House On A Dune – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

As tiny as Harbour Island is, it’s huge for the amount of fun to be had surrounding New Year’s Eve and the perfect stylish base on the island is the sleek House on a Dune villa which is still available through Pamela H. Murdock from December 26th to January 2nd.

“Between beach parties, fireworks and the annual Junkanoo (a parade with costumes, music and dancing), this Bahamian island has become so popular that houses are booked months and months in advance,” explains Pamela. “By now trying to find an available house is near impossible unless there’s been a cancellation… and there has been this one.”

The five bedroom House on a Dune is an ultra contemporary and very cool house right on the island’s famous pale pink sand beach. This remarkable property is hidden from the road amidst 1.5 acres of tropical vegetation and sitting atop a 35’ dune.

The contemporary villa was designed by an award winning architect who sought to create a structure that was “simultaneously powerful, yet comfortable; primitive, yet innovative; casual, yet elegant; raw, yet refined.” There is seamless indoor and outdoor living from its living and dining areas which open onto verandas protected from the elements by the deep overhangs of the gabled roof and retractable glass walls. Steps from the house, guests can take a short path down to the stunning pink sand beach.

Inside you can also find a dining area with a table for up to 12, beyond which is the kitchen, which can be closed off by recycled cedar doors. The five bedrooms all have are ensuite baths, that of the master bedroom has a freestanding tub and shower.

Anguilla

Anguilla is one of the ultimate foodie destination of the Caribbean and our regional expert Tim Roney gives us his insider tips on the island’s best tables. Anguilla has an impressive array of dining options from fine French gastronomy to laid back local BBQ. The most famous restaurant on the island is undoubtedly Blanchards, one of the first high end restaurants in Anguilla. This oceanfront venue is situated on Meads Bay, also home to many of the island’s top luxury villas. On offer is a well curated selection of the Caribbean, American, Mediterranean and Asian specialties. Enjoy equally delicious dishes at its more casual sister-restaurant Blanchard’s Beach Shack.

For a special night out, book in at Jacala where you can enjoy refined French food and stellar views. Chef Alain, named one of the top chefs in the Caribbean in 2014, and his team delicately prepare the likes of lobster soup, steak tartare and sautéed filet mignon, among other mouth-watering meals.

For creative cuisine, work your way through the menu at Veya (above left). With the motto of “cuisine of the sun,” it’ll be hard to choose from their inventive dishes fusing Island flavors and Asian influences like the jerk-spiced tuna which explodes with flavor. The unique setting gives diners the impression of being perched in a tree house in a tropical rainforest. Live music on several nights a week adds to the atmosphere and some guests prefer their lounge bar, Mezze, serving succulent cocktails and small plates.

Finally, at least once during your stay on Anguilla, Tim urges you to try Scilly Cay (above right). This is a quintessentially Anguillan restaurant with a focus on seafood, amazing rum cocktails and fabulously fun times.

Saint Barthélemy

The little island of St. Barth has a wealth of world-class restaurants and there’s always something new. Our local expert Peg Walsh reveals her top choices to tantalize your palates in 2017:

This season Bo Káo opened in the delightful courtyard of Gustavia’s Carré d’Or. They introduced Nikkei cuisine  – a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian gastronomy. This culinary trend is sweeping Europe and diners are wowed. Pisco Sours headline a creative cocktail menu and they offer wines to complement their unique woks. Start with their Anticuchos  – this delicious appetizer is a concoction of marinated chicken tempura, chiso and corn. It’s divine.

St. Barth newest hotel, the 5-star Villa Marie has named its restaurant François Plantation in homage to its predecessor in this tropical garden setting. Guests can enjoy classical French cuisine, poultry from Mieral, house-made fois gras and heirloom Caribbean dishes. The wine list is impressive and includes offering from their signature Domaine De Marie label. Save room for dessert and order the lemon soufflé. There’s an intimate bar for a digestif and perhaps a cigar. Dining here is well worth the ride out to Colombier.

