Once upon a time, French kings frolicked in the pretty Upper Loire. Infatuated with the peace and serenity of the pastoral landscape, European royalty turned it into the most beautiful playground there ever was. More recently, the Upper Loire has evolved from private parklands into a quiet hideaway for a small number of luxury barge cruises. Here, the Barge Ladies recount a recent trip cruising the wine region’s waterways on the 5-star, 8-passenger Renaissance. Pour yourself a cold, crisp glass of Sancerre, while Barge Lady Kerri McConnel shares her Upper Loire highlights, and guides you through this charming area’s fruitful farmland, with supreme cycling, via lavish chateaux.

The Upper Loire can be pinpointed directly west of Paris, about a two-hour drive from the French capital, on the eastern tip of the Loiret department. The region came into being during the time of European royalty; a recreational refuge for the French nobility, ‘la noblesse’. Originally comprised of private hunting lodges and rambling country houses, these estates gradually evolved into the grand palaces we now know as “chateaux”. Some of the most esteemed architects of the era devised these ostentatious mansions, demonstrating the overwhelming affluence France withheld as a powerful European kingdom at that period. The dwellings offered the aristocratic upper classes all the contemporary comforts of city life, yet they were set against a breath-taking backdrop, and immersed in diverse natural beauty, magnificent mountains, and verdant forests. And it was surely no coincidence that, within the confines of this lavish royal lifestyle, the nutrient-rich soil and plentiful sunshine along the River Loire offer an abundance of fresh produce and fine wines to tantalise the taste buds of these privileged social classes.

Briare-Aaquaduct-Upper-Loire-Barge-Lady-Cruises-UltraVilla

At this time, the River Loire was initially adopted as an aquatic highway, transporting the Upper Loire’s bountiful grains, produce, and products to the Parisian people. (Incidentally, the rich region became known as “Le Gatinais”, or “the Garden of France”.) But the river was rendered an unreliable route of transport, as the Loire’s water levels were consistently affected by uncontrollable flooding in winter and summer-long droughts. And so, in 1604, the construction of the Canal du Briare began, and was completed in 1642. Along a similar vein, the Canal du Loing came into being in 1723, due to the poor navigability of the neighbouring River Loing and the success of the Canal du Briare’s commercial activity. The canals of the Upper Loire were abandoned in the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution. But today, the waterways have been perfectly preserved, comprised of gentle bends and easy-going locks, ideal for the leisurely pace of luxury barge cruising.

The Upper Loire always has been, and continues to be, exceptionally focused on its foodie produce. As a result, the locally created cuisine provides an indulgent insight into the region’s history, heritage, and modernity. The region is also France’s largest producer of vin blanc and is best known for its Sancerre; the crisp white wine is made from Sauvignon Blanc, the area’s signature grape. These white wines are best enjoyed relatively young, as their fruit-forward finish is bolstered by a refreshing zest and youthful acidity. Encapsulating summer sunshine, and bursting with juicy berries, these approachable white wines accompany many meals and menus, but our favourite pairing is with seafood. A drop of Pinot Noir is also grown in the Upper Loire, from which both red and rosé wines are produced.

Cheese-and-Wine-Tasting-Upper-Loire-Barge-Lady-Cruises-UltraVilla

It goes without saying that only the best cheese should be served with such delicious wine! And it will come as no surprise that the Upper Loire has many exceptional varieties to offer. The most famous is goat’s cheese Crottin de Chavignol, and with good reason. This little cylindrical variety has been gracing tables since the 16th century, and, under France’s strict production criteria, continues to be crafted using entirely traditional cheesemaking methods. Known and adored for its subtle nutty flavours, this cheese is a rare breed, as unusually it can be bought and eaten at all three stages of its maturity. The youthful cheese, Chavignol jeune, is solid and compact with a white rind. During the ripening phase, Chavignol bleuté, the scent becomes stronger and the rind harder. Finally, with full maturity, ‘Chavignol affiné, the cheese becomes crumbly and the rind turns blue. Crottin de Chavignol is most typically baked and served with a fresh green salad to compliment the cheese’s richness. It can also be found adorning a cheese board as a cold component. And is perfectly paired with Sancerre wines!

