a few fascinating historical sites within easy reach of town. Plus, every month of the year are holidays, festivals and parades which are celebrated con mucho gusto!

“A little advice: Because of the cobblestones, high curbs and uneven sidewalks wear sensible shoes (I’m not kidding) and if you’re watching fireworks in the Jardín, the main plaza, be ready to run since fireworks sometimes fly every which way. Or do as the locals do and use the metal lid of garbage can as an umbrella/shield. It can be exciting yet totally entertaining. Also, don’t bother trying to figure out the times church bells peal and in some cases, clang. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason.

“San Miguel is one of those special places people go back to year after year and I completely understand why!”

Many thanks to Pamela for her vivid illustration of this magical Mexican town!

In this edition of How We Started we journey to Mexico’s stunning Yucatan Peninsula where we learn how our experts at Catherwood Travels are helping save the region’s haciendas. The conversion of these historic homes into holiday rentals is keeping them from being on the brink of extinction. Discover more about this issue and Catherwood’s involvement in it below.

angelica-espinosa-catherwood

“I was invited to join Catherwood Travels in 2010 by happy coincidences, originated from my years working with the Yucatan Tourism Bureau and my time abroad studying in Spain. I was amazed to learn the history behind the company and the great amount of effort spent in creating this project. The challenge was big as the company was considered a pipe dream: we were going to spread the word of a Yucatan barely known.

“Six years later, I’m not only proud to represent a successful company that is socially committed to the region and Mexico but also fortunate to share my passion for the Maya civilization with discerning travelers.

hacienda-tamchen-2

“The initial haciendas on the Yucatan peninsula were established after the 16th century for agricultural and/or livestock production. In fact the term means “large estate or plantation with a dwelling.” A number of indigenous people settled around these buildings to work the fields, and it was the hacienda owners’ responsibility to provide shelter, food and education, in addition to introducing the people to the Catholic faith.

“In the mid-19th century, the production and sale of sisal fiber began to grow in importance. At that time, the Peninsula produced 90% of the rope and sacking used in the entire world, which brought great wealth to the owners of the sisal haciendas.

“The total number of haciendas in the Yucatan rose to close to 1,100 between 1850 and 1920, which was known as the “Green Gold” period. These imposing structures were, in many cases, designed by important local or foreign architects, many of whom were European.

“The region’s most important haciendas engaged in an economy that made use of its own currency for internal circulation. Workers were paid in this currency, which could only be spent in the local store that was also owned by their landlord.

tixnuc-1-1

“After living through an age of splendor, a socialist movement evolved in which the haciendas were engaged in complex land disputes, until they were taken over by the government for some years. On top of this, sisal fiber lost its market value due to the mass production of nylon. As a result, haciendas were gradually abandoned and the surrounding Mayan communities were left to fend for themselves after having depended on the property owners for decades.

“In 1990, it was estimated that only 400 haciendas remained, all of them in ruins. The rest had disappeared or had been reduced to barely recognizable structures that could not be salvaged.

“During one of their many trips to the Yucatán in 1990, the Hernandez family started to thinking about what they could do to save the culture and great constructions of these amazing communities, while inviting the world to learn about the natural resources and great knowledge of the Mayans through their surviving descendants and keepers of their cosmology.

beach-villas-4

“Through the restoration and development of several haciendas properties and the creation in 2002 of Haciendas del Mundo Maya Foundation, the company became a pioneer in the area, developing sustainable tourism projects to rescue the abandoned sisal-producing haciendas of the Yucatan Peninsula, along with a clear vision for promoting the economic and social development of the rural Mayan communities.

“Founded in 2008, Catherwood Travels represents the next phase of the family’s involvement in the Maya region: the creation of a team dedicated to combining the enjoyment of travelers with luxury treatment and cultural sensitivity to create unique experiential travel opportunities.”

Sport fishing Bahamas

Deep Sea Fishing – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

According to our expert Pamela H. Murdock, one of the best places for deep sea fishing in the Caribbean is the Bahamas, in particular on Harbour Island.

“The summer is the best time for fishing,” advises Pamela. “The gorgeous island is a popular destination year round, however, in summer the sun worshipers have been mostly replaced by fishermen and divers. This is when sport fishing is fantastic with tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo in abundance. This is also the start of the marlin tournaments which can be found throughout the island chain. Bone fishing is great year round and there are several excellent guides on the island.
“Serious and amateur fishermen love to go out with Jeff Fox of Ocean Fox. Not only is he a really nice guy but he has a sixth sense as to where the fish are. A full or half day spent with him guarantees great sport and fun.”