The perennial favorite Santa Fe has changed hands but happily is still garnering rave reviews, the casual atmosphere, friendly service, and delightful breezes are just the same. And the langoustes are still swimming in that giant tank! Moule frites (flown in from France) are still the Thursday lunch special and so delicious and popular that if you are interested enjoying them for dinner, you must place your order when you make your reservation.

Tap into Peg Walsh’s vast expertise of St. Barth to plan your perfect gastronomic holiday to the island at this link.

Barbados

Barbados might allure visitors with its beautiful and gorgeous luxury accommodation, however, its cuisine is just as tempting. Our local experts at Blue Sky Luxury have been keeping their eye on the Barbadian dining scene for more than 30 years and let us in on some of their favorite eateries.

For gourmet experiences, look no further than the west coast, where you’ll find the island’s widest selection of fine dining establishments. You certainly won’t be disappointed with The Cliff, consistently considered as the top fine dining restaurant on the whole island. You’ll be wowed by their contemporary dishes with an emphasis on seafood such as spicy tuna tartare, Cajun salmon or chargrilled mahi mahi. Otherwise, you may like the posh Cin Cin By The Sea, a great option for fresh salads, seafood escabeche and amazing cocktails in a sleek and stylish setting with a stunning backdrop of the turquoise sea.

If you’re looking to try some of the island’s traditional fare at lively outdoor grills, the Blue Sky Luxury team suggests trying Cuz’s fish shack for their to-die-for fish sandwiches or rub shoulders with the locals at the fish-fries of seaside towns like Oistins and Moontown. On Saturdays everyone heads to the Village Bar at Lemon Arbor for their cow heel soup and famous pudding, which go down well with a crisp beer or rum punch.

Or why not have your private chef whip up some of these delicacies in the comfort of your luxury villa? Many of Blue Sky Luxury’s exquisite villas have professionally equipped kitchens where their repertoire of excellent private chefs can work their culinary magic. Turks and Caicos

Of the 40 islands and cays of the Turks and Caicos, Providenciales is our go-to pick. According to our regional expert Tim Roney the most in-demand restaurant on the island is the stylish Coco Bistro. Its menu could include such dishes as Coco Bistro Style Ahi Tuna Tataki, Homemade Ravioli of Conch and Flame Grilled Sweet Peppers or Palmers Jerk Pork Tenderloin. If you can’t get in at Coco, then Coyaba is the best alternative. Set within a lush tropical garden, you might find Edamame Hummus, Hijike Wakime Kale or “Wellington Freebird” jerk chicken on the menu.

Great Italian food in the Caribbean is rare, however, Via Veneto. Succeeds at this beautifully. Their excellent dishes include Homemade Ricotta Cheese and Porcini Mushrooms Ravioli, Paccheri Pasta with Shrimp, Zucchini and Saffron and Sliced Beef Entrecote with Arugula. Lastly for a French bistro with a tropical twist, you’ll surely enjoy Le Bouchon du Village.

Harbour Island, Bahamas

If you’re seeking a great foodie destination away from the crowds, consider holidaying on gorgeous Harbour Island. Despite its size, this tiny island of the Bahamas has a fantastic collection of dining spots. Our local expert Pamela H. Murdock can’t get enough of the lobster quesadillas at Sip Sip, a laid back restaurant overlooking the immaculate white sandy beach. For fresh conch salad there’s no better place than Queen Conch, a rustic shack on Bay Street.

Enjoy some time out on the water as you take a short boat trip to Ocean Tally, a bar and grill found in a lighthouse on Eleuthera. For the best sunsets and Italian food, grab a table at Acquapazza, found close to the ruins of an allegedly haunted plantation house. For something more relaxed pick up some supplies at the various shops in town and enjoy a picnic lunch on a deserted island or arrange a fishing charter to catch your own dinner to be grilled at the end of the day back at your beach house.

Make the most of this island food paradise vacationing with Pamela H. Murdock here.

Jamaica

Jamaica is one of the most vibrant islands of the Caribbean and their cuisine is no exception to this. It’s most famous dish has to be its spicy jerk pork or jerk chicken and our Caribbean expert Sylvia Delvaille Jones of Villas and Apartments Abroad suggests going straight to where it was invented: Boston Bay, Port Antonio. If you can’t make it there, you’ll be able to enjoy this tasty dish at food shacks can be found on roadsides around the island.