At first glance, the Upper Loire’s rural setting, bucolic scenery, and serene atmosphere seems to suggest that the area’s appeal is all rest and relaxation. However, there is plenty to keep more active holidaymakers moving, especially the Loire a Velo, an 800-kilometre network of pristine cycle paths. The intertwining trails offer cyclists of all abilities a way of exploring some of France’s most picturesque scenery, and some routes are a chance to challenge your physical fitness too. From fair-weather riders pedalling the canal’s adorable towpath, to long distance die-hards pushing through France’s deepest forests, cyclists of all levels can experience the exhilaration of exploration on two wheels.

Chateau-Upper-Loire-Barge-Lady-Cruises-UltraVilla

Adding to the allure of the area are the sensational chateaux, first built hundreds of years ago by the upper echelons of French society. The castles can be found sprinkling the Upper Loire’s sprawling landscapes where they were once hedonistic hideouts! Political unrest and frequent change meant that the chateaux were neglected and eventually abandoned by their original owners, but public funds and private ventures have beautifully preserved, and even fully resorted many to their former glory in more recent years. The Upper Loire boasts a collection of iconic castles, including Fountainebleu, Vaux-le-Victomte, and La Bussiere, and incredible unknown chateaux too. Each palace is testament to the extravagant lifestyles of the royals so vehemently rebuffed during the social and political upheavals of the French Revolution.

It is without doubt that that the Upper Loire offers a total sensory experience for those interested in the secrets of European history, sophisticated wines, active exploration, and rest and relaxation. The sweeping French countryside, timeless lure of architecture, and lovely stretches of vineyards throughout the Upper Loire effortlessly encapsulate its many enchanting eras.

Pocket Guide to France

A-Z of Luxury Barge Cruising

A Day on a Barge Cruise

A Taste of France Aboard the Luciole

Certain things instantly come to mind when France is evoked: heavenly food and wine, picture perfect villages; majestic castles, intriguing historic sites and breathtaking scenery. Most visitors are hoping that their vacation in la Belle France will include most of these, though on what is often a rushed city-hopping trip, this goal can be hard to achieve. For an extraordinarily authentic French experience, escape to the countryside, slow down to a snail’s pace and hop aboard the Luciole hotel-barge, something our editor Lily recently had the chance to do. Here’s what has made her fall in love with the Luciole and experience of a luxury barge holiday.

Luciole Barge group on deck

More Than your Average Boat

Built in 1926 as a mule-drawn freight vessel and subsequently converted into a floating hotel in 1966, the Luciole is one of the oldest hotel-barges in France. The recently refurbished vessel is in the fine repertoire of Barge Lady Cruises, the world’s top experts on canal barge vacations. The 5 x 34 meter boat has eight luxurious double and twin en-suite cabins, a spacious lounge with comfortable seating and dining areas and lastly a large raised sundeck. It has been managed with pride by the Liley family for over 40 years.

John Liley undertook a detailed exploration of Europe waterways in the 1960s, during his time as editor of a British yachting magazine. His travels inspired several books include ‘France – the Quiet Way’, an exploration of the entire French canal and river system which brought him to discovering the gorgeous 200-year-old Nivernais canal. He knew he’d come across the perfect place to establish a hotel-barge business, which he did in 1976. His wife Penny is now at the helm and their sons have also taken up a passion for barging and are involved in the business.