Spear Fishing

Spearfishing –  St. Peter, Barbados

For something a little different, our expert Nicole George at Altman Villa Rentals recommends heading to Barbados to try spearfishing, a fantastic sport that combines the thrill of catching fish and the extreme tranquillity of free diving.

“It is unique in that spearfishing is one of the oldest methods of catching fish,” explains Nicole. “It’s extremely ecological, providing virtually zero bycatch thus reducing the damage to fish populations and ensuring sustainable fishing practices.

“Enjoyed all over the world, spearfishing is an incredible way to escape from the modern day stresses of life (regardless of modern technology in equipment) and relax your mind to that of the ocean. Spearfishing can be a great experience with clear waters and tasty tropical fish which can be caught all over Barbados on the Caribbean (South & West) side and the Atlantic (East).

The following locations are typical dive spots known for fish, ease of access and usually allow diving throughout most conditions: Just off the beach by Port St Charles Marina in St Peter, and just off of Needhams Point in St Michael.”

Diving – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

Over in The Bahamas, one of the best places for diving in the Caribbean is Harbour Island. Located two miles off the north coast of Eleuthera, the island offers excellent diving opportunities throughout the whole year.

“The Island was made famous by Jacques Cousteau and National Geographic,” describes our local villa expert Pamela H. Murdock. “One can swim through ridges and coral canyons that are full of sea life. For those also who love underwater photography, this is a spectacular spot.

“On the whole diving is better during the rainy season, May to November, when the water is warmer and clearer, and we can better access Bat Islands as well due to lower winds. In the dry season, however, with the cold water, we get the rays in abundance, and very rich plankton filled water that creates a lot of action.

“At different times of the year, you’ll be able to catch certain sealife. Whales are usually visible from January to March, and then again from August through November. The season to see sea turtles starts in June and extend through November. Giant Manta Rays and all rays (large schools of hublot replica golden rays and devil rays, and tons of roving stingrays) appear from January to March. Whale Sharks occasionally come, but it’s hard to guess a season, however, they usually appear from December to April as well. Since they like the warmer water, sharks are generally visible from May to November.”

Pamela H. Murdock can not only arrange the best places to stay in Harbour Island but also excursions with the island’s best dive master. Contact her here.

In villa veritas turks and caicos diving

Snorkeling – Turks and Caicos

There are many fabulous places to snorkel in the Caribbean, however, according to Laura Blair of In Villa Veritas, the snorkeling in the Turks and Caicos is phenomenal.

“The archipelago has the third largest barrier reef in the world,” explains Laura. “The water is the most lovely turquoise (pictured above) and the reef is amazing and teeming with fish and coral life.”

Providenciales offers some excellent snorkeling right from the beach. You can enjoy the best snorkeling off the north coast where there are two reefs. The Bight Reef is easy to access, but the more difficult to find Smith’s Reef has much more to see. Therefore, it might be better to book a boat trip to truly experience the reef, something In Villa Veritas can arrange. You’ll be able to swim above rainbow coral, spot some sea turtles, stingrays and other tropical sea life.

Catherwood - Cenote diving

Cenote Diving – Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Scuba diving has become quite popular in Mexico, but adventurous and experienced divers might want to try cenote diving off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, as suggested by our experts at Catherwood Travels.

The omega replica peninsula sits on a huge limestone platform where freshwater flows like rivers through underground cave systems. Part of this land collapsed after the last ice age, creating sinkholes called cenotes. These offer one of the most unique diving experiences in the world.

However, it is mandatory to be certified in order to explore the hidden depths of these remarkable formations of stalagmites and stalactites. There are dive tours offered at every experience level and led by certified dive masters and supported by veteran ground crews.

Catherwood Travels can create custom cultural and active experiences in the Yucatan as well as fabulous accommodation at the area’s best haciendas and villas. Discover their fabulous offerings at this link.

Amidst the mountains snake powerful rivers, like the fabled Yellowstone River, the longest free-flowing river in North America. It originates in Yellowstone National Park and flows almost 700 miles to its confluence with the Missouri River.

The location is ideal for first time rafters as well as experienced thrill-seekers. The narrow canyon features class III and class IV rapids and racing over them is a pulse-raising experience.