For the most succulent lobsters, conch salad and others from the sea, stop in at Lobster Shack, located just down from Round Hill Hotel, roaming with royals, rovers and locals. Enjoy these dishes with an ice cold bottle of local beer (Red Stripe, of course) and to the soundtrack of reggae. Here you may spot Ralph Lauren or other celebrities like shoe designer Vanessa Noel and other notables who own homes at Round Hill.

Sylvia also recommends the Driftwood Bar, found one mile out to sea and where you can enjoy reggae music, rum and coconut water, as well as Dip And Fallback served up with boiled green bananas. Little shacks serve the best local foods – ox tail and broad beans, curry goat and rice and peas, Escovitch fish and pepper shrimps – your eyes water as you eat but you can’t stop. The choices are endless.

There is also a wonderful range of fine dining options. To cool down, pick up a cone of homemade ice cream at Devon House using fresh local mangoes, papaya, nesberries, starapples, pineapples and more. Check out Harmony Hall in Ocho Rios for a gospel or jazz brunch on Sundays, where fantastic local artists also exhibit their works.

Six Shillings – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

The stunning sands and waters of the Bahamas beckon those looking to tie the knot on the beach. One of the most memorable islands is the laidback, yet exclusive Harbour Island. Our local expert, Pamela H. Murdock, tells us more about organizing your special day on this unique island:

“As small as Harbour Island is, it’s big for destination weddings. And it’s something the island knows how to do perfectly. Whether one gets married in a church or on the beach, this idyllic isle is completely romantic and fun. No matter where the location of the actual ceremony is, brides should definitely plan at least one event on the pale pink sand beach framed by clear turquoise water. What could be a more beautiful, fairy-tale setting?

“As wedding guests are usually on island for at least three days, there’s lots to do to keep everyone busy – from charming shops and a variety of restaurants to in-house massage and personal training to boat charters for diving, snorkeling, fishing (deep sea and bone) and picnics on a deserted island. All of which we can organize for clients who rent villas through us.

“Another fun feature on the island are the golf carts which are how one gets around. One bride even planned a island-wide treasure hunt and guests had great fun zipping around clutching the list of things they must find. Golf carts are also ideal as one can’t get into too much trouble – especially after a couple of glasses of champagne!”

For a small wedding of under 20 people, Pamela recommends the Six Shillings Villa. The secluded estate has two lovely beach houses located on two acres of well-landscaped oceanfront property. The main house features a Great Room with cathedral ceilings, a comfortable living area, dining alcove and a fully equipped kitchen. There are three spacious, air-conditioned bedrooms that open onto a wrap around deck with both shaded and sunny sitting areas as well as a covered dining area overlooking the beach.

Twenty-five feet from the main house is a quaint cottage, tucked in the lush garden, which can accommodated an additional two guests. It’s immersed in palms and bougainvilleas and the other flowering trees scattered throughout the garden. The beach is a mere few steps away.

To marry in The Bahamas, couples must present valid passports and birth certificates. Divorce decrees are also required if applicable. Pamela will take care of the rest! Reach out to her here to start planning a beautiful Bahamian beach wedding.

Ithaca Island, Greece June 2009 (http://www.cedricreversade.com)

Ithaca, Greece

There are thousands of Greek islands, however, if you’re looking for the perfect peaceful escape, venture deep into the Ionian Sea to extraordinarily beautiful and tranquil Ithaca. Situated off the northeast coast of Kefalonia and to the west of continental Greece, the rugged island features steep cliffs, arid mountains and rolling olive groves.

“The island is kept pristine through truly awful ferry connections that improve in the summer, but for seven months of the year, Ithaca is cast adrift,” explains Ileana von Hirsch, director of Five Star Greece. “The result is minimal development, and those who build villas there are true aficionados with the taste and resources to do wonderful things.”

Five Star Greece have several stunning villas on this lovely island, some with even their own private beach, making them the ideal remote island getaway. Find out more about these exquisite properties by reaching out to Five Star Greece here.