Superbly Stunning Scenery

Only two hours from Paris, this hidden area of Burgundy has remained far removed from the region’s well trodden tourist destinations like Dijon and Beaune. This has allowed this very rural and extremely picturesque area to retain its genuine character and charm. The canal is little traveled by other cruising boats, adding to the sublimely serene atmosphere aboard. One of the pleasures of a barge cruise is being able to truly savour the scenery, something that you can’t really do while driving. As we gently cruised along we could peacefully admire the passing pastures dotted with buttercups and grazing cows, the gentle slopes of cascading vineyards or cluster of village houses in the distance, plus a few stretches of dramatic cliffs and other unique natural wonders. If you’re nice to Captain Francisco, he may even let you steer the boat, but you’ll have to keep more of your eyes on the canal than the pretty landscape!

Immensely Charming Villages

France is known for its lovely villages and the itinerary of the Luciole includes some unquestionable gems. The cruise begins in Auxerre, where the barge is moored in the center of town, in the shado its impressive medieval cathedral. Our first morning our friendly and knowledgeable local guide Andy who accompanied us throughout the week, led through its narrow laneways and charming city-center with it enchanting 15th-century clock tower. The barge also stops close to Noyers-sur-Serein, considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. Stopping in on market day, we had a peek at the colorful stalls of seasonal vegetables, homemade sausages and fresh cheeses before wandering the crooked streets in search of medieval towers, stone walls crawling in wisteria, boutiques displaying artisanal leather goods, pottery and creative gift items. On several nights we were moored in a tiny village found along the way which could be explored early in the morning after breakfast – a moment when we could witness it rising: a villager sleepily venturing out for his morning baguette, the postman calling, the sun twinkling on the canal beneath the lock-keeper’s cute cottage.

Stoic Churches and Striking Castles

Another highlight of France is certainly its attractive and important historic sites, usually in the form of castles and churches and the Luciole’s route included a number of these. This started from day one with Auxerre’s mystifying gothic Cathedral of St Étienne with its beautiful stained glass windows and sculpture work and built up to our much anticipated visit mid-trip to the awe-inspiring Vézelay Abbey. Crowning the hilltop of a splendid town, the 11th-century basilica was the starting point of two French Crusades and is still an important site of pilgrimage. Another day we toured the Château de Bazoche, the former residence of the Marquis de Vauban who was Louis XIV’s innovative fortress designer, thus in essence, helped France become the country (and the size) that it is today.

Divine Gastronomy

A trip to France wouldn’t be complete without enjoying many of the country’s vast culinary pleasures and these are taken very seriously aboard the Luciole. This begins right at breakfast which includes a variety of fresh bread, croissants and other viennoiseries, acquired straight from oven of the best local bakeries along the route.

Then all morning the barge’s talented Scottish chef Jade has been busy preparing a “light” lunch of creative salads, sophisticated sides such as stuffed summer squash or broccoli-chevre quiche and a traditional-themed pièce de résistance of garlicky snails, battered frogs’ legs, mussels or magrets de canard. We are meant to save room for the cheese or dessert course, though it was hard to refuse seconds. With any luck, an afternoon of biking along the canal would prepare us for the exquisite dinners. Here is where Jade’s skills and imagination really shine.

The four-course evening meals featured beautifully presented innovative dishes using seasonal ingredients and contemporary flare – marveling our eyes and our stomachs. The dishes were paired with mainly local wines from Chablis and the Yonne Valley (two of which we visited on excursions) and were followed by a cheese course (accumulating in over 20 varieties by the end of the week) and a to-die-for dessert. Hostess Kimberly and Naomi always made sure the meal ended well with coffee, or a local Marc de Bourgogne or other digestif.

La Joie de Vivre

Perhaps the most important element of the cruise was intangible. Whether it was the personable and professional staff who become our friends by the end or the barge’s owner Penny popping throughout the week for a warm hello, our interactions with a jovial local shoemaker or the laughter and smile of a café owner, the quintessentially French joie de vivre attitude was underlying our whole week. The French take their time, they enjoy the finer things in life from gastronomy to quality goods and these were the force which fuel the experience aboard the Luciole.

The Luciole can be book exclusively or on a single or double occupancy on scheduled small group trips. Learn more about booking your own unique holiday aboard the Luciole by contacting Barge Lady Cruises here.