The Bahamas

Man Island, Bahamas

Many of the islands of the Bahamas are idyllic, however, if you want to spend the day on your own deserted island, boat out to Man Island. This 35-acre land mass is located off the north tip of Harbour Island, which would make the perfect base for a stay in the area.

“It’s east side has beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and the west side faces a natural harbor,” describes Pamela H. Murdock, our local Bahamas expert. ”Stop at the Dunmore Deli, Bahamas Coffee Roasters or Arthur’s Bakery for sandwiches etc. then charter a boat through Jeff (he can also drop you off and collect you at an appointed hour) and take a picnic to the island. A word of caution: make sure you leave in the late afternoon before the sand flies come out – and they do with a vengeance! The island has been owned for many years by several people, though the sip sip (Bahamian slang for “gossip”) is that investors are looking at it due to its proximity to hugely popular Harbour Island.”

Pamela H. Murdock has some gorgeous villas and fabulous knowledge of the Bahamas to help assist you to plan the perfect trip, and boating excursions, to this splendid part of the Caribbean. Contact her here.

French Cay, Turks and Caicos

Found southeast of the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos are made up of 40 different islands, several of which are deserted or almost. If you’re staying on Providenciales, plan an excursion to French Cay, a small island and national bird sanctuary 29 kilometers (18 miles) south and reachable by boat in about an hour. With historical intrigue from its days as an 18th-century pirate outpost, French Cay is a fabulous place for snorkeling and diving over its reefs, as well as over nearby Molasses Reef where you can explore an ancient shipwreck. Permission must be granted to dock, but once on land, no other islands can be seen from this low lying island, creating you own deserted island experience. There’s a small beach on the north side of the cay where you can relax after your diving. Discover where to stay in the Turks and Caicos at this link.

Skellig islands, Ireland

Sitting in the Atlantic Ocean, 12 kilometers (eight miles) off the coast of County Kerry, in southwest Ireland are these two uninhabited islands. Featuring striking other-worldly scenery and jagged pinnacles, Skellig Michael can be visited by boat whereas Little Skellig contains the country’s largest gannet colony. A steep peak of Skellig Michael holds a sixth-century monastic outpost, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is accessible by climbing an ancient stairwell of more than five hundred steps. At the top, you will be rewarded with jaw-dropping views and the curious stone beehive-shaped huts, the former homes of the island’s monks in addition to oratories, stone crosses and the Church of St. Michael. Sometimes travel can come from a surprising twist of fate. That’s exactly what happened to Pamela Murdock, an UltraVilla expert for Harbour Island in the Bahamas and San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Read on to discover how an unexpected envelope in the mail allowed her to start traveling and eventually led her to create her bespoke villa rental company.

pamela-murdock-photo-cropped

“When I was 20, “my” bank in New York made the innocent mistake of sending me a credit card. It was a miserably hot summer, I was dying to escape and, as usual, was short of funds. And then the MasterCard arrived. I’d barely opened the envelope when I realized I was holding the solution. Not only could I charge the airfare, I could also rent a small house so that my Labrador could come too. Because Lulu and I loved the beach, I started renting on Caribbean islands that allowed dogs to visit as well. When she became too old to travel, I branched out to other locations including the Bahamas and Mexico.

“After years of various jobs, 18 of them as a publicist in New York City, I decided to turn something I loved doing for myself into a business: finding vacation house rentals. I was sure if I liked the property friends would too and happily they always did. Those friends referred their friends and my business continued to grow. My goal has never been to have as many listings as possible. I prefer to keep my company small and customized. It also doesn’t matter to me whether someone would like a simple beach shack or a grand villa with staff, the effort put into finding the right place remains the same. And once on holiday, the only thing I want my clients to have to think about is what fun thing to do next.

“Now 16 years later, I still look at each prospective house as though I was taking it for myself. I still want to know what surrounds the property, what the views really are, whether the bathroom has a tub or shower and what size beds are in each room (reading “double bedroom” on a website doesn’t work for me.)

“In destinations like Harbour Island, Bahamas (pictured above), I’ve developed an extensive list of contacts and am happy to be able to offer clients the following services: arranging golf cart rental, advance grocery shopping, extra maid service, a cook (managing all details), in-house massage, personal training, restaurant reservations, special events and boat charters for diving, snorkeling, picnics and fishing (deep sea and bone) as well as organizing a taxi from/to the airport and round trip water taxi service. Very detailed information about any location is also provided.