August may be one of the most popular season to holiday in Kenya’s Masai Mara, however, it’s also a wonderful time to visit. Our experts at Cottar’s Bush Villa and Cottar’s 1920s Camp tell us how to beat the crowds:

“The Masai Mara national reserve is an extremely popular destination over the summer as the annual great migration occurs during this time,” explains Katherine Darnborough, marketing coordinator at Cottar’s. “As you can imaging it can get pretty crowded but we’re situated in our own Olderkesi Conservancy that borders the main reserve so you have 7000 acres all to yourself.

Upper Loire Valley, France

For those looking to enjoy France this August without the crowds of Provence and the Cote d’Azur, the Upper Loire beckons with miles of pristine countryside, beautiful villages, enchanting castles and divine gastronomy. Within the inland waterways of this unspoiled region, the 6-passenger Meanderer Barge serenely sails, inviting her guests to discover a peaceful world of provincial beauty and pastoral allure.

“Often referred to as The Garden of Paris, or the “Gatinais”, the canals along the River Loire were built in the 16th and 17th century to supply its abundant produce to and from France’s capital,” details Stephanie Sack of Barge Lady Cruises, through whom this cruise can be arranged. “After the introduction of train travel in the 19th century, these canals fell into disuse and, as a result, have remained largely intact and untouched.”

“While plying these placid inland waterways, Meanderer guests will visit the delightful town of Montargris, often called “Little Venice” due its latticework of 131 flower-adorned canals and bridges.  Ancient houses, some half-timbered, add authentic architectural flair; pralines, the crunchy confection made from almonds in cooked sugar, were first concocted in Montargis in the time of Louis XIII, and can still be purchased at the original candy shop.”

Stops in towns like these are only one of the highlights of the cruise. Discovering the region’s delectable cuisine – either on visits to local wineries or through the delicious meals back on the boat – is an important and much enjoyed part of the cruise.

Plentiful opportunities for walking and bicycling along the placid canal augment the experience, while the ever-present ambiance of the countryside’s history is a welcome companion. Owned and operated by George and Susan Kovalick, the lovely and sophisticated couple apply their passions for fitness (bicycling, hiking, boating, and tennis), cuisine, history, and the arts to accentuate the natural setting and create a unique, well-rounded experience.

This piquant bouquet of bucolic ambiance, rural relaxation, and gourmet delights sets the appealing tone for a crowd-free cruise in August on the Upper Loire on the Meanderer. Find out more by contacting Barge Lady Cruises at this link.

Dijon, France

The capitals of Europe are a roll call of cities celebrated for their extraordinary contributions to the cultural, historical, and patrimonial heritage of the world. However, there are a dazzling plethora of smaller cities, especially in France, that are worth exploring for their local flavor, offbeat charms, and cuisine scene. One of the favorites of our experts at Barge Lady Cruises is historic Dijon, located in the region of Burgundy, roughly halfway between Paris and Lyon. It’s a highlight of several Barge Lady cruises and we hear why from Stephanie Sack of Barge Lady Cruises:

“History buffs will thrill to the guided walking tour, which reveals Dijon’s well-preserved Medieval core, the gorgeously restored Cathedral of Saint-Beningus, and of course the adorable Owl of Notre Dame de Dijon, the city’s iconic symbol and unofficial talisman.

“Foodies and Francophiles will adore the time spent in “Les Halles”, the region’s busiest food market, where seasonal produce, artisan breads, and handmade cheeses are proudly displayed.  Shopping is also on offer, as the lively pedestrian avenues are lined with specialty shops and charming boutiques. After admiring the half-timbered houses surrounding the Place François Rude, one of  Dijon’s most beautiful squares, the people watching at one of the many bustling cafes is time well-spent.”

You can enjoy your special visit to this epicenter of the Burgundian lifestyle while cruising on the Prosperite, the Rendez-Vous, or the Savoir Vivre. Discover this unique city and many of delights of France with the Barge Ladies here.