“By the way, over 40 years later, I’m still renting vacation houses for myself and yes, still using that MasterCard to pay for them (albeit making much larger monthly payments for which the bank is happy)!” – Pamela H. Murdock

Whether you’re after the thrill of the chase or seeking a peaceful day surrounded by nature, fishing is a sport which can be enjoyed by many. Take to the open seas battling to reel in giant marlin, try your hand at spearfishing or leisurely cast your line fly fishing. You won’t be a fish out of water by taking your next fishing holiday at one of these fabulous destinations.

Sport fishing Bahamas

Deep Sea Fishing – Harbour Island, The Bahamas

According to our expert Pamela H. Murdock, one of the best places for deep sea fishing in the Caribbean is the Bahamas, in particular on Harbour Island.

“The summer is the best time for fishing,” advises Pamela. “The gorgeous island is a popular destination year round, however, in summer the sun worshipers have been mostly replaced by fishermen and divers. This is when sport fishing is fantastic with tuna, mahi-mahi and wahoo in abundance. This is also the start of the marlin tournaments which can be found throughout the island chain. Bone fishing is great year round and there are several excellent guides on the island.
“Serious and amateur fishermen love to go out with Jeff Fox of Ocean Fox. Not only is he a really nice guy but he has a sixth sense as to where the fish are. A full or half day spent with him guarantees great sport and fun.”

House on a Dune Breezeway Evening

Where to stay on Harbour Island

Dock your boat on Harbour Island at the spectacular five bedroom House on a Dune, one of the most extraordinary properties on the whole island. Located on 1.5 very private acres, this remarkable oceanfront property is hidden from the road and reached via a 500-foot sand driveway which meanders through tropical vegetation culminating in a simple pavilion that sits atop a 35-foot-high dune. Designed and owned by an internationally renowned architect whose award-winning firm creates contemporary and cool residential and commercial projects, House on a Dune’s minimalistic design allows it to blend seamlessly into the environment.

Spear Fishing

Spearfishing –  St. Peter, Barbados

For something a little different, our expert Nicole George at Altman Villa Rentals recommends heading to Barbados to try spearfishing, a fantastic sport that combines the thrill of catching fish and the extreme tranquillity of free diving.

“It is unique in that spearfishing is one of the oldest methods of catching fish,” explains Nicole. “It’s extremely ecological, providing virtually zero bycatch thus reducing the damage to fish populations and ensuring sustainable fishing practices.

“Enjoyed all over the world, spearfishing is an incredible way to escape from the modern day stresses of life (regardless of modern technology in equipment) and relax your mind to that of the ocean. Spearfishing can be a great experience with clear waters and tasty tropical fish which can be caught all over Barbados on the Caribbean (South & West) side and the Atlantic (East).

The following locations are typical dive spots known for fish, ease of access and usually allow diving throughout most conditions: Just off the beach by Port St Charles Marina in St Peter, and just off of Needhams Point in St Michael.”

Along its 200km coastline are beautiful beaches whose warm waters are full of a wide variety of fish such as marlin, tuna, mackerel, roosterfish, sailfish and mahi-mahi.

“The fishing season really kicks off in May and is strongest through November,” adds Jane. “However, marlin and roosterfish can be found throughout the year, especially mid-November to March.”

Fly Fishing – Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Many might associate the turquoise waters off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula with snorkeling or diving. However, from a fly fisherman’s perspective, the Yucatan could not be more perfect as it is literally surrounded by some of the most sought after gamefish in the world, says Angelica Espinosa of Catherwood Travels.

Angelica sends fishermen to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere in Quintana Roo and to the Isla Arena in Campeche, both of which offer some of the most productive fly fishing in the world. A UNESCO natural heritage site, the saltwater flats and shallow bays of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, situated on the south side of the peninsula near Tulum, are excellent for experienced anglers as well as families. The best fly fishing here is from November to June which corresponds nicely with winter holidays.