Cheltenham, England

On arrival, every child is welcomed with a backpack full of guides and tools; they get their own opportunity to chat with our hospitality staff about what they would like to do. Activities include archery (beginning by making your own bow and arrow), spoor identification and casting as well as tracking on foot. Children’s bush walks are hugely educational and often end with a fantastic picnic – parents can come too.

La Fattoria – Tuscany, Italy

Our experts at Homebase Abroad have a wonderful six-bedroom Tuscan villa perfect for families looking to mix culture and outdoor activities on a summer holiday to Italy.

Situated near Lucca, the private 55-hectare aristocratic estate is surrounded by perennial beds, cypress trees, well-kept lawns, 1800 olive trees, dense woods and rolling fields. Athos Barge Cruise – Canal du Midi, France

Our experts at Barge Lady Cruises love welcoming two and three generation families to the canals of France. For a family cruise this summer, they recommend the Athos, a 10-passenger barge which cruises down the Canal du Midi, located in the southwest of the country.

“We know that families can truly relax and bond while floating on tranquil waterways miles away from their homes and usual responsibilities,” says Stephanie Sacks of Barge Lady Cruises. “And the Athos is such a perfect fit for families.”

Cruising the lively waterways of the Canal du Midi, the barge is supremely comfortable and cozy, boasting the largest deck in the region. Ambiance and décor is informal and the cabins are “country French” in feel, with lovely flower bouquets and beautiful tiled baths.

Cuisine is of course gourmet for the grown-ups with goodies and nibbles prepared perfectly by the crew’s private chef for even the smallest of passengers. Adults enjoy a myriad of regional wines and local spirits onboard as well, while “mocktails” and sodas are specially served to the littles.

Best of all, family fun on the Athos is offered every day and coordinated by the barge’s crew, which includes a dedicated tour guide. The itinerary includes kid-pleasing activities such as kayaking on a nearby river, horseback riding, visits to beaches and parks, picnicking, bicycling, tennis – just to name a few! Barge owners Julian and Dannielle Farrant live in the area, and are parents themselves of two children, so their expertise on family-friendly sightseeing in the region is second to none.

There’s more than one way to tour Europe’s waterways, however, very few match the pleasure, pace and personalization of a private barge cruise. These luxuriously converted freight boats allow you to sightsee your way along canals and rivers, stopping to visit charming villages, enjoy a delightful meal at a local auberge or sample delicious wines right at the vineyard where they are produced. Stephanie Sack of Barge Lady Cruises gives us an insider “crash course” via this colorful barge terminology and how it can apply on the cruises they offer. Put on your captain’s hat and hop aboard!

Offering one of the most unique ways to taste and tour your way through France and other destinations, barge cruising is the best European vacation you’ve never heard of. Plying the exquisite inland waterways, barges function as floating boutique hotels, usually carrying just two to twelve guests. We find out more about this unique holiday experience by spending the day cruising with UltraVilla experts Ellen Sack and Stephanie Sack of The Barge Lady Cruises, the world’s top experts on canal barge vacations.

day on a barge saroche in burgundy

Since 1985, the Barge Ladies, who now include both of Ellen’s daughters, Caroline Sack Klein and Stephanie Sack, have offered guests expert insight into the dynamic world of barge cruising. Barging is like any other kind of cruise: there are lots of choices as to level of luxury, location, and on board ambiance. But the true charm of barge cruising lies in its intimate view into the European countryside, through which the barges float at five miles per hour! “Guests are immersed into the culture and daily life through guided excursions to working vineyards, local markets, and family-owned chateaux,” says Ellen. Life on board also reflects a genteel lifestyle, as passengers are pampered by English-speaking crew, including their own private chef, who creates seasonally-inspired continental cuisine.

day on a barge breakfast on deck

So welcome to your barge cruise! Here is how a day on the French canals might unfold, hour by delicious hour:

8:00 a.m. Wake up to breakfast – and do not even TRY to resist the chocolate croissants!

Barge breakfasts are informal affairs, taken in the salon, dining room, or perhaps al fresco on deck. A selection of cereal, yoghurt, fruit, cheese, and juice await. But the real point of breakfast might be the village-baked croissants, just warm from the oven. Your choice: One or two chocolate croissants? Finish off with hot coffee or a perhaps selection of herbal teas. Now you are ready to begin another delightful day floating, bicycling, tasting, and sightseeing in the French countryside.

9:00 a.m. Begin to cruise, relax, and explore

Barges in France cruise on historic man-made canals, built in the 17th, 18th and 19th century to carry cargo. Now these vintage waterways have been renewed as routes for vacationers. Today your barge will cover approximately 10 miles, heading towards the next port. At such a relaxed cruising pace, you can WALK faster than the barge can cruise! So what to do this morning? Well, there’s relaxing on deck and watch the gorgeous scenery drift by. Or, take out a bicycle and explore the passing villages. So many ways to immerse yourself into the passing countryside – and then return to the comforts of your floating home away from home!

passenger_working_the_lock copy

10:00 a.m. The lockkeeper needs help – doesn’t he (or she)?

Canals are bisected by locks, which raise or lower the barge to the water level of the next section of the canal. Although many of these are now operated electronically, along certain sections of the canal, lockkeepers still manually open and shut the system. On certain routes, lockkeepers still live in petite houses right on the canal and will often welcome your barge with wine and fresh produce for sale. Ask the Captain: Can you jump on shore and help turn the cranks to raise or lower your barge? Many guests enjoy playing lockkeeper – an adventure they could have nowhere else!

11:00 a.m.  Hang out with the Captain – maybe he’ll let you steer the barge!

In the always-open wheelhouse, you’ll be welcome to join your Captain for a chat. He knows local lifestyle and personalities (aka gossip) and will introduce you to the intricacies of operating the barge.   Try steering – it’s fun but a LOT harder than it looks!

Noon. It’s time for lunch and introduction of wine

Already?! The barge has moored now and everyone gathers in the dining room or on the deck for lunch.  Many barges offer a lavish buffet, featuring a different daily selection of salads, main dishes, quiches, and cheeses, paired with a selection of light local wines. At each meal, the accompanying wines are introduced by the crew, and during your week on board you’ll be offered 22 different vintages.

1:30 p.m. Sightseeing – a special introduction to the landmarks, lifestyles, and even secrets along your cruise route

It’s a private chauffeured and guided tour showcasing those special experiences that can be found only on a barge cruise. Accompany the Chef to market – meet the vendors and perhaps pick out tonight’s cheese selection. Or delve into the history of a preserved family-owned chateau, with the owner as your guide. What about a private introduction to a local artist, going truffle hunting, or perhaps a VIP tasting at an olive oil cooperative? Meet local craftsman or shop in enchanting cobblestoned streets. Sip the local wines at historic cellars which have produced and stored varietals for generations. Other choices, depending on your region, may include chocolate samplings, champagne tastings, enchanting villages, ancient churches, and local museums.

4:30 p.m. Back on board – relax and rejuvenate

Does your barge have a hot tub? Or a petite swimming pool? Many do, especially the newly-built vessels. Late afternoon is a wonderful time to relax in the water and enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif. Or, take a nap…or curl up with a book in the salon…or stroll the towpath next to the canal and snap pictures of the adorable lockhouses.

7:30 p.m. Dinner is served!

Glistening glasses, starched linen napkins, and flower displays set the scene for a dinner party with friends…and you’re invited! Light and flavorful cuisine showcases local ingredients and variety in the four-course menus. Dinner’s plating and presentation are partnered with the nightly wine pairings, which are expertly introduced and generously poured by the crew. A cheese platter and a decadent dessert round out the day’s edible adventures. As with the wine, each cheese is specifically introduced. You’ll taste at least 18 different cheeses – and maybe more – during your cruise.

10:00 p.m. Under the stars…a last enchantment!

End your day with liqueurs served on deck as the stars come out over the canal.
